16 and 17 year olds to get the vote. 17:04 - Jul 17 with 700 views | Gwyn737 | Coming in the next general election. Not a good idea for me but there’s a delicious irony when there are some of those furious about this are happy with 18 year old councillors running multimillion pound budgets. Of course it is, but I expected the Tories and the other parties are happy enough to go along with it, my eldest had always shown an interest when he was a teen, he's got a degree in politics as well, so no doubt there's plenty of other teenagers with a serious interest in politics.

You could say exactly the same about most demographics. She's pretty much anonymous. 16 year olds can can pay taxes, as long as they can they should be able to vote and have a say where they are spent.

I’d agree with you. The conservatives did something similar when they introduced compulsory photo ID to vote, barriers “disenfranchising” some groups were introduced. It’ll be interesting to see if Labour change the eligibility around photo ID to vote because some types of ID which are approved for older people aren’t approved for younger voters. It’s also worth noting that most 16 year olds may not have a driving licence.

If 16 year olds are not considered to be responsible to buy alcohol, a lottery ticket, drive a car, how are they responsible enough to vote. The are not considered to be adults until they are 18 by the UK government either. This is a major challenge to UK democracy and was not contained in the Labour party's manifesto. Looks like Starmer is following in Drakeford's footsteps in a desperate attempt to stay in power. This is despite all surveys showing the majority of UK voters are not in favour of giving children the vote.

It was a good idea to prevent voting fraud. They need to do the same for postal voting as well.

I'd agree with you if there was any evidence in the UK of voting fraud but there isn't In the last 2 GEs the were 8 conviction and 3 cautions related to postal voter fraud so around a rate of 0.00001 (or 11 out of 61 million) Balanced against the need for as many to vote as possible it seems a reasonable tolerance - democratic in fact.

Out of touch nonsense. They've had their rights stolen from them by the older generations and they are going to have to work for the rest of their life to keep paying the pensions of those that voted away their freedoms. The current mob will take away their human rights if they get the chance so sod it, the current middle aged, middle classes have screwed up this country and our relationships with the rest of the world so let the kids have a go at voting for what they want. You can be self employed and pay tax under 16 should the decision to vote be on if you pay tax.

But with significant restrictions on any employment until the age of 16. I'm not necessarily a fan of the voting age being reduced but I don't think it'll make a great deal of difference.

We don’t have a fraud problem with election voting, it was nothing but an excuse to disenfranchise some groups and rig the system in their favour. If voter ID is being brought in, then the rules need to be consistent across all age groups which they weren’t.

If they actually wanted to prevent fraud and ensure proper representation everyone would have to vote and produce something like this. https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate It'll never happen because most people don't vote. That's the biggest fraud.

Welcome mat awaiting but please vote for me when you get the chance or tell your now UK mates to help me out . Now any door which has opened for any sensible youngster who has a chance to make a change will be lead by their mobile phone generation and the vitriol on there , Politicians clutching at straw again to save face , or a real chance to get then to vote . Do not expect many new locals to turn up at the ballot box though .
