T'2025 Test summer 11:51 - May 22 with 8283 views | D_Alien | Had almost forgotten... but the first (single) test has started against Zimbabwe Very much a warm up for what's to come: India, albeit without Kohli, which itself will be seen as a warm up for what could be the defining tour of Ben Stokes career as captain England 59-0 (T'other cricket thread could be reserved for Lancs) [Post edited 22 May 11:55]

T'2025 Test summer on 12:03 - Aug 4 by D_Alien | Incredible finish to a really great series Shame that the Root/Brook partnership didn't quite extend far enough into the runs needed Rethink needed about playing a highly talented young player like Bethell who's played just ONE first class match since the turn of the year, and batted like it Very brave of Woakes to come out with a bat in one hand (literally) and even running was painful. Wouldn't have taken him down under anyway, but if that's his last test he can hold his head up after a fine career, without ever hitting any heights |
Indeed…and yet the powers that be continue to push tests into an ever decreasing corner. Teams can no longer play their best 11 because players and in particular bowlers need to be managed. used to be that there was a regular 10 day rest between tests and the series went from early June until late August…and you could pick your best players for every test. Getting to the stage where Cricket needs a regulator as much as football.

Probably the greatest test series we've witnessed, the 2005 Ashes, was completed on 12 September, in glorious sunshine

The other thing that has been lost that impacts on bowlers was the rest day. Tests started on a Thursday and finished on Tuesday with Sunday being a rest day. So a 5 test series was spread over 70 days. The current test series was confined to 46 days.
T'2025 Test summer on 08:33 - Aug 5 with 566 views | EllDale | Good point. Was the rest day a day set aside specifically with player welfare in mind though in those days? Or was it part of the then culture where nothing happened on Sundays? No shops open, no sport, reduced hours in pubs and with the likes of the Lords Day Observance Society monitoring everything!

Can't remember exactly when the rest day was abandoned, but it was well after the era of the John Player Sunday League 40 over competition began, in 1969 Lancs won the first two years, with the great Clive Lloyd dominant plus Farouk Engineer, "flat" Jack Simmons et al Think the change happened in the 80s [Post edited 5 Aug 9:07]

T'2025 Test summer on 09:17 - Aug 5 with 530 views | EllDale | It fitted neatly into the framework of the County Championship as well where three day matches started on Wednesday and Saturday.
T'2025 Test summer on 09:28 - Aug 5 with 517 views | D_Alien | As well as injuries, there's another factor that's suffered due to more recent playing conditions - over rates England have been docked points in the World Test table for slow over rates, which makes a nonsense of the whole thing Trying to fit 90 overs into the allotted hours is now almost impossible. I very much doubt any real fan of test cricket would mind in the least if a team bowled just 80-85 overs. When you think of the entertainment value we're seeing, it'd make far more sense to just abandon any regulation and let play happen naturally. Most spectators miss overs anyway, going for a piss and/or another beer Edit: but keep the rule of minimum overs to be bowled on the final day [Post edited 5 Aug 9:35]
