Keeper, initial one-year deal after trial.

Haven't seen him play, but not the experienced head we seemingly needed to push Whatmuff for the no.1 shirt...

Thanks for the info. Again, having info behind decision making helps fans to understand it better, even if we might not all agree. Removing speculation in the way the club have with a forum and Fitzo has with his article has to be a positive.

Agree with that.

I remember Dale signing a 21 year old keeper on loan for a year not too long ago. Took him a few games to get up to speed but did all right after that.

Last time i looked he was lifting a cup called the world club championship and the golden gloves award too.

Good luck to both young guns in net this season.

The question was asked.

Jim was not happy with having 5 different keepers last season and the issues it caused. He alluded to younger keepers who supporters have warmed to in the past and that Whatmuff is very highly rated. He mentioned budgets, balancing the spending across different areas of the squad and how the club has tended to operate resourcing goal keepers the past few seasons. Jim did say he had spoken to experienced keepers, but reading between the lines that Whatmuff is better than what was available in our budget and that money that could have been spent on a more experienced back up has been spent elsewhere.

It is a risk, but one I understand. Would you rather spend more on a back up keeper who hopefully will never play or use the money for depth elsewhere? If things do go wrong there is always a loan keeper available.

It's not just the back up keeper though, its also the first choice keeper. A 17 year old rooky with no experience at this level. If lack of experience was our downfall last season and its something the manager himself identified then why has he decided to neglect the most important position on the pitch? The budget excuse is just that, an excuse. The budget has been large enough this summer to bring in a experienced goalkeeper surely. Why is the goalkeeping position the only one that can operate with inexperienced young players according to McNulty? Its a arrangement that obviously suits Man City and those who run their academy but its the complete opposite of what McNulty cited as our downfall last season, experience. I predict that we will be on the merry go round of different keepers again this season and the decision to play rooky goalkeepers will come back to bite us again. I sometimes wonder if currying favour with the local Premiership clubs clouds the judgement of what's actually required in order to compete with the best clubs in this league. I'll be surprised if any other club in this league has such a inexperienced first choice goalkeeper in their starting eleven. Anyway, its the managers call but we dont all have to agee with him or his explanation. If he wanted to prioritise a experienced goalkeeper the Ogdens gave him a healthy budget to do that.

I've not seen Whatmuff play yet but the fact we're clearly going to rely on him as first-choice this season has actually made me a bit excited. He must be very, very, very good for his age.

Tangled up in blue.

It's either a really poor call from Jim or he's being a little economical with the truth. I'm choosing to take his comments with a large pinch of salt. I hope it doesn't come back to haunt us.

If as seems to be the case that we are going with a young inexperienced keeper whether it be Whatmuff or Myles, it is imperative that we all get behind him and support him as I am sure mistakes will occur.
Appreciate that there will always be the situation that we could still bring in another loan keeper at any stage of the season , but I do fear that action would possibly have a devastating effect on their future careers

To be honest i'm more bothered about whats best for our own club than the future of other clubs players. That's the priority. We can have experience all over the pitch but if their effortts are being impacted by inexperiencrd goalkeepers then moral will soon nose dive. The goalkeeping situation cost us big time last season.

It was not having the experience of games like the semi and the playoff that McNulty mentioned in his interview. Not across the season.

Without disagreeing that we could have done with an experienced option, it seems to be the case they would only have been challenging Whatmuff, not coming in as a no.1. If an experienced option fell through and we felt the budget was better used elsewhere at this stage is the manager’s choice and one he’ll be judged on.

But the plan was there to bring in a keeper with more experience initially before things changed going off what isitme has posted - would have to watch the forum again when it’s on YouTube.
What’s more important is we have a consistent no.1, the amount of keepers we had to use last season due to injury impacted us far more than their age.

Let’s not forget we might not have a club right now if we’d gone with experience over a 17 year old in 1987… A good keeper is a good keeper.

I'm paraphrasing a little here but Jim's comment was something on the lines of 'in a few years everyone will know about him'. He has played for England Under 18 so he must have some ability. I've no seen him play yet. Hopefully he will do well.

I am not even sure (from what was said at the forum) that it was the plan to bring in an experienced keeper and Whatmuff was plan B when they fell through, just that discussions were had with experienced keepers.

It could be that they went elsewhere, were stuck and got Whatmuff or that Whatmuff was always the number one target and when he became available Jim decided he was a better option than the alternatives.
