Strange, in that the CPS had previously decided there was insufficient evidence to proceed but have now 'reviewed the case' and brought charges.

There seems to be a growing and disturbing trend of 'celebrity chasing' involved as was extensively reported in a newspaper last weekend. If victims are legally allowed to protect their identities, then the same anonymity should apply to suspects, until guilt is established and convictions secured.

Whether Le Vell is guilty has yet to be determined (likewise Stuart Hall and others) but whatever happens in the future they are likely to be remembered for these events rather than anything else.

With regards to anonymity, that'd be the most logical way of dealing with it and I'm really not sure how they can justify naming the accused and not the victim. I remember having a 'debate' with a (retarded) girl in a Criminal Law Seminar about this very issue and she tried arguing that the accused should be named because they potentially pose a threat to society!

If someone has a case to answer then they should be dealt with accordingly; it's impossible to chase someone who has nothing to hide after all. I guess after the Saville incident(s) the Police have been told to follow absolutely everything up (which they should anyway) but you have to surmise that there's a fair bit of evidence against him in order for him to be charged of an offence of this nature. It is rather suspicious though that they deemed there to be insufficient evidence last month and now all of a sudden there's a case being brought.

The 'victims' in most cases of this nature are in any case juveniles who are quite rightly protected by anonymity anyway. That's how it should be, but there is a danger with such high profile individuals that there is a 'trial by media' before they ever step into a court room. They must be allowed, and are entitled to, a fair trial, but when they are splashed all over every newspaper and news bulletin that must surely prejudice their case.

The Savile case is a real 'can of worms' because he is unable to defend himself and his estate is now being plundered by barristers, alleged victims and anyone who thinks they are entitled to a cut.

As one newspaper asked:'

'If the Savile case is used as an example of pursuing a dead suspect, can we now expect a flood of historic claims from descendants against Richard III for the offences of child abuse involving the deaths of the 'Princes in the Tower' ?

It wouldn't surprise me.

Juveniles and the majority of victims are, as they should be, protected by anonymity and there's not really an issue with that. You're right in that the verdicts of high profile cases always run the risk of being put in danger due to the media coverage that they receive and despite the fact that the jury are told to ignore such coverage, it's almost always impossible to do so.

There was an interesting debate between two individuals on a news channel (think it might have been Sky News) surrounding 'Savilgate', with one person arguing that now the floodgates had been opened, the alleged victims smelt blood and wanted to get a share of the monies available. Naturally, this was seen as an inhumane and rather cynical view by the other and they argued that people were encouraged to come forward because they felt empowered to do so (and cited the reasons for not coming forward earlier as the 'no-one would have believed me' nonsense).

The case against Savile could definitely be seen as a money grabbing exercise at the moment and the fact that he is unable to defend himself has probably led to more stringent investigating by the Police in order to try and prevent this situation from happening again (as far as possible anyway). People will do anything for a bit of fame and money though and so nothing surprises me anymore!

What exactly do you mean by "unable to defend himself"? Because he's dead, or because there is no defence for the crimes he committed against vulnerable (mostly young, under age) children but also adults.

The real reason as to why minor celebrities are being "outed" (guilty or not) is to distract people from looking deeper into the corridors of power where the most corrupt and evil operate.

YOU do not have the right to give someone else permission to tell me what I can and can't do.

The Pope is fully aware of the paedophilia in the Catholic church. He has made no motions to hand over the perpetrators to the Police.

Complicit by his non-actions, Ratzinger should be prosecuted.

Why is the Church above the law..?

One thing that does always concern me in this type of case is the ability of the accused person to be able to put together a defence to the allegation.I suspect once these cases come to court there is almost a "presumed" guilt of the accused.

I am the father of three daughters now all grown up,married with children of their own,but what defence would I or anyone in a similar position be able to put together against an allegation of abuse many years previous.
