I got the impression, that managers scapegoated him a bit.

Which I think is mainly down to a lack of too much going on between the ears. If you're creative and busy with your creativity, addiction tends to be less of a thing. Footballers tend to get bored a lot when they're not training or playing because they're usually not very bright or mentally eventful.
