DC's Super U's on track for play offs after Home victory over the Railwaymen 11:53 - Apr 18 with 1320 viewsdurham_exile

If a week is a long time in politics then 24 hours is an eternity in League Two football.
Bradford City proved last night against Notts County how difficult it is to get over the line in a 1-1 draw.

Table as at this morning:
PV 42 76
Bradford 43 74
Walsall 42 72
Doncaster 42 72
Wimbledon 42 69
Notts Co 43 69
Grimsby 42 66
COL U 42 65
Chesterfield 42 62
Salford 42 62
Crewe 42 61

In what is proving to be one of the closest promotion contests in years there are so many twists and turns and there will be more to come. After all, if Man Utd can come back from the dead to resurrect their Europa League hopes then anything is surely possible.

Our four remaining cup finals (plus three further Play Off fixtures as yet unspecified):
Friday 18 April 3pm Crewe Home – Sky Sports+
Monday 21 April 3pm Doncaster Away – Sky Sports+
Saturday 26 April 3pm Salford Away
Saturday 3 May 3pm Barrow Home

Key remaining fixtures in League Two:
18 April Good Friday
Wimbledon v Chesterfield
Carlisle v PV
Grimsby v Swindon
Salford v Accrington
Tranmere v Doncaster
Walsall v Harrogate

21 April Easter Monday
Newport v Walsall
Chesterfield v Bradford
Crewe v MK Dons
Gillingham v Wimbledon
Morecambe v Salford
Notts Co v Cheltenham
PV v Grimsby

26 April
Wimbledon v PV
Doncaster v Bradford
Harrogate v Notts Co
MK Dons v Grimsby
Tranmere v Crewe
Walsall v Accrington

3 May
Bradford v Fleetwood
Carlisle v Salford
Notts Co v Doncaster
PV v Gillingham
Crewe v Walsall
Grimsby v Wimbledon

Today DC’s resurgent U’s entertain Crewe Alexandra in front of a near 8,000 crowd at the JCS. Lee Bell has kept Crewe on the fringes of the promotion hunt though they are fading and today will hit the buffers after a heavy defeat by the Super U’s who are steaming to League One after an inspired set of results since Christmas.

The Railwaymen will be derailed in a 4-0 mauling at the hands of DC and his express team. I hesitate to refer to HS2 but the analogy has to be Stephenson’s Rocket verses the Shinkansen of DC at the JCS.

Now DC’s only problem continues to be injuries to key players. Teddy Bishop and Jack Payne are both still out and Lyle Taylor is out for the season.

The train is about to leave the Station and frankly there is no more room for passengers.

Looking for another clean sheet and a handsome victory against Crewe is likely to fall to the following today:

Macey

Egbo Kells Flanagan Iandolo

McDonnell Read

Thorn Lisbie Edwards

Tovide

Subs:
Smith Gordon Hunt Scully Simpson Tucker Jolliffe

Weather today will be 14 degrees Celsius in Colchester sunny and dry.

The large crowd will be basking in the glow of the sunshine and the glory of a season defining home victory.

Enjoy the game.

Get those seats in E1 and E2 replaced ready for next season.

Witham that is really good to know.

Prior to the main event I am watching Exeter v Burton.

Apart from the fact that it is a dire game the pitch is absolutely shocking and there is considerable standing water.

Anyway, Up the U's

Hmmmm.
Crewe far the more composed team. Better movement and ideas. Very few fouls and seemingly not bad tempered so what was Lunt doing?

U's need to be much more direct and assertive given extra man. Deserve nothing at the moment as far as I'm concerned.

How will Crewe set up I wonder.

Simply awful first half

We are now seventh without doing anything.

Port Vale losing at Carlisle.

DC will want far more from his players.

More determination needed
Edwards not in the game and I would have preferred to have seen Lisbie start.

Anyway we have a one man advantage and results are going our way

Come on we need the three points

We simply have to do better than this at Doncaster.

I've said it before but Simpson is awful.
Lisbie should have played instead.

We go again.

Didn't deserve anything today. Poor.
Credit to Crewe, excellent defence and better side overal by some distance. The penalty summed up our display although tbh what was it actually for?

Great support, over 7000. Who'd have thought it at the end of November?

Results of those around us could not have been any better. Pity we couldn't take the advantage offered.
What happened to Grimsby?
Look out for Spirerites with a much better goal difference.
Monday takes on another challenge. We must start scoring goals, anybody offering?

Worst penalty since Chris Porter hit me in Row S (although Chilvers comes a close, third, fourth, fifth, sixth…….). It wasn’t saved, Read hit it straight at the goalkeepers legs. Two points dropped.

There are people on this forum who know the longer history, but over the last season and a half I think our record on in-game penalties isn't good. Read had to wait an age and his nerves showed with a terrible connection. Everyone in the East Stand was on their feet before it was taken - huge pressure. Edwards was much better in the second half and, apart from the obvious fact of facing 10 men, I wondered if the pitch is slightly better on the East Side? The ball seemed to bobble a lot as he received it in the first half. I know Simpson has been criticised but Tovide was also poor. He needs to curb some of his antics.

Well I've had enough of Simpson

I would rather have seen Lisbie play today.

Frankly it was poor fare today. We seemed nervous and of course we never play well against ten men

Doncaster is now a more vital game and we need to turn up at yet another big crowd.

Two points dropped considering we had a half against ten men. But credit where credit is due, they defending magnificently, has only won side was to win second half. DC made the right changes going to a 3-5-2 format, making the approach around the box lot better. Only criticism was possession was tad to slow in knocking the ball around. Just lack a bit of Lyle nous.

On a positive note, great to have Bishop back, even for only 30 minutes. He always makes intelligent passes and keeps the opposition on their toes by making the occasional forward surge. He made a difference straight away.

Interesting comment by DC that, if he'd still been on the pitch, Scully would have taken the penalty. It was very noticeable that Flanagan ran from the technical area to the box, presumably with the message that Reid should take it.

I don't think they were arguing about who was going to take it, more like who wasn't going to take it. Read didn't look confident, me and my nephew knew he wouldn't score. Dreadful first half, better second half once we started to show a bit of intensity (in patches), and yet remarkably, as you say Gerry, results couldn't have gone better elsewhere for us, even Chesterfield drew. I agree also Gerry, the Spireites are the ones to watch now.

Incidentally, it looked like they'd transfers strips of grass from in front of S1 to cover the drainage runs, worked as well.

Sorry but please explain to me how we didn’t deserve anything from that game and that Crewe were the “better side overall by some distance”. I’ve never seen a team offer less attacking intent than Crewe did in the second half, pretty disappointing for their fans given their position in the table. A draw was no good to them but they made no effort to win the game and then celebrated the draw which pretty much confirmed they wouldn’t be making the play-offs!

I'm afraid MP I have to agree. Despite having a play-off spot in their sights, Crewe did virtually nothing to take that chance, even with 11 players on the pitch first half. However poor we were first half, and didn't take the multiple chances we created in the second half, Crewe were definitely not the better side overall.
