Great Games Played At Easter. 10:57 - Apr 17 with 1741 viewsSaintNick

1978- we played 3 games in 4 days and indeed 4 games in a week.

Sat 25th March, Charlton (H) 4-1 Williams 2 Funnell & MacDougal, not as easy as it sounds we were 1-0 down till the 41st minute when Steve EWilliams scored.

Easter Monday 27th March, Bristol Rover (H) 3-1 Alan Ball missed a penalty before Phil Boyer scored twice to give us a 2-0 lead, Rovers pulled one back on the hour, but MacDougal steadied the nerves on 80 minutes to make it 3-1.

Wednesday 29th- Cardiff away, not many Saints fans here as Cardiff had a scheme where only away fans travelling by official club coaches could go, we lost 1-0 to a 14th minute goal.

Just 3 days later we played Blackburn Rovers at home and beat them 5-0, John Bailey was roundly booed everytime he got near the ball and with 6 games left we were firmly in the top 3 automatic places.

Great times at the Dell Nick, when it was a joy to watch some very accomplished and skilled players putting in a proper shift. I didn’t go to Cardiff but saw all of the other matches.

My memory isn’t what it used to be but In regard to the Blackburn game :-

1. Didn’t the fans give Bailey a torrid time because he had got one of our players sent off earlier in the season during the reverse fixture ?

2. Didn’t one of our players ( I can’t remember who ) knock the ball out of their keepers hands, side foot it into the goal and the referee allowed it to stand ?

Don’t think that’s correct regards Cardiff, as I went by car and missed kick off, as game was unusually an early kick off 18.00 for some reason which I think accounted for the poor away turnout, plus with no segregation it was a dodgy place to visit then.

The other great Easter weekend was in 1976, when we had Plymouth away on Good Friday, Bristol Rovers away the following day and then Oxford home on Easter Monday, losing away games 1-0 & 2-0 and beating Oxford 2-1

We took loads to both away games and my mate went on coach (run by Roland and Bernie Watts, the which Clive later took over) which stopped overnight at Torquay in between away games, and as a poor student slept the night in a telephone box, with another lad sleeping in the boot of a coach

Not sure what year but recall getting a football lesson from Ipswich back in eater 1981 I reckon, maybe 82. Lost 0-3 at home, something we very rarely suffered in those days.
