Illegal immigrants - What is going on? on 16:08 - Aug 8 with 3039 views | dirk_doone | We've left the EU. We are now going to become a dumping ground for the continent's illegal immigrants. Why should they bother to stop them? The EU rule that they can be sent back to the first EU country they arrived in will no longer apply. The main reason they head for England is not because of our benefits but because in most cases, English is the only foreign language they know. Those who come from former French colonies, like Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Algeria, choose France. [Post edited 8 Aug 2020 16:19]

Why should they bother to stop them? Well, because they could kill themselves travelling the Channel and the immigrants are already in a safe country. Are you happy to pay for unchecked people to live in luxury hotels, when hard working people in this country are losing their jobs?

Nope, there isn't any football at the moment, all sorts of subjects get posted on here and this can be moved to the non- football thread if necessary. If you don't like the thread, that's fine, just don't look at it. [Post edited 8 Aug 2020 16:24]

The point is, it must be costing lots of money to pay the hotels. They even took these illegal immigrants on an all expenses paid trip to Anfield. That will put them off I'm sure. [Post edited 8 Aug 2020 16:36]

Because some people like discussing it. If you don't, then don't! It's not your worry is it. And don't be so aggressive, with the swearing, that's against the rules. [Post edited 8 Aug 2020 16:50]

Illegal immigrants - What is going on? on 16:52 - Aug 8 with 2928 views | Ripleys_revenge | With hotels suffering with low occupancy due to the impacts of Covid, I would have thought they would be glad of subsidised guests helping to keep their businesses afloat - regardless of where they come from. Given the current cabinet's stance towards immigration, I doubt you need to worry about immigrants taking advantage of this government's conscience. I saw with some dismay today how MPs are said to be 'studying' Australian style immigration policies. If you've ever seen what happens to immigrants in detention centres in Australia, you'll probably find this helps you sleep very soundly tonight. Farage's Partrirge style trip to the hotel was a cringeworthy and desperate act from a man who reached his peak in 2016 and has been declining ever since. Also did you read the article? These are asylum seekers, not illegal immigrants: "Unlike irregular migrants who may be in breach of the law, asylum seekers are those attempting to legitimately and legally make a claim to sanctuary in the UK — for example to escape persecution."

So unknown, unchecked people sailing over on a dinghy isn't illegal? And also very dangerous for the immigrants and us. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53704809 Kids coming over alone on the open seas? What are the French playing at. [Post edited 8 Aug 2020 17:03]

It doesn't matter what you and I think here in the UK. The question still stands: Why would the French bother to stop them?

Illegal immigrants - What is going on? on 19:52 - Aug 8 with 2763 views | kernow | What is going on? Desperate people being exploited by criminals. Why should the French stop them? At the moment they are still regarding UK as a European partner and ally and are intercepting small boats in French waters.

Not just kids. Adult lives matter too. I don’t see why the French and British law enforcement agencies can’t work together to take out the criminals making a fortune out of these desperate people. Earlier a BBC reporter was on a French beach and filmed some of these crimes walking away unchallenged. They phoned the French police but no one turned up. Cut it out at the source. Once they are on the water it is often too late and much harder to deal with them. [Post edited 8 Aug 2020 20:16]

Exactly. The illegal activity is happening on French land. Yes, sure they can work together but the French police not turning up and the French just allowing a boat full of children and adults to cross the water to their possible death, when they are already in a safe country is terrible is it not? And why are they so desperate when they are already in a perfectly safe country? [Post edited 8 Aug 2020 20:39]

Many of these refugees come from ex British colonies such as Sudan, Egypt and Somalia. France to them isn't a friendly environment Britain is the tolerant promised land. Like Dune says many of them will speak some english but they obviously don't read the tabloids or this forum.

I've got a better idea, lets send some warships out there to stop them, it's only going to cost us 1.4 million per boat per day.

That question has already been answered but you must have missed it: language. Apart from in former French colonies, the main foreign language taught in schools around the world is English. Most immigrants who come here say they want to study here and/or get a job here. It's difficult to do either if you don't speak any of the language. That's why immigrants who have learned French in school don't want to come here. In terms of benefits on offer to them, Finland, for example, is more attractive than the UK, but very few immigrants speak any Finnish and they know it is a difficult language to learn. As Inthebox has already pointed out, former British colonies are a major source of immigrants to this country. The majority of black and muslim people in this country, who were the real reason may people voted for Brexit, although few like to admit it, are from Commonwealth countries. It's highly likely that now we have left the EU, the immigrants from European countries, like Poland, will depart and be replaced by more immigrants from Commonwealth countries, like Nigeria. Would have thought that currently the overcrowded beaches, wasted money on unsuitable companies for unusable PPE equipment and failing track and trace system was more important than migrants trying to get into the country https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/breaking-uk-weather-eight-full-22485193

Illegal immigrants - What is going on? on 12:07 - Aug 10 with 2110 views | DorsetIan | Some interesting stats here. https://www.unhcr.org/uk/asylum-in-the-uk.html Particularly, the fact that as at the end of 2018 there were about 170,000 refugees and asylum claimants in the UK; whereas there were about 3,700,000 in Turkey. Our GDP is approx 3.5x that of Turkey and yet they are home to about 20x (TWENTY x) the number of refugees. Time for right-wing cry-babies to get some perspective.

What a weird comparison. Perhaps we need to take more Mexicans and South Americans as the US seem to be taken the brunt over the pond.
