Let's not forget 16:17 - Apr 6 with 4181 viewssomdale

JM addressed the GK situation and he and his backroom staff brought the very talented Waller to the club, then they addressed the lack of goals and brought im the excellent looking Jay Bird, who looked like turningbiur season around, both these lads picked up season ending injuries, add to that Rowling and East and you have to have so sympathy for JM.
The new Keeper just isn't as good, and Bird is a class above all but Hendo as a striker, these were huge losses.

Agree but don't know why we appear to be so injury prone.

Bird could still turn our season round but I think the new keeper will need more protection than Waller did from what I could see on the highlights.

No, you don't have to have sympathy for McNulty. Those problems were of his own making. Before a ball was kicked this season we needed another striker because of the situation with Rodney and Henderson. They were always going to miss large chunks of the season. So that's rank bad recruitment by the manager, or lack of it. Bird was a desperation signing, he was brought in near the end of the season and the manager told us all in his first post match interview that the loan signing wasn't match fit. Not great that when we are running out of games. He proceeds to play a not match fit Bird who unsurprisingly picks up a injury and then leaves him on the pitch at Oldham when he could barely walk..everybody in the ground was surprised to see him come out for the second half. Bird then continued to limp through his next few performances until he finally had to succumb to the injury. Probably out for the season as a result. So rank bad management again and poor recruitment, we needed a fit striker to see us through to the end of the season and you don't play players when they're injured because you risk losing them..which is what we have here.

Then we have the midfield situation. East and Gilmour with no replacement for Henry who left the club before Xmas. Did McNulty really believe that those two would go the rest of the season without at least one of them picking up a injury? Burger is clearly not a midfield player and wasnt signed as one. When he was collecting wide players did he not think about bringing a bit of help in for Gilmour and East? What happens now if Gilmour picks up a injury? I've no doubt he's been scrambling around at the last minute trying to recruit a midfield player but that should have been done earlier in the season. None of this is bad luck, it's bad management and poor recruitment, lack of foresight.

The goalkeeping situation is another joke, poor management again. McNulty told us weeks ago that Waller was playing with a injury, if that was the case then why was he still playing him and why was he not sent back to Burnley and replaced. So its not unlucky when Waller collapses on the pitch with a season ending injury and it's not unlucky when we have to yet again bring in another loan keeper. A permanent goalkeeper should have been signed in the Summer because the manager obviously doesn't rate Brad Kelly. Poor recruitment yet again. So unfortunately I don't have a lot of sympathy for the manager, i think he is responsible for us not having adequate replacements in key positions, having signed so many players over the last 9 months.

I'm not going out of my way to deliberately have a go at McNulty, my priority is the club and he's clearly not the manager to take it forward, that first half bore fest against Spennymoor tells you that. I also don't buy into the argument that those in the Boardroom haven't supported him when it comes to the budget and his excuse after the York game in respect of budgets was terrible i thought. He needed hauling over the coals for that. He didn't mention budgets after the Spennymoor defeat. It's up to the Chairmen what happens with McNulty but i think he's winging this management malarkey, he's a coach not a manager and i think thats obvious the more you dissect his post match interviews and how he derives pleasure from watching his sterile, politically correct football. He's been telling the players they're tired since February with nearly a third of the season left to play, managers dont do that, not when they've just had a January mid winter break and barely played a game. There's no devilment, risk, cut and thrust, its a reflection of the manager and it's all very predictable Not a lot of people want to watch it neither, never mind pay for the privilege.

Hes known we've needed a decent keeper, a permanent one ideally, we've clearly needed a strong mobile striker who can hold the ball up too for God knows how long but persistently signs lots of the same type of player, its not rocket science.

He's also set them up to play a certain way too many times regardless of personnel, not sure where the "sympathy" part comes into play though

To be honest we'd have been better playing Brad Kelly for the rest of the season. He was okay in the under 21s cup competition. Would he have made a better fist of things on Saturday? We'll never know.

On first viewing i thought the keeper could have done more for both goals, let's not even talk about the overplaying for their first goal, its got beyond boring

And he's faced 6 penalties now and not looked like saving any. Infact I don't think he's made a save of any note yet? The jury is still out - hopefully tonight we see a clean sheet and a win to get over Saturday's disappointment quickly. We've still not won an away league game in 2025 yet.

There are times when I wonder if shot stopping is a second priority behind an ability to pass the ball?

Looking at his passing for their first equaliser on Sat he's not great with that either. I've re watched that goal a few times and its woeful in the extreme, just a comedy of errors and so weak - which will be why we either dont make the play offs or dont win them. Awful pass by keeper, poor control by Weston, weak attempt to win the ball back by Weston, weak attempt to win the ball back by Gilmour, then defenders stood like statues as their player is unmarked at the far post and finally Barrett flies out to block and the shot goes through him into the goal. Criminal after we'd just taken the lead.

He actually messed up a simple stop in the early minutes of the game on Saturday and almost presented their forward with a open goal. He's indicisive though when it comes to commanding his penalty area and anticipating when to come and claim the ball, he seemed hesitant a few times on Saturday and left it to the defenders, their 95th minute equaliser being the best example, he gave the defenders a problem by not taking responsibility. He looks nervous and that could have been down to the magnitude of the game. We keep relying on young inexperienced goalkeepers though.

We were obviously desperate to bring any sort of keeper in at this late stage of the season. Waller will be a massive loss as he made a lot of saves like Spennymoor's 1st goal. Barrett has played 10 (mens) games in his career after Saturday so there is no way he's been brought here on reputation - just a keeper available and we needed one.

Yes, i appreciate that. I'm in the minority i think, i wasnt over impressed with Waller. I think his shot stopping was sound but he struggled with his kicking, we conceded goals as a result of him playing short passes to Gilmour in particular, acting under instruction obviously. He regularly got caught off his line by wandering too far from his goal and he was also sometimes hesitant when it came to him coming and claiming the ball. He did a lot of things right though and i aporeciate he is still learning his trade. We need to sign a permanent keeper, loan keepers might work out more cost effective but it can be false economy if it costs us in a big game, i believe thats what happened with the goals against Spennymore when you look at the phase of play leading up to both goals. The first goal we conceded is one weve seen numerous times under McNulty, keeper passes to a player on the edge of his own penalty area, he loses the ball and a few seconds later its in our net. Saturday was so predictable.

Will McNulty play Brad Kelly tonight or go with the loan keeper!

Look how many keepers this season at the club and Kelly gets over looked time and time again also there where times that even a keeper did not make the bench..

McNulty can't rate Kelly can he? Its the same situation as we saw with Ferguson, he went out of his way not to play him. It must be what he sees on the training ground.

Didnt McNulty state that Kelly is a good up and coming keeper!
I'm sure that McNulty said so in one of his earlier interviews as manager..

But would we have conceded more over the course of the season by giving possession away by putting the ball out of play or back to the opposition albeit in a far less dangerous area?

He's 21 years old, he should have broken through into the first team by that age, especially at this level.

I've suggested this previously that the loan Keeper Barrett seems to me to prefer to cushion his dives with his hands and arms rather that attempt to block and/or catch the ball, has anyone else noticed this ?

Brad Kelly has never really shown that he can step up if needed and he's played in several cup games while he's been with us now. I'm pretty sure at this point he's little more than a training goalkeeper and we're effectively paying someone a full time wage have players blast balls at him.

Call me old fashioned all you like but a back up keeper should be able to cover injuries rather than having to bring in emergency loans all the time.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

On the goalkeeping situation. With Lillis still registered as a player, I'd genuinely put him between the sticks for the rest of the season, I think his experience would certainly be a positive for this team.
