I don’t watch his program, but I get his weekly emails.Tonight’s mentioned the savings by buying an oyster card over using contactless if you have a railcard.
Apparently you have to register your Oyster card on the TfL website, and go to a manned tube or Elizabeth line station and get your railcard added to your Oyster card and you save 33% on fares on the tube and Elizabeth line fares.
If you travel in London regularly you could save a fortune according to him.
I’m in London for gunsnroses next Thursday at Wembley so I will give it a try.
I’ve just seen that it doesn’t work with a network card, two together or a family railcard.

Thought this was going to be about a new new manager/striker/defender/CEO/owner (not necessarily all in one)

Oyster annoyingly only goes as far as West Drayton so those of us further out on the Elizabeth Line have to pay the higher fares

Do you know if it works with a senior railcard?

It does but not during the morning or evening rush hours.

Depends what station you get off at, I can get to Slough and change for Windsor Central and 10000% no one looks at any ticket

The saving expert? A goalkeeper surely! Known for his safe hands, enthusiasm, good communication and excellent distribution.

This worked for ages for my middle son travelling back to High Wycombe... until one day it didn't.
On that day, when they asked to see his ticket, and he didn't have one, they were able to generate a report tracking a bunch of other other times he had taken journeys (on various railways) without a ticket.
He ended up having to get a lawyer, and pay a fine of £3K (which was more than the fares that he'd dodged) just to avoid a criminal conviction.
Needless to say, he's learned his lesson now.

It’s amazing watching the fare dodging program on channel 5.Some are just so brazen dodging their fares, sometimes for months or years. And some of the excuses are pretty amazing to hear.

You can thank the mayor for this, Stow. As should all the over 60s in London who get to travel for free!

I think they’ve put it to 65 for new claimants though haven’t they? And outsiders only get the buses free in London rather than the tube too.

Mental isn't it?
As I've got older I realise that the law is there to keep "normal" people in their place.

I can get caught speeding at 32mph, pay my fine and the uplift on my insurance.
Yet, someone else can drive a car they don't own, with no Tax, insurance or licence, get done and then pick up a small fine and points on the licence they don't actually have...

If I get the train its more than £25. I've found I can park for the day in the old Kings Mall for less than this, so its not really much choice for me

We are starting to reap the rewards of privatising all our public services and the years of neglect that has ensued.

Its disgraceful, transport should be better and cheaper

Hear, hear.Transport should be a basic public service and not a profit making business. And it should be affordable so that people don’t have to drive into our city centres.

60+ for London residents and it's valid on everything (you have to pay 50% for the Thames water bus I think).

Not really true though, is it. No one is convicted for doing 32 and people caught doing all the above will be getting a lot more than a small fine.

I promise you, I got caught by a camera at 32mph
I was sure you got 10% "grace" but no, apparently speeding is speeding.

I've watched a lot of Police Interceptors et al and at the end of the programme they always say what people get in court. I'm always amazed when something like a massive long car chase, which probably costs the Police thousands ends up with a £500 fine and points on a provisional licence

Thank you for the tip, Stow - should save me a few quid watching Brentford next season.

Meanwhile, if you have (free) bus pass issued by an authority outside London (County Council or whatever), you can use this to travel free on London buses, too.

(Not sure if it applies at peak times, but definitely off-peak and weekends etc)

Just imagine how much you could save if you had 23 home games a season rather than only 19.

Lots of great little hacks out there to save/make money. I over the last year have got into matched betting through a company called outplayed.

Also, handy app called EverUp. It allows you to buy gift vouchers for online stores and also physical stores. You get a varying level of cashback when you use them. I use it with Tesco and the weekly shop. Just before you get to the till, buy a gift card online. You get about 4-5% back. It then stays in your EverUp account until you choose to either withdraw it or use it for other vouchers

In Berlin a couple of weeks ago, I paid €53 for a 4 day travel card, could use the S Bhan, U Bhan and buses, it also gave 25% off loads of attractions, so almost paid for itself, trains were frequent and ran on time.
Thing that struck me is there are no entry or exit gates, but they do have random inspections amd if caught without one it’s €100 fine on the spot.
According to my Mrs hardly anyone try’s to cheat the system.

Of course transport should be a basic public service and I doubt it could ever make a profit, even if you tried for one.

But in the end it incurs a cost, which someone has to pay. In the context of London, people often complain about the cost of commuting in and out of the city - fair enough.

But in doing so, they invariably mean the cost of train fares, and demand that these be subsidised. But this subsidy comes out of the taxes paid by the general population, most of whom don't commute, with many of them poor enough as it is.

Worse still, train commuters generally earn more than other commuters, all the more so in the South East of England, where wages are higher in the rest of the country.

And UK-wide, far more workers commute by bus than do so by train and are generally poorer paid. Yet we don't hear the same clamour for bus subsidies that we do for trains.

Maybe I misunderstood this but train companies do make profits - massive ones at that.

So there would not need to be a subsidy if priced right...
