One of Blair’s and New Labours’ flagship schemes which didn’t get through as it was deeply unpopular at the time. Now they are re marketing it as a way to clamp down on illegal immigrants being able to work as employers will need to check their right to work through this central database.
Of course they are ignoring the basic facts:
A) Employers already have to check right to works on employment anyway and have had to do so for a number of years already.
B) illegal immigrants generally disappear into the black market and gig economy which this will not affect in the slightest.
Is this a good idea? Is it further evidence to the suggestion that Blair is still pulling the strings?

They don’t need ID cards to do that because it’s far too slow and ponderous. For some time South Wales Police have been at the forefront facial recognition development in the U.K. They have their own cameras and they can also route 3rd party cctv systems through their facial recognition systems to identify offenders and suspects. They can ID and detain suspects before they get anywhere near a turnstile. |
