World athletics - clean or just me? 12:06 - Sep 22 with 2447 viewssaint901

Like many here who are into sport, I watched a fair bit of the recent World Championships in Japan.

There was a lot of discussion around the track records still held by Eastern European or Russian "athletes" since the 1980's especially in women's middle distance events. The implication - although everybody seemed afraid to say it out loud - was that drugs were involved.

That debate was a bit hypocritical. No mention was made of "Flo-Jo" - an American sprinter who came from nowhere to world records. Nor the present crop of US sprinters who seem to come from two coaching groups run by athletes who tested positive.

For me therefore the gloss was somewhat taken off some performances by the suspicion that drugs were involved.

I then looked at football players in professional leagues and their record in taking or being found to have taken, PED (performance enhancing drugs).

The figures are shocking.

In a season of 45 weeks there are around 120,000 chances for a drug test to happen in the four top professional leagues in England. Less than 2,000 are carried out. And when they are, the players and coaches get advance warning.

Aside from Ferdinand getting a ban for missing a test and others with short bans for "recreational drugs", very few positive tests reported.

So if I'm cynical about athletics should I also be about pro football?

You could also therefore ask why GB & NI did so cr@p in the Championships, only 5 medals and no golds!

Valid point.

I offer in no particular order.

1. A focus in Diamond League and European events which with the indoor season beginning in March means a very long season

2. Some of our better athletes having had disruptive seasons via injury

3. No talent or development program of any note in the field events especially

4. Being just not good enough - or not taking enough of the right drugs

5. Perhaps not enough opportunities for those with talent

I noticed the 800m World record is still from the 80s by Kratotzvilova who I remember at the time looked about as feminine as WG Grace.
