T'2025 Test summer 11:51 - May 22 with 1683 views | D_Alien | Had almost forgotten... but the first (single) test has started against Zimbabwe Very much a warm up for what's to come: India, albeit without Kohli, which itself will be seen as a warm up for what could be the defining tour of Ben Stokes career as captain England 59-0 (T'other cricket thread could be reserved for Lancs) [Post edited 22 May 11:55]

T'2025 Test summer on 14:01 - Jun 20 with 1377 views | D_Alien | So off we go, and looking a dodgy decision to put India in until those breakthroughs on the lunch interval Apart from the obvious wish for success this summer, my main hope is that Stokes doesn't break down again ahead of the Ashes

T'2025 Test summer on 14:25 - Jun 20 with 1363 views | EllDale | I don’t like the way that some people refer to this series as a buildup to the Ashes. The winter series is massive of course but these are games against one of the best teams in the world.
T'2025 Test summer on 15:19 - Jun 20 with 1325 views | Daley_Lama | Before a ball was bowled i feared for our bowling attack. Post Anderson/Broad era will take time but this lineup does not strike fear into opponents i’d say. Jasprit however, really looking forward to watching Crawley try to work him out!

I think Bumrah is the one player who could win 2 or 3 tests on his own. We just don't have a bowler of the same class & I fear he will be the difference. Can't see Crawley working him out ( or Pope) but I hope to be proven wrong

And here lies the danger for Stokes - the less effective the spearhead bowlers are, the more he'll feel inclined to bowl the kind of spells that've done for him in the past. Already today, there's evidence he's the most penetrative of the pacers

Tough to win the test from here.. Win the toss and ask India to bat first on a shirt front of a wicket on a ground where runs come quickly. Terrible decision should have batted without a shadow of doubt in my mind.

Too busy looking at the stats. 'England have made a habit of fielding first since Stokes became captain in 2022. In nine previous home Tests in which England have won the toss in that period, they have batted first only once. From those nine matches, they have won six and probably would have had a seventh had it not been for rain in Manchester during the fourth Ashes Test of 2023. Recent history also favours fielding first at Headingley. The previous six Tests on this ground were won by the team that fielded first.' Just looking at this test though and we have a very inexperienced bowling attack and our strength is our batting - just look at the conditions on the day and not past performances (where we had Anderson and Broad). It was the obvious decision to bat today.

T'2025 Test summer on 09:29 - Jun 23 with 422 views | KnavesmireBob | I went yesterday, cracking day out as always at Headingley. Bumrah's a joy to watch. You wonder if his pace will drop a few mph as the series goes on if he continues to play most or all tests, how Gill manages his workload will be fascinating. Even if we lose this one I can see us being evenly matched all summer in an absorbing contest. India have become that bit more likeable and humble without Kohli's leadership, should be a great series and good for it to have some breathing space in the sporting calendar without a mens football tournament or Olympics to compete with this year.
T'2025 Test summer on 10:21 - Jun 23 with 370 views | Daley_Lama | With Jaspit asked to bowl a single over just before lunch/tea - i see minimal protection of him by Gill to date. Hope to see him at OT. Which was why i was so peeved with Smith yesterday. Krisna had nothing. He was bowling his last over of short stuff before new ball and had 4 men on the boundary. We (England) have been here before. We have failed here before. We have supposedly learnt from before. But he went and did it anyway and we end up behind on first innings. I’m sure the quickies would have preferred a first innings lead, shorter spell last night and hard ball this morning. I don’t think i will ever be 100% Bazball to be honest, oldgititis.

Strap in…. When it works it’s incredible to watch…. Flip side when it doesn’t work it looks a bit shambolic. It could really rattle the Aussies this winter if we can get the balance right in the bowling department.
T'2025 Test summer on 18:34 - Jun 23 with 125 views | D_Alien | Set up for a big final day, providing the showers don't intervene England will believe they can get the remaining 350 with all wickets intact

I was there as well. A packed out Headingley is always a good experience, epecially with two fairly evenly matched teams. A real shame that Brook didn't get his ton and some excellent bowling by Bumrah. If the rain stays away it should be an interesting final day. The pitch still looks good, much better than most fourth day pitches and the outfield is rapid.
