There has certainly been some kind of cultural change in the profession because this kind of action putting lives at risk would have been seen as completely beyond the pale in the past. If CPI rather than RPI is used, a different base year (rather than the most advantageous one) is selected, and hours worked are considered, then the alleged erosion of pay over the last 20 years is small.

Nope, only what they deserve.

I don't support strike action but these increases are derisory, and are the reason we're in this situation.

Just listened to a doctor on a picket line demanding a 29% rise but when asked what she earned last year she declined to answer . The Government messed up by awarding such a ridiculous rise last year and now seemed surprised that they've come back a year later demanding more.

There’ll be exceptions but in general since 2009 public sector wages have lagged behind the private sector.

This is why we’ve seeing these pretty dramatic corrections.

It's all relative other jobs have not had much in the way of pay rises also since the banking crisis.
They want the same/more money in real terms than they had in 2008, when the vast majority of jobs earn less in real terms than they did in 2008.
Effectively other jobs end up paying for the banking crisis but if junior doctors get their way they will not.

Other jobs should have seen better pay increases too.

Of course on the other hand Doctors could probably do any other job, very few people could be a Doctor.

No doubt about what you say but when is ever enough, the basic pay for a junior doctor is not great by any stretch but there's are a few add ons which need to be included such as overtime rates, unsocial hours payments a generous pension etc which before anyone shoots me down shouldn't be a basis of living standards but it is ,and is for many people in other sectors.
Last years award was never going to be enough to raise the levels where it could be but it was a start and now to come back again although foreseen by many is now seen, again by many, as being pure greed .

And being an established doctor sees opportunities for salaries far removed from " ordinary working people "

The triple lock was put in place because of pension poverty in this country the old age pension was so little and in comparison to other similar countries absolutely terrible, the worst of the lot actually by many measures.

The Government has just said they are going to form a committee for the first time in years to look at old age and pensions as they think pension poverty is going to be more prevalent again in coming years.

We both know that the police have been pissed on by the government because they can't strike. Pension cuts, working terms and conditions ect. Everyone should have the right to strike, there would be uproar if any major employer in the UK made new employees sign a no strike contract.

Sensible pay rises yes, paid through more tax and less welfare.

But it's not sustainable. Very few of the countries that have better pensions are an a worse economic situation than the UK or don't have other benefits such as a fully funded state healthcare system.

My understanding is they have tried to tighten terms and conditions in recent years due to them being on to such a good thing, I have close family in the police, high up the ranks and I can tell you now they earn good coin and have exceptionally good pensions.

The way to address the sustainability of the system is not to cut the poorest peoples incomes and push them into poverty with all the associated costs that go with that, its to address inequality in this country, eg take money off the rich and well paid and spread wealth.

For which they pay 13% of their income into. Deductions pension payments, tax and NI. Over 40% in deductions on earnings over £12k a year for the basic taxpayer.

very few people could work 200 + plus in the air or fly a plane or many other professions but like many and junior doctors are included ,they all knew the terms and conditions before applying ,if not then they'd be fools for not asking first.

I've been at an annual PF conference and moved to vote for the right to strike we're mooted but the overwhelming feeling was police officers would not support that move believe and still do they should
Because they can't has seen their terms and conditions and especially pensions blown apart but it's their own fault

Doctors have the right and their job directly affects lives

Tricky one
