Abdulai on 17:00 - Mar 1 by Whiterockin | Started on the bench again and came on in the 82nd minute when 1-0 up. Lost 2-1, we will have to wait and see how this pans out. Possibly our coaching staff were right about him. |
I'm no football expert, but even I could see that Abulai hasn't got it, maybe in the lower divisions he'll do ok and make a iving.

Our coaching staff weren't right about him being a winger, which was the main issue. He was one of many who Williams clearly didn't have the first idea how to use. Ultimately he may have found his level as a central player, but that still doesn't excuse the negligent insanity of us playing him out wide time and time again. If anything it actually makes it worse, because we would have been using a player who may not even have been good enough in his chosen position in one that plainly wasn't. [Post edited 2 Mar 12:37]

I have seen him play for the u21s as a central defender, full back, central midfield, wide midfield and even up front. I was at one game and discussed Abdulai during halftime with someone very knowledgeable of the development set up. They described him as a bit of an enigma. Good in defence but not physically strong enough. Decent in central midfield but again not strong enough, sloppy passing and gave away the ball too easily. Wide he was better as he had pace and could shoot but again sloppy with his passing which was hit or miss. This was before he got a couple of chances in the first team squad. Looking at how he played then it is difficult to disagree with the appraisal I was given. There is no way he could have been trusted in central midfield. He moved to Orient and his second game played well against a very weak Exeter defence ravaged with injuries. The first 3 games for Orient he played left midfield, the 4th he played up front against Mansfield the next game against Lincoln he played advanced midfield and has been on the bench since. (Thanks again to my mate who gave me the Orient appraisal, as well as the u21 one). There is a good player in there somewhere, whether he can adapt to first team football is another question. I hope so as we have a decent sell on. There are many sticks to hammer Williams with and yes he deserves it but Abdulai is not one. [Post edited 2 Mar 14:58]

Surely playing him time and time again was an issue. He is league one at best, it’s a shame he had so much going for him a few years back. Maybe he just isn’t good enough for the level he wants to play at.

He did start the last two matches, but I think he is a League One utility player at best. Never a Championship midfielder. I could be wrong but the signs are there.

No Ethan Galbraith this evening, not sure why. We bid a million for him on deadline day. A bit of a Karlan Grant cover up type attempt.

He started for Northern Ireland on Friday but didn't even make the bench on Tuesday. Possibly injured. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I have seen him 7-8 times in the u21 in big wins at the stadium and in a league cup game v Northampton I think. I do not recognise your description of him at all. He rarely gave the ball away . His problem was he was a runner not passer and this did not fit in with Williams static passing game where there's was no movement. Abdullai was box to box and similar to De Guzman. He delivered the call from defence to forward by running with the ball. Williams did not like midfield runners preferring Grimes aging Allen and Fulton. In the league cup game Abdullai combined beautifully with Wood as two tall athletic runners careful with the ball. [Post edited 27 Mar 22:38]

Edit - original didn’t post This is the problem with U21 games. They aren’t a reliable indicator of how players will do in the first team. I’ve only seen a few over the last few seasons, but they are always much lower intensity. Technique is prioritised over it, which makes sense while young players are learning but doesn’t really prepare them for the first team. Players, including Abdulai, get little cameos and aren’t used to the speed or aggression. Getting category A reinstated should be a priority if it’s affordable. I’d assume the games would still be less intense, but at least they would be playing against elite PL teams reserves. [Post edited 28 Mar 13:28]

Exactly that's why we have so many out on loan at the moment. League One and Two are far more intense than our u21s are used too, we are hopefully using it as a stepping stone. Most just can't make the step up to the Championship. As you say category A needs to be a priority. As the cost does not affect P&S is is easily an area we should be investing in. We have wealthy investors now, they could easily pump a couple of million in and if we started to produce quality, even to sell, it would be investing in the club through the back door and all within the rules. Exactly, P&S isn’t affected by academy restructures and expenditure regards upgrades etc. They shoukd already be in the planning stage for this. If these new investors are serious then this needs to be a priority.
