For one wild. Moment I thought the Crystal Palace Beer Fest thread was about, well, beer.
We need more beer threads in these football-less times.
I had a great couple of pints of Wobbly Bob in the Morris yesterday. 6% so you know you had a few.
Anyone else got a beer update.
Oh, the Plough & Harrow closes next weekend.

I had another dodgy pint of Pride in a pub in Holborn yesterday. Probably the landlord's fault but I've got stop drinking Pride as that's happening too often.

I have got to the ripe old age of 53 and completely gone off lager. Now, I am not looking to join CAMRHA and grow a beard but as a late adopter I struggle when looking at the beers and invariably go for the highest percentage. Old habits and all that. I quite like Fullers ESB what others should I be trying? Few Fullers and Young's pubs in my work and home vicinity. Richmond and Hampton respectively.

Sadly cask ale or Real Ale as we called it is less and less popular. It's not uncommon to go in a pub at, say, 2pm and find they haven't pulled up any ale since the previous evening so it's been in the pipe all night.
They should pull up half a pint or so and chuck it away. Some do, some don't.
I often have a pint of Guinness and see if someone else is getting the first pint out.
Fullers pubs are usually well run and it's not an issue.
Myself and previous poster DM have had issues however.
Proper Job is available in Youngs pubs. Youngs is so-so, but a travesty compared to what it was like before they sold the brewery.

Fair to say I find beer more interesting than Crystal Palace.

Kernel is my current favourite.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

The Sussex Arms in West Twickenham is on your way home, stop in and ask to sample a few before you commit...

I went in there on the day they opened years back - 16 ales on handpump !
What would you like ? Said the landlord. A glass of beer I replied.

Real ale is alive and well. If you're in the London Bridge area, stop by the Royal Oak, Tabard St which does the full range of Harvey's beers from Sussex including seasonals. Something for all tastes.

Another very good Camra pub centrally is the Sutton Arms, near Farringdon, whilst close by is the Dovetail, which specialises in very strong Belgian stuff (for a fee, but worth it).

The new Spoons in Waterloo Station is excellent (another one coming in Fulham Rd apparently), whilst both the one at Putney Bridge and down in Wimbledon are both very good indeed, and always have a good range.

Some good knowledge on here as always.

I've been a diligent drinker of beer for over 3 decades but never developed the right level of knowledge to challenge a barkeep over their pipes or spray it back in their face and declare it undrinkable.

Never too late of course but I'm at the point now where if the pint is decent strength, drinkable, not some overfizzed guff, and the atmosphere in the pub is nice, I'm happy. Am drinking a pint of Abbot in that sort of situation at the minute and might well have another. 50 something blokes seeking quiet refuge in pubs seems to be a big part of the afternoon customer base these days.

I'm many, many years teetotal now.

When I was working up North and away from home especially In Yorkshire, I used to love the locally made bitter, It was super smooth beer. I never could drink bloody lager though.
My favourite beer when at home was draught Guinness but sometimes that was a difficult beer to get right, not many pubs did get It right either, The Old London Apprentice pub In Newbury had It mastered though.

Like I say I'm long time teetotal and OK with that but once In a while I can be innocently walking past a pub, get the 'smell' and say to myself ''God I could kill a pint''

I used to go In the Crown and Sceptre before and after games with everyone boozing away and talking bolox and I wouldn't miss the beer at all, last time I was In There Ray Wilkins was having a glass of wine.

I had to stop drinking though, It was getting out of hand, I never quite got the drinking responsibly bit though, finish work on a Friday night, lock the site up and walk straight into the pub and have a session, I was so dangerously close to becoming an alcoholic.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

I think you probably did the right thing Ted.
I think I would only stop if I just physically couldn't get it down my neck.
I have a vague recall of a song somewhere in my record collection with the couplet:

Drinking Gin & Tonic in the bicycle shop,
Dying as a drinker is the only way to stop.

Hmm…..

Harveys is a lovely pint but as a proud Kentish Man I love to get a Bishops Finger down my throat.

I heard about the plough and harrow too. Fell out with the landlord or something. I had a nice walk out near Burnham Beaches yesterday. Popped into the White Horse in Hedgerley which happened to have a beer festival on out back. Seemed to have a lot of pales and golden beers on but I managed to find a couple of good bitters and stouts more to my taste.

Currently having a quick pint in the Express Tavern Kew Bridge which has a very good selection. Cheaper cask beers on a Monday too. Had a very decent pint of Harvey's Best to start and now on the Five Points Railway Porter which is spot on.

*Edit - meant to say cheaper cask beers hiccup

we played bristol city that night in the freight rover trophy, or whatever it was called....2002.
ordered food, but the kitchen was flooded, so we had to settle for the william morris.

I always look out for Harveys now, pushed out Timothy Taylor Landlord for me as first choice. There’s a McMullen’s pub near me, the White Swan on Vauxhall Bridge Road, their beer is surprisingly good.

I know that pub well, mate. They take their beer seriously in there. Lovely village and a great place to walk the dog.

David, regarding Pride. I’ve given up on that, too. I’m no expert, but I’ve tried it too many times recently-they can’t all be getting it wrong. It just doesn’t taste like it used to.

By the way, been in Herefordshire this weekend and had a few Wye Valley Hopfathers. What a blooming lovely pint.

Always, always, ALWAYS been a lager man and will be forever I reckon

Hated bitter and ale even though the old fella loves it.
In later life a chink in my armour…… really got into Guinness.
When you hit upon a great pint it’s like nectar.
The best I have ever had was in The Trout at a Tadpole Bridge in Oxfordshire

I’ll get back to my bottle of cold Menabrea

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

I stopped going to the P&H years ago, too many duff pints.
I like the William Morris. They've got an amazing Eastern European barman there. Covered in tattoos, looks like Lyndon Dykes. He manages to serve about 4 customers at once, juggling glasses and having several taps on the go at once.

Same. I'll have an ale now and again, but much prefer lager. I'm not a huge Guinness fan, but the Guinness in O Brien's (West Ealing) to my uneducated pallette, seems better than any other one I've had.

Another vote for Harvey's and for Timothy Taylor. Woodfordes Wherry (Norfolk) is a nice drop.

I’m going hiking and drinking in North Yorks next weekend so I’ll be sinking a few pints of TT Landlord, no doubt.

I remember many a lads night out back in the day when no-one even bothered to ask what you wanted when buying a large round: it was always lager! And usually generic rubbish like Fosters or Carling. What were we thinking?

I used to drive my little MGB to BB, park outside Stag, walk for an hour or 2 then 1 pint and back to Hammersmith.
The last time I went there it was more a restaurant.
