York due to virtue of their points tally and the history of the City & its football team - I remember them knocking Man Utd of the League Cup as I looked at the score thinking someone on the teletext was having a wind up.
Sorry S****end, as far as I'm concerned they can enjoy their continued rivalry with Braintree Town... It made me laugh when they were singing "one team in Essex" - obviously they haven't looked at the EFL league table lately as we're the one team in Essex.
Obviously I've gone local (to me), but you can't argue on merit it should be York City. When you consider the points gap between York and Southend, in League 2 that would be the equivalent of Newport County having a shot at the play-offs against Walsall!

The way Walsall collapsed last season I think Newport would beat them tbh. I do see what you're saying though I think it would be more like Newport playing Notts County or AFC Wimbledon...
Whoever is promoted, it will be a return of an ex EFL team. We have had four seasons laughing at Southend, and I think it is finally time to renew the rivalry, and guarantee filling the stadium for at least one home game. Also if we are looking to get promoted next season, we would have a better chance playing a crap team like Southend, than a decent one like York.

And maybe they could be the first team to come up and go straight back down.

Sorry Mick but have to disagree
I want them to continue to whine how great their attendances are

Growing up in sarf Essex during the 60's and 70's, my first experience of watching professional football was at Roots Hall. As a 9 or 10 year old, the floodlit matches on Friday evenings were a magical experience. The only game I remember clearly was their very creditable 0-0 draw against Liverpool in the third round of the FA Cup in January 1979. The old South Bank was amazing that night. I also played a youth cup final at Roots Hall in 1976, which we won. The pitch seemed as big as Wembley. So some happy memories, and I did feel sad when they went out of the EFL. I'd love to see them back and to experience a game against them at the JCS. Two Essex clubs in the EFL is a good thing.

I don't mind S****end in the EFL as long as they're below us and we take 6 points off them.

A nice trip to York for us 'up North" looks unlikely now. Not sure Oldham is a suitable alternative ⁶though
That’s unfortunate for York City, but that is the lottery of the playoffs, wherever you finish. My vote for FGR is still good, and fingers crossed it remains so this time tomorrow 🤞

Wessex are you going to the FGR match tomorrow.
If so cheer them to victory.
Difficult to fathom how York imploded today. I thought they were nailed on to go up.
As a Northern Exile I have to favour Oldham now. We have a decent record at Boundary Park.

Shows what I know about football - fully expected York to win Play Offs.
It is is difficult for York & FGR as they've had to have a reset as they haven't played a competitive match since 05 May 2025 so will lose match sharpness.
Really hoping FGR are ready for tonight as I fear the Seaweed have momentum.
Never thought in a million years I would be wanting a FGR win

Am I the only one now hoping for a Southend victory?
Like many, I wanted York to succeed. However, I hate pious FGR with a passion. How dare FGR dictate what I can eat, drink, do. I have no problem with any folk being Vegan (it’s their choice), but please don’t force me to follow said doctrine. They should invite a burger van into the car park to satisfy we carnivores. Minorities in the UK have far too much power.
Yes, we can all “hate Southend”, but let’s not ignore the full house, revenue, and no lengthy journey. I can understand how FGR is beneficial to Wessex, but for the rest of us I cannot think of a worst venue. A freezing Oldham also isn’t appealing.

I’m not Durham, but as with any game that will have a direct effect on the U’s, I’ll be keeping an eye on events. The Shrimperzone match thread is much more instantaneous than BBC updates in that regard.
I understand what you’re saying Noah, but honestly it’s never really been a problem for me - one day not eating a rat burger won’t do me any harm. My last trip, apart from the result, was actually a good trip, decent craft beer pre match, and a half decent band playing in the marquee. Yes, Southend would be good for the coffers (apart from the police bill), but I just can’t get past how much I want them to stay non-league for a few more years yet.

No, you're not Noah. I happen to think that two Essex sides in the EFL is good for football in the County, north, mid and south. I don't give a stuff about a West Country team, or those in the North for that matter. Local derbies are the essence of competitive football.

Well we'll know in a couple of hours whether the local derby is possibly back on, or it's another season in the doldrums for the Seaweed. Southend start with Hopper up front, Coker as attacking midfielder and Goodliffe in the heart of defence. Macca Bonne on the bench.
Edit: LOL, my mistake, it's Ollie Coker, not Ben Coker, who's now a free agent after winning promotion with Barnet.
