Cup final tangential thoughts. 12:16 - May 16 with 8577 viewsEsox_Lucius

My first one was my empathy for Daniel Bennie, the poor fecker was limping around the pitch at the end as the rest of the squad were running to all corners with the cup and having their pictures taken and he was missing out on all of them. The only one who seemed to take the time to get him involved was Salamon, I hope Ian Randall took a few pics for him to remember the night in a good way.
Second one harks back to a Sky live game pre covid and Dave Thomas, with quite a number of R's around him spotted Jamie Redknapp walking up from White City station and turned and pointed to him shouting "Look, look over there..." and as Redknapp looked to acknowledge it Dave finished with " it's England international Michael Owen" Redknapp grinned and then flipped him off. At the game last night I saw Jamie chatting to some two seats away so I reprised it with " Hey, Chris (Kemp) look over here here. look who it is; Michael Owen" Jamie shook his head and grinned. I don't think he remembered Dave's original jibe but it made me wonder if he gets that a lot as he didn't seem to mind at all.
WRT the game itself, I thought Putman did an excellent job on the Bees #7

The grass is always greener.

Had a chat with a couple of Brentford fans at work today. One went and said we were the better team.

The other, who is a ST holder and goes to all the away games, said this about their youth setup.
'The club doesn't care, it's done for lip service as we're forced to by the PL. None of them last night will play for us anyway so not bothered.'

Now, if I was a Brentford fan I would not be happy if the club is doing that. Eventually they will be relegated and they'll have nothing to fall back on. Their 1st team squad is starting to age and its only going to take one or two bad transfer window and they could be in real trouble.

That Brentford fan is either being deliberately disingenuous or doesn't understand the situation. Brentford put a strong emphasis on their B team and have done for 10 years. They spend money signing players in the 17-19 age bracket and put them into the B team and aim to progress them either to the first team or sell them for a profit. The team they put out last night cost money to assemble.

They closed their academy in order to focus their attention on the B Team. However, UEFA have requirements for clubs entering their competitions, which Brentford wanted to aim for, and now the PL have adopted similar rules too, meaning Brentford have had to re-open an academy. It's a Cat 2, like ours.

I think your colleague was trying to downplay it because they lost.

Really enjoyed last night and good point from the OP - yes, did also really feel for Bennie.

Not so much a thought as a question - the bloke I was next to last night seemed to know a fair bit more of than me and suggested that if we won, we'd become a Cat 1 academy. Does anyone know if that is true? I'd always thought it was something which depended on whether the club wanted to invest in making it happen or not, rather than something you 'qualified' for....

Final thought. Booing the officials when they collected their medals.

Pathetic, embarrassing and retarded.

I've never heard of Cat 1 being dependent on winning this or any other competition. I can't see the club becoming Cat 1 next season because, as you say, more investment, such as an accommodation block, would be required.

This fan is very happy how the club is set up.Yes I expect we will eventually get relegated won’t be the end of the world but wouldn’t be relying on an academy to come back up again.By the way one of the youngest squads in the league

An accommodation block is not a requirement for category 1. School level players, on full time academy deals, ie 16-18, need to be provided accommodating provisions, but can be near to training ground.

The biggest criteria changes are infrastructure (which we already pass under based on the new training ground and plans for the indoor dome, currently being rented across the road, which also applies), staffing, and welfare.

The biggest criteria change is for more full time staff, and QPR can pull that trigger easily at any time they want. Les agreed with cat 1, oddly Hoos does not. And given Hoos is currently leading the club, that would be why we remain cat 2. I suspect however, this to change, executed by Nourry. The owners want category 1.

Financial investment for full time staff is approx 500k more than current spend. Nowhere near what most fans think.

Esquerdinha might possibly make the senior squad as cover if he impresses in the pre season. If not a good loan out should be arranged.

Sutton is an exciting player but still has plenty to learn. Another who should be loaned out.

Bennie, for me, isn't ready for first team football and, again, should be provided with a loan out.

Tuck could end up going the furthest of the four in his career - he looks that good to me. But he needs to continue to develop physically and at a higher level than he's played to date. As a deep lying play maker, he'll have more responsibility on his young shoulders, so there may be a bit more needed to his football apprenticeship.

Agree dmm.

Tuck has long been the stand out youth player, along with Kolli. Both have the ability and upper ceiling to player premier league level. In Tucks case, his on the ball ability is not in question, but as a number 6, it’s not just the physical aspect he needs to develop, he must also develop the defensive part of his game, tackling, positioning, legs - acting as the screen that Jonathan Varane performs so well.

He doesn’t yet have this, and if he can develop it, he will make it big. Nearest on the ball ability to Ale Faurlin, with his deep play making ability, a position and skill we have lacked for years. If he can add the (exceptional) defensive ability Ale had, or get near, we’ve have some player on our hands.

However it’s a big challenge as the defensive part is not a natural part of his game, he’ll have to work hard on it, as it’s an absolute must for his no.6 position. On the ball, he is premier league, off it, he needs work.

I may well be misremembering, but I was sure when Les did an interview with LfW he said that he had directly told the owners not to bother with Cat 1 when building Heston as it wasn’t worth the expense.

I thought that was OK, but booing the officials after we've won and they've done nothing wrong. I don't get it.

He was heavily influenced by Lee Hoos, and later evolved his own perspective since that time / interview. The club have been planning category 1 for some time, without fully pressing the button on it.

I only watched on a stream but I thought they deserved the bus stop song, due to their petulant and obnoxious fouling and behaviour.

I've always liked Brentford, although, obviously, I always want us to beat them, as we moved from the Bush to Hounslow West just before my 6th birthday and used to go to Griffin Park in the late 60s but that was poor by their staff and players.
