Following on from yesterdays refereeing performance and a few comments on other recent threads I did some very quick and limited research on whether, as has been suggested, VAR is coming to the Championship next season.
From what I could see this is not happening. Apparently some clubs don’t have the infrastructure and the cost is also a factor for not introducing it.

What is being considered in FVS (Football Video Support - not the catchiest acronym). This is similar to a review system in cricket and something I’ve thought for years would be significantly better than VAR which is a truly abysmal system and shows how poorly football is run at the top. They trialed this at the recent U20 World Cup and it worked well.

Basically, the manager gets two chances to review a decision. The referee comes to a pitch side monitor and makes the decision on his own. If the manager is correct the review is kept. This should stop the constant interference of VAR and speed up the game.

Handball not given to Liverpool yesterday (correctly IMO) was remarkably similar to the one they were given in injury time at 0-0 at Burnley. The rule could be interpreted to justify giving both or neither.

One rule change I would like to see is more indirect free kicks for minor infringements inside the area. A penalty feels far too harsh for clearly not deliberate handballs.

Exactly the conversation I had the other night. A penalty is far too harsh a punishment when the ball hits a player’s hand when he knows nothing about it. A player can’t be held responsible for not anticipating the flight of the ball when he’s looking the other way. An indirect free kick is the answer.

Strong and stable my arse.

Pushing, shoving or full on assaults in this country hardly ever get called. American sports more gladiatorial then soccers hunting and gathering. Too many ACL injuries I’ve seen, very sad. 12-18 months out.

There are some well dodgy refs out there admittedly. They will never get any breaks when the people calling them out have never done it. When I left the Uk Middx was short of 1,000 refs every weekend. Know one wants the shyte that comes with the gig especially young people.

The training by the FA and FIFA is second to none. Attended a few closed door presentations and believe me the training is meticulous. Thick skinned, an a hole or a Buddha like temperament required at the top level to survive.

I spent a lot of time with Graham Poll on the England cricket Test match tour to New Zealand last Winter (and yes, he's QPR). Listening to him is interesting. Lovely fella and full of stories. He's also got the 'thick skin' to which you refer.

Er no…it shouldn’t even be a free kick. They should more or less revert to what was the original, simple interpretation of handball ie intentional. The only tweek should be where players star jump to block a cross which would be regarded as ‘reckless’ handball.
