The Arab Slave Trade 18:53 - Sep 12 with 2620 viewsJACKMANANDBOY

My niece, bright as a button, is doing some work for GCSE History on the Slave Trade. I've just had a quick call with her after I spoke to her last week about putting data into context. I gave the simple framework Who, Why, When, What, Where and How to establish a baseline to work with.

She has come up with a load of stuff that I had not come across, stuff that anyone can find. Examples include.

The size of the Africa to Arab lands slave trade was similar to that of the Atlantic slave trade.
Britain spent 50 years after slavery was abolished, deploying around 16 percent of the Royal Navy to prevent the transportation of slaves, losing tens of thousands of sailors in the process.
It is estimated that there are today more slaves in the World than at any time in history.

There's loads more.

I've agreed to validate and list all her sources and reference material!

Te number of people brought into the UK illegally to literally be tithed slaves is scary, the government can't put a number on it.

We have so many criminal enterproses dressed up as Turkish barbers, restaurants and car washes before we go near the illegall brothels an the sex slaves forced to work in them.

O don't know how maky slaves were on these islands back in the day but there are probably thousands here today. Maybe tens of thousands.

They are aware, it just doesn't fit into their political agenda.

With regards to the comment about there being more slaves now, out of interest how do the numbers look as a percentage against the estimated world population back in the day and now?

The Barbary Muslims were raiding southern and Western Europe for slaves for over a thousand years. They even went as far as Iceland. They took millions out of their beds, off ships The poor souls were then often sold to the Ottomans and put to hard labour. The Vikings took thralls, the Romans took slaves from all over the empire. The Ashanti kingdom were one of the worst slave traders in history.

The narrative the left try to push is slavery is entirely evil colonialist whites being beastly to poor downtrodden peaceful vulnerable black people whereas the reality it’s more like evil humans doing evil things to other humans to fuel their own greed.

They also tend to overlook the fact that many, if not most African kingdoms and tribes of the time were enthusiastic slavers and sold prisoners to the whites for transportation. Crews of slave ships didn't have to go inland and capture their own.

The number of slaves that went to Brazil was around 2 to 3 times the amount that went anywhere else but the Portuguese don’t seem to face anywhere near the levels of criticism the British do. Many from the Ashanti empire which of course the British invaded and put a stop to it.

My youngest is studying Slavery this week - I'll have a look at her textbook later - be interested to see how it's presented. You're right of course Britain gets pelters over slavery and I think it's driven partly by the self-loathing and self-flagellation of our own fluffy liberals and the fact we had the biggest Empire of the European powers.

Way back when I did my history GCSE the Atlantic Triangular slave trade was taught and no other examples. Just like the rise and crimes of Nazi Germany was a subject but not the multiple genocides of the Soviet Union.

Can't imagine that the situation has improved since.

An article that refers to the Arab Slave Trade by an organisation largely funded by the German Government.

No colonists were good but we were the least bad
The Belgians and French shocking as were the Portuguese
At least we stopped tribal slaughter
When we left , there you go
Best example Zimbabwe

I often wonder if the cultural heritage of some of the politicians and others campaigning for slavery reparations from the UK would stand up to in-depth inspection. For example, Ms Bell Ribero-Addy is of Ghanian heritage. The Ashanti were the dominant tribe in that area.

I've posted before about Mansa Musa.

Then there's Haiti, the French and Spanish had slaves there but thy revolted during the French revolution and there's an argument the slaves ruined their own economy and then the descendnats caused even more damage that caused massive deforestation and really damaged the economy, are the slave owners they kicked out respobsible for what happened after France and Spain were gone?

It's massively complicated and I think putting a value on it all is impossible. Saying that, wouldn't the British deserve credit for ending the transatlantic trade? Maybe not if you're Patrick Robinson?
