New pub ( never to replace the C&S) The Hawthorn 08:54 - Jun 15 with 12333 views | Andybrat | Giles Coren, Times food journalist, avid Rs fan and season ticket holder, did an article yesterday on Shepherds Bush and The Hawthorn pub on Uxbridge Road. Never been, booked it for lunch in a couple of weeks but he was raving about it. Worth sharing and sorry I am a Times Reader. Feels almost relevant as so close to the ground, apparently the kidneys are great

New pub ( never to replace the C&S) The Hawthorn on 16:08 - Oct 20 by MrSheen | Now I’m going home on the Central Line, Goldhawk Road is a bit out of my way. Master Sheen and I have been trying the Stewart Arms on the Holland Park side of the roundabout. It would have been considered old fashioned in the days of old money, but we love it. |
'Stewart Arms on the Holland Park side of the roundabout' I've mentioned it before but the biggest turnaround in pub standards i've ever seen in a pub took place there. Got threatened with a knifing in there as a youngster, now a lovely little boozer. [Post edited 21 Oct 15:53]

New pub ( never to replace the C&S) The Hawthorn on 14:01 - Oct 21 by simmo | I am noticing the same in lots of places tbf. My session beer of choice is usually Neck Oil and it's complete pot luck how the pint will be in the Crown. Sometimes very cloudy, sometimes very clear, sometimes with absolutely no fizz at all... Maybe it's just that brand but find the general quality to be hit and miss with draught in pubs atm |
Ever since Heineken took total control of Beavertown and have tried to take over the world with Neck Oil, I've noticed the quality all over the place but hadn't parsed it could be the pub. But yeah, wild variance in quality

Definitely got worse since being taken over by Heineken. Gamma Ray, one of their other stronger beers, has got a lot worse as well. Both of them taste a lot blander to me than they used to.

New pub ( never to replace the C&S) The Hawthorn on 15:47 - Oct 21 by kensalriser | That's a keg beer isn't it? There shouldn't be that kind of variation. Actually there shouldn't be that much variation in a cask beer, but that depends on how much care is being exercised in the cellar and keeping the lines clean. The whole point of keg is that it should deliver a consistent product. |
I drink ale but lunchtimes always ask if they've pulled any up. The first pint can be awful, so I often have Guinness. You often hear people say such and such pub does a lovely pint o'Guinness, but as with keg, surely it's filtered and pasteurised so should be the same anywhere ? They serve so it so bloody cold these days it kills the taste anyway.

At the start and end of the cask you sometimes get an imbalanced pint even in a good pub but generally yes it shouldn’t vary too much. Problems with keg beer seem to arise with the carbonation process (too gassy/not gassy enough) and I notice Simmo mentioned a flat pint he had. Apart from cleaning the lines, keeping/serving the beer at the right temperature is very important. Cask should be cellar temperature (11-13C) and keg should be chilled at 3-8C (ish) depending on the beer style. [Post edited 21 Oct 16:55]

We went in The C&S Saturday and whilst the London Pride was ok it wasn't at the same standard as the old Landlord used to get it. He used to have it spot on everytime. The pie mash and liquor was bland Saturday too - Definitely missing something. Maybe it's just me..........

Hasn't Pride supposedly got worse? Although I think tastebuds can change with age as well.

I was in Arundel in Sussex the other week for a nice walk through the hills to Amberley then back along the river. Afterwards I had one of the best pints of pride i’ve had in years in the Swan Hotel then another around the corner in the Kings Arms which was well below par. It’s hard to explain and I can only put it down to how it’s being kept.

Just to expand on the taste buds changing with age thing. They actually change all the time and I remember being told once by a brewer that they regenerate every 2 weeks or so. Google AI recons it’s about every 10 days. Most senses do get worse with age though including smell which would affect taste. I lost my taste completely when I had Covid which was bloody awful but thankfully it gradually returned after about 3 weeks.

This gives a huge head and they sometimes let it stand a bit like Guinness. I find the sparkler spoils the taste of IPA style beers and masks the taste of a beer getting to the end of its barrel life.

The old landlord (big Irish man lovely bloke but I've forgotten his name) managed to get it spot on for years I remember him saying how much work went into getting it at that level on a continuous basis.

Was that Gerry? A top man, always took care of his regulars The fella with long brown hair seems to have moved on from the Crown these days as well

Yeah Gerry knew how to run a pub, god rest him. The Crown has got slightly worse since, despite recent efforts to tart it up. The Thai kitchen has been knocking out the same menu of food for years, the beer is hit and miss, and they always seem so much happier about being a rugby pub than a football one. I think the seating is more limited now too, coinciding with increases numbers since they got Sky back. All of that said, it's still the best pre and post match pub in the area for my money. The Shepherd & Flock is a better pub, the Askew too probably, but this is just like a comfy pair of slippers at this point and I hope it keeps going forever. [Post edited 22 Oct 15:44]
