My attempt at a Durham-esque thread title.

Line-up.

Still no Samson, Taylor starts on the bench.

What do you expect from a side missing four of it's best starting XI and that's before two more of them went off! Plus of those that did play how many are struggling with knocks or this sickness bug? How deep do you expect a squad to be at League Two level? Arsenal and Spurs have been moaning about injuries for most of the season and you can be sure that their squads are significantly deeper than ours.

I expected Taylor to do more than keep the bench warm, even if only for the last 15 minutes!

Hopefully MM47, we have got away with one, but that will only be confirmed come the end of the season . Having so many unavailable through illness or from injury, DC will keep his cards to his chest regards Taylor and others, probably hoping by sitting this out will help their availability in the run in. Hopefully precautionary knock and substitution for Edward’s keeps him for an earlier return, but Payne injury looked more serious, but a fit Anderson now unavailable is a big blow, making the front line up really mix and match affair.
Last nights game could become the defining game of the season regarding the management and looking out the future of next season’s campaign . Teams always deliver better with stable line ups.
Perhaps the squad is not ready for the progression of promotion, has stated by Noah, but one thing is certain DC and NC has instilled a teamwork and metal toughness in the side that is difficult to defeat that has improved throughout the season which has to be applauded .

I too was very surprised Taylor didn't feature at all last night.

I only listened to parts of the commentary but from what l could ascertain it was Gillingham attacking and Colchester defending ...so in that respect, it was a decent point that keeps the play off hopes alive.

My concern is Samson Tovide.

Can he get through a season?

When l saw him at the beginning of this season l detected a different body mass and hence a different balance and movement required...could this have an effect on his lower back problems?

Taylor and Tovide as a front two is formidable at this level but hardly gets past a couple of matches before an injury or 'tiredness??' occurs to one or the other or both.

Colchester should still make at least 6th or 7th place in this below par ( this season ) League 2.

That's a fair comment. I've just seen DC's post-match interview where he said Taylor has also been unwell, but presumably well enough to be on the bench or what's the point? I think it'll take a miracle to make the play offs now. Too many players injured or less than 100% fit. Using players out of position is also necessary but far from ideal, like Iandolo and Tucker in midfield. Given Edward's hamstring injury a few months ago I wonder if it's tightened up? He walked off OK so as you say it might be precautionary but will be pleasantly surprised if he plays on Saturday. Payne is an interesting case, as DC has been managing the minutes of the older players but Payne has been ever present, and our player of the season in my opinion. He had a great start to the season, then struggled a bit in mid season but has been terrific again recently. Looked like a nasty calf injury and wonder how many games he'll miss. He's irreplaceable but I'm sure others will give it a go. Read looks a shadow of the player of last season.

Why should one of the smallest clubs in the division who have had a relegation battle for the last four seasons finish "at least 6th or 7th"? The fact we're still in with a shout come April is a miracle in itself and wherever we finish now this has been a positive season and a massive step in the right direction.

If you've seen Danny's post match interview isn't it obvious why Taylor didn't figure? It's almost like you're having a debate with yourself and giving both sides of the argument.

...and with, I believe Robbie said in his BBC Essex interview, a mid-table budget.

I saw the interview *after* my original comment about Taylor not playing. Even so, it doesn't make much sense to have him on the bench if he is not fit to play. Perhaps you can enlighten me as you know so much?

And I'm allowed to have a debate with myself, change my mind, express a different opinion to others on this forum, agree with others on this forum, let off steam after a disappointing performance, celebrate a good performance, even gently and respectfully wind someone up!

That's the "little old Col U" mentality that DC is trying to move away from!

Coming from the guy that called him "Danny Cowardly" after what Danny himself described as "our best point of the season". I just think "expecting" to finish 6th or 7th in this division is completely unrealistic given where we were 12 months ago and how it's been for the three seasons prior to that. And that's not me saying we shouldn't be striving to finish as high up the table as we can but we should also remember where we've come from and what we're up against.

I know and you still questioned the fact that he wasn't brought on. I don't know anymore than you do but I trust our manager and his judgement. I'm assuming he has far more facts at his disposal than either of us and he literally gets paid to make that decision so I'll let him make it and accept that there must be good reasons for Taylor to a) be on the bench and b) not figure.

He was on the bench because he insisted, he’s a leader, the team’s better with him, and we really didn’t have many other options. In an emergency he might have come on, but he didn’t because he wasn’t well.

There are surely mitigating circumstances if Colchester United fail to make the play-offs. If Arsenal and other PL clubs are severely hampered by injuries how much harder must it be when arguably the best three midfielders (Anderson, Bishop and Payne) at a League Two club are all struck down in short order.

I hope the Cowleys can somehow get The U's over the line but considering these blows it would be an outstanding achievement. Good Luck to them!

That was not intended to be a serious comment on DC. But in my opinion he made very late changes against Grimsby and probably should have used Taylor to go for a win but had obviously settled for the draw against Gillingham. We're in no danger like we were last season, so why not take a risk and go for the win? Nobody would have condemned him if we'd then lost the match. There was a move late on where Hunt played a great through ball, the cross came in but the lumbering Simpson was never going to get on the end of it. It was Taylor made for Lyle.

Come on we need the three points.

Bring on Taylor and Aboh

I'm now quite relieved that I'm not the only one who wanted Taylor on!

The benefit of hindsight. To be fair, no one knew at the time that Taylor was struggling with the Col U bug. Anyway, moving on (slightly), I see from Danny's interview pre-Notts we've received yet another referee apology for the penalty decision, should have been a foul to us. Without that slice of luck, Gillingham could still be playing now and wouldn't have breached our defence.
