But, you know, they don’t celebrate Christmas in school any more, and they’re teaching children to be trans. They can’t tell what a man anymore when is when everyone knows a man has a penis. Oh, hang on…

Just what is happening in our schools on 19:26 - Oct 9 by Gwyn737 | The response from the council is in the link. The bit of the curriculum for the use of the word penis is between the ages of 5 and 7, use the correct anatomical terms for body parts. I don’t have an issue with that. The alternative is not to answer children’s questions or thing of another word to use. Halal meat needs clarifying. There is absolutely no way a comparative religion is prioritised over Christianity. As an aside, I work in a church school and only 14% of families marked Christian on the admissions form. If that’s true about the teachers then that’s an issue. It’s a difficult one as by law there is no power for a parent to withdraw from RE. If parents doesn’t agree with that then it can put them at odds with school. |
That's interesting, it's a long time ago, but we had one or two kids in our year that were excused RE because their parents objected. I suppose if we were truly inclusive we'd accommodate those you were non believers

I'll bare that in mind when I go to my grandchildrens Christmas concerts and carol singing, in Welsh with no Muslim references.

I’d rather religion was pulled out of schools full stop. You can withdraw from collective worship/assemblies but not the curriculum. Just my personal experience but the only people who consistently withdraw from collective worship /assembles are Jehovah’s witnesses.

Exactly this. Religion should play no part in education. No schools based on it, whether Jewish, Catholic or Moslem. No school assemblies, no RE education. Get it out of there.

How can you WR, some say they don’t happen any more 😉. Seriously though, of course you’re right. We had our Harvest festival yesterday. At Christmas the littlest ones will do a Christmas singalong with their parents, infants will do the nativity complete with tea towels on heads and indignant innkeepers and the juniors will all be in the church doing seven and seven carols complete with a 60 strong ukulele band playing Silent Night. Similar to all the other schools in the area yet I’m consistently told this doesn’t happen.

I went to a catholic school primary and comp pretty much excluded every other religion like it didn’t exist . On reflection it was a appalling way to educate children on religion

That's why a professional comprehensive response is required, personally I would invite parents to observe lessons, as a parent governor I used to do it and we had the occasional parent observe with the teacher's permission. We briefed the parent on the lesson and it's place in the curriculum and take any questions afterwards. Parents got to experience how difficult it is to run a really effective lesson. The name calling in the incomplete Council response risks feeding the flames of discontent.

Trouble is, (in Anglican schools anyway,) the church owns the lease on the footprint where the school is built. This gives them more power to control things that it should, In most cases it means that governing bodies have to have at least a quarter of members appointed from the church.

That’s still good practice but so many things are decisive these days it’s impossible to cover all basis. I suppose that’s where a national curriculum is useful as all schools teach the same things and the info is publicly available. You can never please everyone and this is where bad actors such as Voice of Wales profit from clickbait.

We decided to ensure there was a good relationship with the community following the dismissal of a Head. The Head was crap but the LA did everything to prevent the dismissal even though he was in the habit of manhandling kids. It wasn't much work for teachers the Governors did the heavy lifting.

Governors are amazing. I can’t think of another community volunteer role with so much responsibility and accountability. Maybe some of those concerned parents could put themselves forward if they really want to make a difference. However… Put yourself back to your governor days and imagine standards in RE is under your brief. You know the school has to teach the curriculum and that that curriculum has a unit on Islam and you go to watch a lesson. Is that lesson (on average) better if led by the teacher who would probably be a non specialist using a textbook or a slideshow, or better if a member of the local mosque comes in, bringing in real artefacts, providing real life experiences and able to answer questions from a position of knowledge. We were always cautious putting guests in with the pupils, we had some interesting experiences. As ever, it depends on the person.

You don't need to be a vegan to believe that slitting an animals throat until it bleeds out isn't the most humane way of killing an animal.

There’s always a risk but there’s certainly benefits imo. In this case, there’s no confirmation anything untoward has gone on. If it’s has it should be addressed but that not reason to stop visitors enhancing lessons.

Much of the RE curriculum is based around empathy and understanding of other viewpoints, including atheism and humanism. It teaches youngsters to be able to articulate and explain why they may agree or not agree with a particular viewpoint in the right way, without the need for antipathy, aggression or violence. Whether we like it or nor, different viewpoints play a part in the communities in which we live and students are given the facts about these viewpoints, without which they may end up watching some of the more divisive stuff online. It should be about education not indoctrination. I agree though, there should be no schools based on faith which just breeds isolation and division. Most good schools will have kids from all sorts of different backgrounds mixing, being friends, playing together and sharing ideas. [Post edited 10 Oct 13:42]
