Julian Stephan has to be given credit for immediately changing tactics (and personnel) following the thrashing at Coventry. Now he has to show both wisdom and consistency by starting the best XI on a club that's built for pace. His positive comments about "Michy" after Milwall is concerning as all who saw that game universally panned his performance.

Frey and Field are surplus (unless we try using Sam, a great shot blocker, as a back-up CB). Cook should only be used as a spot starter to spell Morrison. Mbengue should play EVERY game. We should consider slotting Dunne back at CB at times while recruiting another RB in January. Saito/Burrell/Kone/Vale up front as often as possible, spelled by Poku and Smyth. Finally, would platoon Varane with Hayden; the former is still a bit shaky to be an every game starter.

Like so many on this site I believe we have our best shot at the playoffs in years. Let's go for it.

long season, all clubs deal with dips in form and the dreaded injuries. the results have been good since that loss at coventry, who are very good ( i hate to put that) this season.
for me the big factor is, IF we are TOP 6 or close new year, will the squad be strengthened IF needed to push for play off spot?
this was not done under warburton .
the gaffer and his team have got us playing and winning , after millwall , i am thinking 4 pts from next 2 away would be good .

Neither of those players are surplus. Field will play a significant role this year, as he always does, and we need Frey because it only takes an injury to Kone and we're stuck with a lightweight forward line again. Mbengue can't play every game because he's guaranteed to be suspended for large parts of the season.

Also, it's far too early to say if we have a shot at the playoffs. We, like much of the league, are wildly inconsistent from one week to the next. Even from one half to another. In amongst a couple of impressive victories there have been some very poor performances and disappointing results.

I'm not sure it would go down well if JS went to the media and slated Frey just like everyone did online. Positive comments may be needed, that's man management

After 10 games he should know his best 11 but too easily as fans we just ignore any potential factors. Like vs Millwall, how fit and ready are the returning international players, perhaps he would have liked to play Burrell or Kolli but they were not 100%. We don't really know

Short of injuries, where do you see Field getting playing time? I think he's solid closer to the back line, less so moving forward.

Fair comment.

We'll know a lot more tonight when we see JS' starting XI.

A close run second to liquid cheese.

Well, for a start, we simply don't know if we'll continue playing with 2 in the centre of the park. Its worked in some games but not others. And then, if we do continue like that, we don't know if the current 2 will continue together - again, they've been good in some games and not in others (individually and collectively). As for Field himself, every manager we've had in his time here has come to rely on him and he's consistently been in our top 3 performers every year. I wouldn't write him off if I were you.

I consider myself reasonably conversant in American, but I'm going to need an education on the use of spell and platoon as verbs there.

Welcome Tampa.
The more games Mbengue plays, the more he will be unavailable for.
No mention of Chair in your planning.

Technology advances, unfortunately humans do not.

I agree that Frey did not play well, but he set up a great early chance for Smyth and was involved in the build up to the latter's second chance. Had those gone in we don't know how his game would have been.

Chair will come back into the team and I believe we will see him closer to where he was when alongside better players such as Eze, BOS, Wells, Willock and Austin (loan spell).
