Multi Ball new this season 19:14 - Jul 5 with 1410 viewsYorkshire_Dale

Was half reading a post on my phone today (lost it now).....apparently there will be 10 match balls used in National League games next season. Two on each side of the pitch and behind the respective goals. Placed on cones.

My first thought was back during Hilly's reign we abopted this fast approach and at the time it worked for our high octave play. Good to watch

Second thought was would it suit McNulty's slow build up play and passing out of defence?

Players would need to be on their mettle constantly and that in itself is tiring.

The other consideration is "useful" time wasteing to see out a result.

If we didn’t want to take throw-ins quickly, we still don’t have to. It’s just that the multi-ball system will mean a team will have a greater chance of taking a quick throw due to not having to wait for a ball to be returned to the thrower.

The most important thing, as you say, is that they’re switched on when the opposition have a throw.

It’s the balls behind the goals that will suit Dale as we will be able to take goal-kicks quicker. As we’ve seen Dale are at their most effective passing quickly out from defence. It’s when teams are set that we can sometimes struggle.

I’m pretty sure we tried this in the second Parkin era. Not sure how successful it was.
BJ needs to get the ball staff up to speed, literally.

"Right lads, just pass them amongst yourselves for a bit before handing one to a player"

But seriously, amidst the natural optimism that fans have during every close season, especially where incoming players promise better prospects, i think we should wait and see how that translates into performances. It will require a change of mindset and much greater sense of urgency and game management than we've seen

Nothing would compound how we fell short last season more than other teams exploiting the multi-ball system than us not doing

Exactly that, football is all about the mindset. We need to be the team that has the desire to grab the ball and play with intensity and desire, just like Barnet did last season, sharp in thought and sharp in deed. The only tactic they employed was to attack at every opportunity and see how many goals they could score..that was a quote from their manager when he was asked to give a break down of his tactical approach over the season. While everybody else was analysing data etc and worrying about opposition his players had clarity of thought. It sends a message out to our opponents if we have that desire and intensity. It appears as though McNulty has signed some very good players, he now needs to find a way of getting the best out of them and i would suggest that there needs to be a desire to play the game in our opponents half of the pitch, get the ball over the halfway line and then keep it there. We looked over coached at times last season and didn't have the options to switch from posession based football to a more direct approach. We have that now with Mani and we need to work on getting the ball to him and getting players around him.

The multi ball system can be a great advantage when playing at home, we firstly need a dedicated team of ball boys ( youth players) who understand what their job is and have actually practiced what is expected. It can slow the game down if two balls are on the pitch at the same time. Maybe that could be put in place for the upcoming home friendlies. A mindset from the manager and players to throw the ball forward as a first instinct would be good also. Too many times the choice is to throw it backwards to ensure we keep posession and then pass it backwards and forwards between the defenders. It slows down the tempo of the game.

It may help that the ball might not come straight back this coming season if they try and move it forward quicker. Should help having a target man.

Indeed, I was kind of hoping that McNulty would ditch his walking football approach next season. Unfortunately that is "hope" rather than expectation.
Whilst not wishing to be a Jeremiah and dampen anyones pre-season enthusiasm, the bald fact is we woefully underperformed under Numpty McNumpty last season with the talent at his disposal, and I fully expect the same next season.

The walking football and trying to pass it around in negative areas of the pitch was rolled out again last night and the ladies England team were cruelly exposed, constantly caught in posession, bullied off the ball and made to look like cart horses. France played with pace and aggression and England couldn't cope with the press.

It was inevitable that the era of "possession-based" football would eventually come to an end, as all styles are found out and ways of countering them introduced, ushering in a new approach

Those who've trotted out the "this is football as it's played now, get used to it" mantra failed to take this into account. Some of us have seen these fashions come and go before

The danger for newish coaches, who've only ever been "educated" in the one way of doing things is they'll be left behind unless they can adapt quickly enough. Even Pep himself seems to have acknowledged this

My take on the summer signings is that JM is recognising it too, but that's me being optimistic. The bigger question is: when you've spent three years pushing a system into a squad that still retains many players whose press releases on signing included "we're signing because we believe in the way the manager wants us to play" how much can you really change? The signing-on quotes should always be taken with a pinch of salt of course, and we've heard similar this summer too

As ever: let's wait and see

First run out is this Saturday at our near neighbors FCUM, Its come around quickly.

When we play our first home friendly on the 19th I assume we will be playing with the new ball (Mitre Ultimax) and the Multi ball system?

Incremental gains and all that.

It was always going to change, McNulty himself illustrated that the way we used Bird. For a while it was en vogue and pointing out the flaws and hoping we got results was all fans could do.

AS you say D4L, season is approaching fast and we must be ready from the off and these friendlies used to the max....vital in all this planning is a decent goalkeeper and up to press we don't have one. Drilling the team for use of the multiball system is a pivotal distributer in net. Maybe we will have to live with the loan keeper option again, but this also cost us some momentum last season?

That was pretty much my assesment of the game also. Even the late challenge by England was reminiscent of the to little to late scenario we witnessed on many occasions last season. Only the enormous rick in defence to concede a goal was lacking as France scored two good goals by their own endeavours, albeit with a slice of luck for the second. D,alien makes a good point about McNumptys approach being now embedded but the start of a new season is no better time to change tack. He won,t though.

Do we have to be so personal with nicknames?

Whatever we all think about the manager, he produced a team that finished 4th, a team with the best home record for years that scored quite a lot of goals.

Yes, he in particular fell short in the big games and there were some other boring, poor performances, but ignoring how well we did over the season as a whole only serves to show that we are incapable of recognising how much better we are on the pitch now. It also means ignoring all the times we didn’t play slow, ineffective football. Unless the players were ignoring the manager themselves in those games.

And I dislike the stupidity of playing out from the back all the time as much as anyone.
