Texas floods....time lapse video on 22:14 - Jul 7 with 1268 views | Tummer_from_Texas | I grew up tubing/kayaking the Guadalupe river all the time. Beautiful country - one of the hillier parts of Texas. I had plans with friends to go down there for July 4th for the first time in many years. At the last minute, I decided to cancel due to my sick dog Jack (kennel cough). Then the rest of my friends ended up canceling and staying here in Dallas. So my Swansea Jack's illness just may have saved my life. [Post edited 7 Jul 22:15]

Wow, lucky lucky you! Somebody's watching over you. A real, incredible tragedy! The weather service sent out warnings to the affected areas hours before the floods hit. However, the Dems are already politicizing it and blaming Trump: "Dems try blaming Trump for Texas flood death toll — but weather-alert timeline and even experts critical of prez debunk claims." How does anyone with a clear mind politicize this tragedy!

The very popular camp for girls, Camp Mystic, was founded in 1926 by E.J. "Doc" Stewart, a former head football coach at the Univ. of Texas. He also founded a boys camp two years before. The camp has high-profile connections: Families of Presidents and Texas governors often have ties to the camp - Former Pres Lyndon B. Johnson’s daughters attended, and former First Lady Laura Bush served as a counselor. Note: The flooded area is known locally as "Flash-Flood Alley".

If it has a reputation for flash floods, how is the facility licenced and still operational. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I've just googled flash flood alley. It makes this event even more tragic. These things don't happen just once, they happen time and time again. I really hope lessons are learned. This exact situation could occcur in a number of places in Wales and the rest of the UK too, we've been lucky in terms of lives lost but we won't continue to be. We've got a river named the Mellte, from the Welsh word for lightning due to how quickly it rises and falls.

Don't know. Probably because of the number of prominent families' children attending. This morning I saw an interview of a Congressman from Georgia, who said his two grand-daughters were rescued. They were there attending the camp with 4 cousins, one of whom tragically drowned. I saw another live interview yesterday with the Lt. Governor who stated that all proper warning protocols were administered by the Nat'l Weather Service. He said that a comprehensive review will be held, just as in other disasters and tragic events, to figure out ways to improve safety mechanisms. Because of the locale's notoriety as "Flash Flood Alley", I'm surprised that some type of automatic alarm system hasn't been employed. Alarms are triggered in lots of mid-western communities when a tornado has been sighted in the respective areas by the Nat'l Weather Service. I don't know why something like that couldn't be used, especially in populated areas either on or near the banks of these rivers when a flash flood is imminent. Very tragic! Lots of questions will arise at the appropriate time.

Further down the line they should look at corporate manslaughter. Just because the wealthy use the facility it's no excuse.

The simple answer is the camp shouldn't have been there in the first place, but you can say the same about Swansea Enterprise park. One day this will happen there. We've got pretty robust flood warning systems in the UK, but they need people to actually get the notifications and then act on them. Ultimately massive floods are so rare people think "they'll never happen to me" , unfortunately they can.

Yeah, not a surprise, it's a given that always happens now. And to a lesser degree, it would no doubt some Republicans would try to do the same if a Democrat were POTUS. I also just found out that a dear cousin who passed away a couple of years ago was a camp counselor for Camp Mystic when she was a teenager in 1977. This tragedy is really hitting close to home for me.
