But your earlier deflection missed the point i was making. Perhaps i didn't make it clearly enough, so i'll have another try:

It matters whether JM initiated the introduction of Taylor and Done to the coaching setup, or whether this was instigated by others at the club

This isn't addressed in the Fitzo interview (which is no reflection on the high quality of the interview)

Why does it matter? Well, the club needed to replace Gibbins, and bringing in Taylor and Done certainly strengthens the coaching setup and McNulty seems to welcome it

Being respected former players, if they perceive shortfalls in McNulty's approach, their ideas could potentially undermine his own. Taylor in particular doesn't appear to be anyone's "Yes man". If they're handpicked by McNulty, he can own that, but if not and they were headhunted by others within the setup, there's potential for disagreement. Now that can be healthy, depending on receptivity but McNulty goes out of his way to emphasise his core philosophy

I really hope it all works well and we see the necessary improvements. bringing in better players and a larger squad will help of course. If not, there's now at least one ready-made replacement for the role of head coach operating in the coaching set-up, and i'd be surprised if McNulty isn't fully aware of that

Complete guesswork on my behalf, but I would imagine it was a combination of Taylor and Done being ex-team-mates of McNulty (at Dale & Stockport), Done being best pals with our most senior and respected player in Henderson, Lillis being an ex-team-mate of Done, and Lillis and Taylor both having worked together on Barrow's coaching staff.

I would also imagine McNulty knew that Gibbins was off to Cardiff well before it was announced publicly and made it known to club hierarchy at that time that he needed some new staff and Done and Taylor were among the names he had heard/investigated as possibles. As ex-players of some repute, in addition to the factors above, they were a good fit.

Or something like that.

Gibbins taking a hike to Cardiff probably freed up up enough dosh to employ both Done and Taylor. Having some new voices on the training ground is probably a good thing, no pre-concieved opinions, no axe to grind and everyone with a clean sheet and a new chance to impress....

It's good to see agreement on that last point. One of the points constantly made whenever dissatisfaction was being expressed about McNulty before now was: who else, then?

If we're performing to the level the investment made in the squad requires, we're all happy bunnies. I'm happy to see potential succession planning in place. McNulty's bigging-up of Cardiff (how many seasons in the Premier League?) as a way of expressing the loss of Gibbins says something about the coaching shake-up that... goes otherwise unsaid

Only a couple of season in the Premier League, they’re traditionally a ‘Division 2’ side though apart from a period in the lower two leagues from mid 80s to early 00s.

Yep, and haven't played below the second tier since 2003.

Agreed. Don’t think it’s anything more or less than that and can only be beneficial.

Firstly, we have won our first two games and I’m in optimistic mood. Just want to say that. It may change if results do, but, right now, things feel good.

Second, I’m surprised at the emphasis being placed on how the two new coaches were appointed, given that McNulty addressed this directly in his interview. He made it clear that he anticipated Gibbins’ departure and had a plan in place — that’s proactive, responsible management. Whether or not every detail was run past the board isn’t really the point. Managers are expected to lead, make key appointments, and shape the environment — it’s part of the job. Full public transparency on internal staffing processes isn’t standard practice, nor is it necessary in my view.

He explicitly said: “And, like others in other positions within my technical staff, I think about solutions and potential if these things should ever arise, and I knew what I wanted this summer.”
That’s not someone reacting on the fly. That’s a manager with a plan.

He also said: “What mattered to me was their understanding – of us, of Rochdale, of what it means to play for this club.”

“I felt it was the right time to bring that alternative perspective in.”

“I thought it was good for us, and I’m really pleased with them both.”

This is clearly his decision, his strategy, and his rationale. He repeatedly uses “I” and “me” — no sign of anyone being imposed on him, no evidence of panic appointments.

The quotes make it clear: these were his decisions, aligned with his thinking, for the benefit of the club.

On the Cardiff comment, McNulty referring to them as a "Premier League club in stature" may have been enthusiastic language, but it’s pretty clear what he meant. He was talking about the scale and quality of their infrastructure.

Cardiff’s facilities and resources are well above the level they’re currently playing at. From a professional point of view, it’s understandable why someone would make that move, and McNulty was simply acknowledging that. It wasn’t a case of confusing their league status — it was a comment on the scale of the club off the pitch.

Roll on Saturday.

I don’t think it’s about me being right, because I’m not offering anything that can be disputed, only examples of what has happened over time. It’s incredibly repetitive to keep providing the examples of how he, and the rest of the team, learnt lessons over the season. The improvement in how we became more effective attacking, scoring goals and winning games are there though. You mentioned a winning mentality and Altrincham and Gateshead, the facts are we had a winning mentality against both last season.

His obvious shortcomings in the big games were acknowledged by more or less everyone - at least on here they were. As was the issue about how we started games, which we improved upon… but are we expecting that to be perfect every week?

Ironically one of the most entertaining and positive starts to a game, came in the last one of the season. One where McNulty made obvious errors with substitutions and tactics - again done to death by us all.

There’s nothing new about any of these discussions. The only change is how we’ve improved and where we continue to need to improve. Something pointed out by the managerial team as recently as yesterday.

He didnt learn lessons over the season though. The last game of the season told us that. You might get fed up of repeating it but thats because people like me dont agree with you. The manager was consistent with his poor in game decisions throughout the season, his substitutions in particular which cost us a FA Cup tie, numerous league points and a play off game. The ludicrous goal keeping situation cost us a cup final at Wembley and also proved costly in other big games, five goalkeepers and he's still not learned the lesson as we embalk on this season. I hope whatmuff smashes it but its yet again another young loan keeper with no experience at this level, a contradiction from a manager who cited a lack of experience as our undoing last season. Thats in the fitz interview the one that keeps being referred to in order to support the manager.

I said it was incredibly repetitive providing examples of how the manager and the team did learn and improve, not that I was fed up doing so. It’s probably some get fed up reading them stated time and again, I’m not sure because I don’t assume.

I don’t mind if people don’t agree with me, because if they do or don’t it will only be because they do or don’t recognise the evidence presented. See the points about Altrincham and Gateshead when they had been brought up alongside going out to win games.

The shortcomings about his in game decision making, in particular in some of the big games were recognised and acknowledged by myself and pretty much everyone. That’s not even up for debate.

The manager himself acknowledged the goalkeeping situation and I too share concerns about the lack of experience (again, have already stated this but will do so again). But from what I’ve seen so far Whatmuff looks to be a good keeper, age not withstanding.

Not sure anyone is using Fitzo’s interview to “support the manager”, more as a useful resource which has detailed information.

Surely we all want to support the manager at this stage?!

Re: Cardiff... "gargantuan" - well, i know equivalent clubs such as Leicester or Nottm Forest in terms of infrastructure are pretty huge compared to Dale, but he's pretty good at over-egging the pudding and not sure why

No-one's questioning the value of the interview, which goes far beyond anything club employees are able to put to him during pre- post-match interviews, but we don't have to take it like a "Moses coming down from the mountain with his tablets of stone" either

Yep, roll on Saturday, because football matches are what he'll be judged on, just as he always has been

Well we dont want to see a change of manager after he's brought eleven new signings in over the season, that wouldn't be good, so of course i support him. I do have my doubts about him though, i think he over complicates the game against poor opposition who are there for the taking and i sometimes watch us and wonder what the hell we are trying to achieve. I'm worried about how he is going to utilise this squad of players, will it lead to too much tampering and confusion? Will he change from his cautious approach in respect of his substititions, he needs to do. Can he inject consistent tempo into our performances, i hope so. I just think the Altrincham and Gateshead fixtures are ideal for putting down a marker for the rest of the season, fast attacking football with two of the best forwards in the league. We can't see some of the football we had to endure last season, that first half against Spennmoor was abysmal in such a important game, those floating fans couldnt believe what they were watching. It was embarrassing. There's no excuse for that now and we all know how good these players can be. Edit..Sorry 442, this was in response to your last post.

Apparently (according to someone sat nearby,) Micky Mellon was watching the game on Wednesday......wonder if McNulty managed to ask him what the secret sauce is when it comes to play offs? And why was he there? Looking for loans from Burnley or checking out one of our players ? Or maybe his Scottish upbringing meant he couldnt pass up on a free match?
