New pub ( never to replace the C&S) The Hawthorn 08:54 - Jun 15 with 5381 views | Andybrat | Giles Coren, Times food journalist, avid Rs fan and season ticket holder, did an article yesterday on Shepherds Bush and The Hawthorn pub on Uxbridge Road. Never been, booked it for lunch in a couple of weeks but he was raving about it. Worth sharing and sorry I am a Times Reader. Feels almost relevant as so close to the ground, apparently the kidneys are great

I'm sure they're alright, maybe 'down the spout' was a bit harsh. It used to be more akin to The Devonshire in Soho or The Pelican in Ladbroke Grove though, a proper food focussed pub. Still can't stand the service though - every time I go in there there's a queue at the bar while the staff are just standing chatting at the back. Also it lacks soft furnishings inside so can get very loud if it's busy with nothing to absorb the chatter.

When she died Coren tweeted "When someone dies who has trolled you on Twitter, saying vile and hurtful things about you and your family, is it okay to be like, 'I’m sorry for the people who loved you, and any human death diminishes me, but can you f**k off on to hell now where you belong'?" Her crime was to point out the nepotism that led to him getting the job at the Times. What she didn't point out is that rather than following his father's journalistic flourish he's ended up following his mother's, the anaesthetist.

New pub ( never to replace the C&S) The Hawthorn on 20:43 - Jun 17 by 222gers | I'm going to renew my ST next week, so will try the Hawthorn. Anyone know if they've got ale ? I'll report on the scran. I always do a Bush pub crawl when I go over to renew. May be a bit too hot for much walking though. That's OK, more drinking time ! |
The Hawthorn has been advertised by Breakspears, which is one of my favourite ales, so I would expect so. After the closure of the brewery in Henley it was brewed by Wychwood Brewery in Witney, but I don't know who now brews it. I think it is part of the Marstons chain, but I'm out of touch with which brewery owns what!

I used to go to Henley quite a bit to do a crawl of Brakspear pubs. I went off it when someone else started to brew it. However, I was in Wangford a few years back and there was Breakspears Ordinary. I found it earthy and pleasant - a good lunchtime ale.
