Harry gone and Lewis looking more unlikely, how do you see this going. Yes, there will be more players, but these could be huge losses.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

I think we just have to accept we can’t compete for established players.

As fans, we get too attached to individual players. In the unlikely event we could sign him, it’s going to hinder our budget elsewhere.

As much as I think he’s a fantastic player and would be brilliant for us, we need to be looking to our scouting team to bring in a gem Birmingham and Southampton aren’t aware of. If that’s not possible, there’s nothing wrong with using the loan market to fill a couple of key positions.

I’d be happy with an O’Brien type and a proper centre forward on loan from top flight sides. We have a decent first choice in every other position, so use whatever budget we have beefing up the squad with competition, especially for the fullbacks.

It's no real surprise though.
Once the bigger cheque books are flashed around we are rarely going to be the same attraction to most players.
Hopefully Burgess can fill HD shoes and if nothing else having LOB for half a season has shown us the type of player we are hopefully scouting.

This is where planning comes in.

Don't wait around too long and move onto the next target/s and they should have a good portfolio of players of the same ilk.

Be a shame to not see him back as he fitted in but we need to look at other positives. An O'Brien deal would certainly be top end of our budget so a replacement will likely be cheaper which then means money can be used in other areas.

Massive losses on last season. But this is all about what Montague was saying about performing above our salary place in the league, we have to be savvy. Our salary budget will never be top six in the league so we have to hit above it. Last season our budget was about 10th, we finished 11th after performing well below. This season our budget level will probably put us in about 11th/12th position unless we can manufacture a significant sale, getting the deadwood off the books will help. We now have a decent manager who can use effectively what he has, we have a more professional recruitment setup than previous seasons, but we do need to be more effective with development. With those three criteria we can punch above our weight. Look at Luton, parachute payments and a bigger budget and went down, it's not all about money [but it helps] it's how you use it.

I always worked on the assumption he wouldn't come back anyway. Use the budget wisely elsewhere and we will do just fine.

Too massive misses but Burgess is in for Harry

That midfield position really needs firming up. O’Brien’s was almost our short term talisman.

There will be similar players to Lewis available on loan. Buying a player who is top end championship/lower premier league much harder.

On paper, it looks like Burgess is at least Darlings equal, plus we’ve brought in very good cover at CB.

Still desperately need a striker. Cullen and Vipotnik are fine off the bench, but neither of them are the kind of striker you’d want in the ‘spine’ of your team.

They have around five weeks to solve the issues which are still there. Pretty certain from what’s going on at this moment in time behind the scenes they will.

If the club can’t entice O’Brien his role still needs filling in central midfield. Someone with a bit of steel (not Fulton), some guile (definitely not Fulton), some skill, creativity, most importantly some experience in the cut & thrust of the Championship or EPL. I would argue this position is vital to being competitive, more important than a striker in our priorities

Hopefully Burgess can more than fill Darling’s boots

Agreed we need a decent midfielder as you say, but I wouldn't put Fulton down Sheehan used him a lot even when O'brien and Allen were available.

There'll be players out there good enough who those teams aren't interested in. We just have to persevere.

Surely there will be a number of players who will be eyeing the opening left by O'Brien, Allen and Grimes omissions as a chance to prove themselves in the Championship at a higher level or at least a place to re-establish themselves after dropping down the pecking order at Premier clubs.
Will our loan players return from successful loans with points to prove.

I find the fact we actually made a stunning offer to Harry and are seeking to compete financially for O'Brien the biggest morale boost. Too often we'd just accept we couldn't compete and not even try for these top players. This seems a different period in time where we are fighting to retain and recruit top top championship players and, to their surprise lol, beat 'bigger. wealthier' clubs to top players (ie: Burgess). If we lose out on players it's because they decided to walk away not the club deciding to walk away. How times have changed. Use the budget elsewhere - I'm sure there's some exciting transfers ahead.

Still to be confirmed but I think Burgess will be an upgrade on Darling. In his peak year(S) and more experience. Darling still has a lot of potential to improve but in the short term (next 2 seasons at least) I think we're better off having Burgess over Darling.

O'Brien was a very good player in a mediocre team last year. I'm again hopeful that some of the signings we've made will make us a better team, I'm seriously excited about Widell who I think has the potential to be a star. Franco was one of our best players last year before O'Briens arrival and I expect he will be even better this year having had a season of the championship under his belt. I'd love O'Brien back but I don't think we NEED him as much as we did in the second half of last year as he certainly played a big part in steering us to safety. I want him back yes, but if it's not him I've got renewed confidence in our recruitment team to identify alternatives and Montague to get deals over the line.
