I've had a quick look, it seems these tariffs are not reciprocal, Trump has left Russia off his punishment list AND his actions have caused the stock market a few wobbles.

Well done Donald, you absolute plum.

If these tariffs were long term, would European manufacturers be better off setting up in the UK to export to the USA.

Thinking that through the idiot that is Trump could wake up tomorrow and say 40%.

Business hates uncertainty.

I think Canada called it right, time to build a future without the US.
As they showed in Ukraine they are no longer reliable partners.

Sad but true.

Tarrifs are not a liberation but a new TAX. It is a new VAT on anything not made in the USA. There will never be a time when USA firms make everything they want to buy. Things from Asia are too cheap.

It is therefore a new TAX. After the other countries follow suit everyone m pays more TAX as the money goes to the Government.

It is a way of raising TAX from the consumer who might not have any other US made options to buy. This way USA can reduce it deficit in theoretically.

USA deficits are huge. Tarrifs go from the consumer to the government to help balance the books in Dollars. Most of their credits want Dollars. Of more significance are interest rates on loans. In a recession interest rates come down.

The fall in oil prices with companies fear a recession could push Russia into dire straights which is a useful unintended positive consequence.

Why did Trump not put tariffs on Russia? Where is the USA getting its LNG from?

The USA's deficits won't come down unless they have more income than they spend and at the moment the US deficit is 1.15 TRILLION. and their debt is...36 TRILLION.

I wonder what the interest on that little pile is?

What Trumps tariffs will definitely do is push up consumer prices across the board...across the world.

Russia is already massively sanctioned. He wants to use sanctions on Russia to force them to stop their brutal attacks. LNG from America replaced Russian pipeline gas and is a lot more expensive for Europe.

Germany in particular have been very timid with Trump over the Nordstream explosion which was a US job in my opinion. US are making the eal good money out of the Ukraine war.

Growth is normally considered the best way out debt not a forced recession.

Where/how have the USA made money out of Ukraine? That's part of Trumps problem, since 2022 they have given Ukraine around 182 billion in aid, it's why he wants that minerals deal, to get money back.

Russia is sanctioned because of other things, these tariffs are a trade thing.

Germany...irrelevant to the points being made. How will the USA attain growth when it looks like these tariffs will cause a global recession?

USA is doing very well out of the Ukraine war and now want paying for its help up to now.

a) Liquefied Natural gas.

I believe the USA blew up the Nordstream forcing Europe to buy USA LNG

The amount is 45m tonnes at $450 per tonne = $20.25 Billion each year. Roughly $60.75 billion over three years.

b) The significant destruction of Russian tanks, Infantry fighting vehicles Military Patrol Vehicles artillery and trucks along with massive loses of the better Russian infantry. This means the Pentagon can spend less.

c) The use of ageing military equipment due for scrap. Old Abrams tanks and Bradleys in particular. The $100 billion + of aid to date is a notional number representing the notional value of Militarily equipment which previously was due for scrapping.*

d) The joining of Finland and Sweden means USA need to spend less themselves.

e) Increased Europe spending means US troops in Europe 100,000 can be reduced saving billions.

f) US want repayment for much of it military aid. It actually has a Lend lease deal but not used it.

g) Intelligence information of performance of US kit in the field with no loss of US personnel. There is a gold mine of information being collected in the field with US people not at risk.

* Pro Russian shrill use the vagueness of the accounting to accuse Ukraine of systematic corruption. The $182 billion in aid for example might include say $30 billion for Bradleys but written off or given a notional value of $1 billion. Zelenski clearly cannot know all this. Shrills will then say "$29 billion is uncounted for" in headlines.

Trump is talking about $350 billion which might be off the shelf prices for "replacement as new".

USA has become seriously unreliable. This will cost them big time in the future and even now.

The US did blow up Nord 2, they said on record that they would.

We are buying more expensive lNG off them.

The best equipment the US has supplied Ukraine with has been neutralised by the Russian military

There have been significant loss of US and foreign troops in this conflict. The last few days a restaurant full of foreign advisors has been destroyed with the loss of 85 foreign troops

Western countries have been buying up lot's of agricultural land in the west

Trump wants the mineral rights from Zelensky, but doesn't look as if Putin will tolerate that

The US has thrown them under the bus as they usually do. Create carnage and then bug out as per norm

They are treacherous and should not be trusted or relied upon

The way I see it the USA has had 100,000 troops in Europe for 80 years and seemingly wants out once the Russian tanks started rolling.

The red states have demonstrated their automatic machine guns are for bouncing oil can around the yard not a real war.

The noose is closing on the ex FSB man. His mates want to deal with Vanguard and BlackRock and Western Pension funds

If the USA is doing so well why does it want "paying for its help up to now"?

Europe had started getting its gas from elsewhere when Ukraine was invaded.

I don;t think the Pentagon are overly worried about conventional Russian capability, Ukraine has shown they are poor compared to Nato but there is still nuclear to worry about.

The USA only has Abrams tanks and they are not obsolete, they have several different versions of it but the USA has over 4000 M1's and they are not due for scrap just yet. besides which the world is rethinking the need for battle tanks as technology changes the battlefield.

The USA has been saying for a fair while that Nato members need to increase their spending yet your previous 2 points seem to be saying they need to spend more because of ageing equipment AND they can spend less...which is it?

If the USA removes troops from Europe it doesn't mean they will spend less, the world is a far less safe place now than it has been since the cold war supposedly ended.

The lend/lease deal was made by Biden and it actually expired, Trump has threatened to cut aid is Ukraine doesn't negotiate but as we have seen, Zelensky isn't the problem.

You also say that the USa has become seriously unrelaible, I said that weeks back and that Europe needed to look to itself now. Then you say this will cost the USA now and in the future, you contradict yourseelf again. How can they be both better off and worse off? They either have to soend the money ir they don't, they either save money or they don't.

Trumps tariffs look like causing a global recesision so we will ALL be worse off.

The USA is doing fine that is why the S&P 500 was racking up to last month. Trump is a hustler by nature and wants it all.

Europe got shale gas fro North America at a higher cost which is good for USA. I even gave you rough figures.

If the USA was not worried by 8,000 Russian tanks why do they have 100,000 troops in Europe still. Ukraine has heroically reduced the Russian army massively well over 50% and new production cannot keep up. This gives Trump the option or relocating some of these troops or laying them off the public purse.

USA sent about 170 Bradleys (light fast tanks) but 3/4 have been lost. They are light and better suited to the conditions doing hit and run missions.

USA is using the Ukraine war to bring forward new kit a year or two. Trump wants the old kit to be paid for. Other nations who are not hustlers were prepared to write them off as was Biden. It is the same with Joey Allen. Swansea could have sold him in January and asked for £10m. Trump is charging the full value for Joey £15m the 2011 price. Coleman is not Trump and would have given him a free to get his wages off the books.

USA always had to replace t its kit and it is more expensive. Finland and Sweden have capabilities and with the rest of Europe allow USA solders to relocate to the south Pacific. (saving billions).

Lend lease was never taken up and was agreed by Ukraine. It can be restarted at any time. UK had one in 1944.

Unless they change their ways the military production complex will lose big orders. F35s for example. USA technician are needed t for back up support and maintenance. If USA threatens its partners with non compliance their partners will ditch them.

In the short term USA is f doing fine. In the long term y they will lose influence. It is not difficult to understand. I am not an expert but can read the way the wind is blowing.

There is a cost of living crisis and everyone is complaining about prices. In a recession prices drop. People with fixed rate bonds or guaranteed pension need not worry about it too much.

You litter your posts with irrelevant nonsense, Joey Allen, 1944....seriously?

The stock market has plummeted since the tariffs and JPM predict a 60% chance of a global recession, 11 TRILLION lost of US shares.

The USA much like many others thought that Russia was much stronger than she actually turned out to be and that's why the troops were there.

The USA under Trump are trying to profit from Ukraine's situation, it's shocking and sad.

The lend/lease agreement expired in Spetember 2023 having never been used. There is currently an impasse in Congress about a new deal so it cannot be restarted at any time until that changes,

You personalised all your posts for some reason. Ukraine can have. Lend lease at any time if USA agrees. It is a long term loan with low interest so should be of interest to Trump. He wants paying and the lend lease allows it. It is like having a slate on the bar. UK had one on WW2. We had to paid billions back. I used analogies as I appreciate not everyone that reads these threads understand it fully.

Russia was very strong. We have realised recently the the strength of the old Russian (Soviet) was disproportionately strengthened by Ukrainians who were much braver than any of us imagined. They kick the Russians out of Kiyiv with NLAWs and the US hand helds missile. Absolutely outstanding.

I have immense respect for Ukrainian fighters that want out of old Russian ways and modernies and be less corrupt.
