This global warming….. when did it start?

Agreed we’re POSSIBLY heading to record temperatures but I recall it being just a degree or so less than today 32 years ago.
That broke a record that had stood for 79 or so years.

So….. when did we all realise we are going to die in a mass fireball?
The globe will heat up and cool down as it has done for thousands of years. I agree we can slow it or speed it up but you’ll never change it.

My focus would remain on mankind stopping the pollution of its habitats

Yes, even on its own, without any influence from mankind, the planet will have cold spells and warm spells but:
- The effect of greenhouse gas emissions on climate has been proven by myriad scientific studies
- We know that human activity has hugely increased the levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
- The extremes are getting more extreme
- Extreme weather is becoming more common
- Remember that the issue is not local conditions but average global temperatures. There may be outliers in one area which do not fit with the global trend, e.g. the medieval warm period, which only affected the UK and other parts of the North Atlantic region.

One really worrying thing is that the '76 heatwave feels like only yesterday to me. I vividly recall deploying my Airfix soldiers in the mini-canyons which had appeared in our front lawn

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

My dog had 2 good walks by 9 30 will take out again at 8 to 8 30 he hates this heat

Given the hot weather, my son wanted to give out bowls of water to dogs being walked along our street. All well and good, but he came in after about half an hour telling me that it was so hot that nobody was out walking their dogs.

That's good to hear. It really boils my pish when I see idiots taking their poor mut out in this weather in the hottest part of the day.

Id like to see them put in a north face coat and walked around in their bare feet till they get the message

Amazing this media blow by blow hysteria, and yet thousands are jetting off to countries far hotter than this in pursuit of sun judging by the amount of chemtrails - sorry, contrails - that appear over my farmhouse every goddam morning and afternoon.

Global warming started in the 1830's according to this article. The world's population then was around 1 billion. Perhaps we should be aiming to get back to those levels.

The best thing for the planet would be substantial reduction on population levels

you wont get anyone in power accepting this though as it goes against the governments and corporations need for continued growth and consumption

31 here but with a very slight fresh sea breeze so quite pleasant, day tripper levels are down and it looks like most people walked dogs early doors so the warnings seem to have been heeded.

We were at Stade de France last night to see Coldplay (not to everybody's taste, I know).
At midnight we finally got on the Metro and it was rammed tighter than London Underground in rush hour. Everybody sweltering, with outside temps, even at that time, around 30C.
Coming back from Poitiers station, the temperature on the car read 44C

My tip for a better nights sleep in very hot weather…

Sit in a bath of cold water for 10 minutes before going to bed. It reduces your core temperature for an hour or so giving you the chance to fall asleep whilst still comfortably cool.

Once you’re in it’s no where near as bad as you might think.

Bunch of wimps.
We've had dozens of days at 30C +.
But it is SW France, so normal for Summer.

Nothing normal about those wildfires though. The footage from there and Spain looks terrifying.

My missus thought I was mad a couple of years back when I invested a couple of hundred in a free standing AC unit. This was to replace one I’d had for donkeys which I’d acquired after a project had finished for a former employer - that one was a beast.

The new one paying for itself now.
Neighbours think we’re mad having all the loft bedroom windows shut but it’s the way to coolness with the unit running….it actually got too chilly at one stage last night!!
Only downside is it’s bloody noisy and costs a whack to run

I don't know why I did it really, it was stupid. I think I was just going to say I hope everyone is getting through the heat okay, draw the curtains, open the windows kind of thing. I shouldn't have because all the clearly astonishingly highly qualified climate scientists who bizarrely frequent this forum don't half wind me up. The thing is, time was when such ridiculous denial of the science of anthropogenic climate change would have made me angry, I would have ranted, made arguments, cited studies, books, journal articles. Now I can't be bothered because, ironically, hilariously for all you dug-in deniers out there, it's too late. It doesn't matter what you believe, or what I believe. The Earth system has passed dozens of irreversible tipping points, and if we all started living like me tomorrow - my ecological footprint is consistent with there only being one Earth - it would make no difference whatsoever. The climate, us, and pretty much all surface life on Earth is f***ed, and I mean pretty short term. Shorter than I'd like. And that's without taking into account the 440 nuclear reactors that rely on the continued functioning of industrial society not to melt down.
So, here's my idea: let's all stop talking about it, and when it's hot, we just say blimey, yes it is, have you tried a cold shower? Or, yes, the smell of weed coming in is annoying. Honestly, the climate change debate is so pointless. We'd be better off arguing about which way up to eat our boiled eggs.
I used to think that at least I might get the satisfaction of sitting amongst the smoking ruins of the world as we know it and saying I told you so. Now I realise that would be/is lacking in compassion. As well as which, of course, no amount of ruins will convince some people to learn the difference between weather and climate, or to understand that whilst, yes, other planetary boundaries are being transgressed, it's climate that's going to get us.

Sadly you’re right. Alas even now, way too many folks just don’t know what’s coming.

More annoyingly, the recent window dressing exercise in Glasgow was an utter waste of time; as not only had the ship long since sailed, governments are even stepping back on commitments made.

Covid gave a brief glimpse of how reduction in carbon emissions can make a difference. However, the reality of the situation is that turkeys in high places have still been voting for Christmas despite knowing the truth of what’s coming.

Food and water scarcity will lead to growing insecurities, and with rising sea levels we’re going to see forced migration on a huge scale, that will lead to all manner of problems.

The South Sea islands, Bangladesh and most of the Gulf countries will be uninhabitable soon. If your home is close to the English east coast, you’re in as perilous a position too.

The two posts by kropotkin41 and PlanetHoneywood above are sadly all too true. I started working on climate change issues in an international development context nearly 20 years ago. We said then the effects were already happening in places like Bangladesh and Kenya but didn't expect what we're seeing now right across the world to really kick in until mid century. The pace of change is absolutely alarming and has surprised even many in the scientific community.

From tomorrow UK temperatures will return to normal and we'll largely forget how uncomfortable and inconvenient these two days have been. But, as has been said, in the near future we're headed for so, so much more than a few hot days. Heat, drought, food shortages, disease, storms, rising sea levels, conflicts over water, climate change refugees, and more. And there's little we can do to stop it now.

Well now you’ve got it out of your system pull up a chair next to the A/C unit; get a beer out of my F rated fridge and let’s talk about the forthcoming collapse of the global monetary system.

Is there an estimate as to when we are all going to either be turned into charcoal or drown in our beds due to rising sea levels?
If it’s this time next year then I’d better get a wriggle on as lots to do; if it’s 50 years time or more then I’ll be looking up at it all from the fires of Hades saying “that Greta’s bunch of hysterists were only bluddy right all along you know”
