Northern Line down today due to signal failure at Stockwell. Why is there no back-up ?

And if there is no back-up are there really no means by which staff can't use phones to tell drivers when the platform is clear and they can proceed ?

I ask on here because the staff at the stations don't have the answers and the only public service message on the train was the 'See it, say it, sorted' sh*t, which I found quite ironic.

AI can't come quick enough to some workplaces

Feels like bits of the tube are hanging on by a thread.

Piccadilly Line trains are ancient and can't run in anything other than dry, calm, overcast conditions of about 14 degrees with no leaf fall. I have my doubts about these new submarines they're launching as well, but let's see.

Northern Line not far behind.

Central Line have a weird brush connection mechanism that somebody in 1994 thought was a great idea but now doesn't work and also cannot be easily replaced because none of the other trains have the same thing.

Bakerloo Line is basically an extension of the London Transport Museum.

It's like everything else in the country. Creaking, bursting at the seams, because of underinvestment.

We went to Camden today to that Babylon Park arcade with my daughter and that Northern Line was a bloody disaster, ended up having to get buses across London, seemed to be down all day

I can try and answer this, as I work on the Northern line.

The Northern has an automatic signalling system. Any issues with this can cause the current problem they are having. I was at work when it started on Sunday.

Sunday was relatively easy as you don't have so many trains. But with so many trains running at peak (97) and at 3 minute intervals here lies the problem. It takes on average 5 - 6 minutes for the signaller to talk each train through the affected section safely - You can do the maths

So as you can see AI wouldn't solve the problem.

In fairness, the advice that has been given for all 3 days so far and looking at it today, the advice is AVOID the Northern as it is quicker to take alternative routes, and to be fair with the options out there that's good honest advice.

Hopefully that helps

the new signals are basically computer operated, sending comms thru cables ( either trackside or near rails) it is called TBTC , the old bulb type signals are pretty much gone on most lines , so when they call a signal failure on northern, central , jubilee etc it is more likely a cable fault /comms but easier to call it a signal failure .
if there is a break in cables , trains may not be able to move so literally stall ( i am not a train op but station supervisor ) if this goes on too long, service suspended.

I decided that was too much detail to explain, but that red wire has a lot to answer for currently!!

I thought Pete Hegseth had been sending confidential messages to the US military. Again.

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one's lifetime." I work on the LU, I’m not signals dept but have done maintenance for 20 years, as has been mentioned, “signal failure” is used as a blanket term now, another issue is to fix something during the day the traction current needs to be discharged and then the repair can often take time, this then needs to be checked and then current can be switched back on, only then can the trains can continue with a backlog, something simple can have repercussions for hours. Most of the time we patch it up until engineering hours start at 01.00.

The tube is falling apart, some of things i see would shock the average punter, simply Mayor Khan has not spent enough, less bike lanes, ULEZ cameras and more maintenance/upgrades for the tube.
