The event was also used as a great marketing tool by our club. It brought new blood into the ground, especially the young blood. The very young supporters had their own section so they could sing away every time they were woken up by a player coming near them. We often preach to the converted but this was a real chance to recruit.

It was the first time I heard new voice on the tannoy. Whoever he was came over in an extremely professional manner, directing us to the QR code on the scoreboard in order to vote for the man of the match. He also relayed marketing information in a clear, concise way, for example telling us that the shop was open for a few minutes after the match and even telling us where the shop was located. Very simple but effective addition to our marketing tools...we are moving in the right direction methinks.

The usual tannoyman is on holiday.

The acid test about clarity comes when there are 3000 noisy fans in the ground.

Great point about the tannoy man, he was a breath of fresh air and very professional. I sampled the food up in the 1907 lounge supplied by Scratch that was good also. The £5 wristband wasnt operating due to it being a low key fixture. The Club made a real effort yesterday with live entertainment and a BBQ on the car park, bouncy inflatables, face painting and giving kids free balloons as they left the ground. The weather helped obviously but there was definitely a feel good factor around the ground. I've never seen as many young families at a Dale match. A crowd of 1500 when normally that fixture would have attracted probably 400 for a normal evening fixture. Further initiatives like this during the season, coupled with some exciting football on the pitch should start to increase season ticket sales next season and in turn our attendances.

Seemed like there were lots of grandparents with their grandkids there taking advantage of a free afternoon and loads of kids in dale kits..Other than cost, its hard to see how lots of those youngsters will not become lifelong fans going forwards. Well done Dale...a quantum improvement in customer relations, good weather, a pleasant atmosphere, a decent game and a win, what more could you ask for?

The onus is now on the players and manager this week to enhance the feel good factor. We have two winnable home fixtures and if we could do that with quick entertaining, attacking football that would be great. We want any new fans to leave the ground thinking that they want to return for more. The league table is important also, let's send out a message of intent and start games on the front foot, see if we can get more 90 minute performances.

This can't be repeated enough - it's the bottom line. All the initiatives in the world will ultimately come to nought if those turning up are presented with long periods of listless football. Kids, especially, become bored, and then a pain for their guardians to manage which will put repeat attendance in the bin

It’s a good job that we’ve experienced plenty of good displays and wins last season, especially in the run in, with an obvious change in effectiveness with additions. That’s been built upon since.

Would we all want that for 90 minutes? Of course, but there’s a realism attached. Taylor’s interview hinted at what more the management want from the players when it comes to speed of attacks and the list of examples of when we do that are there for all to see.

The bigger problem now is the game management when it matters and whether that can be addressed. Because we all saw how a fantastically entertaining game against Southend ended up when some awful subs left us baffled and ultimately beaten.

Speaking of Taylor, and Done, it'd be fascinating at some point to find out the rationale and moves behind the scenes for their recruitment

If it was something JM had sought after his "reflections" upon last season, well done to him; or had those who're backing the club financially reflected upon their experiences and decided fresh thinking was required, without upsetting any applecarts? Could be a combo of both, and hopefully was. In either case, the personnel couldn't have been more attuned to the task in hand

By coincidence, Flicker being the guest speaker on Saturday is perfectly timed, with his description of how he and Hill had the footballing time of their lives in the early days, old attitudes and orthodoxies thrown aside with the sheer joy of taking the game to the opposition

Be interesting to see if he reflects on the change in tactical approach once we reached L1.

You can bet he won’t be mentioning his time at Bury much.

Indeed

They tried to do something similar in their early days in the Championship at Barnsley. When the partnership was split, they both lost something

So the manager needs to improve? I've said it before, mindsets need to change and with Taylor and Done now in the dugout i hope that they have. The key question for me against both Altrincham and Gateshead is whether McNulty's full focus is on winning the game or not losing it. You can normally tell after the first fifteen minutes by the tempo of the game. I don't have any concerns about whether our players are good enough or not, they totally are. Both Altrincham and Gateshead have lost their best players. Altrincham also have injuries in the centre of defence and have brought in Sissi to help. We should be ragging both opponents all over the pitch from the start but i suspect it will be turned into some sort of tactical arm wrestle just for the sake of it and we show them too much respect. I hope i'm wrong, let's see.

Don’t do friendlies so today was my first visit to Spotland since the Southend playoff games.
And I was impressed. No problem with online ticketing or accessing the stadium. Stewards all seemed good lads and more interested than the Taurus lot ever were.
And credit to those people who were painting over the summer. The Sandy looked spicy and span.
Watching from behind the dugout it was interesting to see that Doney seemed never to be off his phone in the first half, constantly relaying messages to BJ presumably coming from the Willbutts gantry.
I know that EEL walked over there before the kickoff (although I don’t know how much input he might have) and Jason Taylor was presumably up there.
In the second half he looked to be in the dugout and Doney disappeared so did they swap roles during the break?
As for the game itself….did anyone else think that Burnley’s kickoff routine was different. Their bloke just wellied it out of play.
I was impressed with Moss and also with Tutonda who settled down after a shaky start. And the latter provided a peach of a cross for the second goal.
Pettit is a neat footballer and also looks a natural leader. Could be a genuine alternative to East.
Berger seemed to inject a bit more pace after his introduction.
As for Myles he looked solid enough and can certainly kick a ball. Too far on occasions as when he took the route one option it was sailing over Amantchi’s head. I was wasn’t too sure about his command of the box when Burnley put some some teasing corners across late on.
All in all a good workout and lots of game time for those need it.
How BJ keeps all these squad men happy is a difficult poser but a nice one to have.

Tbf, McNulty's comments on Taylor and Done don't give any indication of the process of how they were recruited, i.e. did he go to the Ogdens to explore the recruitment, was it as a result of a conversation begun by the Ogdens, factoring in the departure of Gibbins (whilst calling Cardiff a "gargantuan" club who're playing at a level below their status...!)

He tells Fitzo he's happy with the value they'll add to managing the team and the squad, but that's not what i was asking

Good to hear..

It has to be at an appropriate time though NOT when the game is in progress that's just annoying..

Another added bonus would be no BING BONGS on Saturday as well.

We are heading in a good direction agreed.

Initially seemed a bit off the pace and his touch wasn't what he would have wanted, but he got better once he had grown into the match a bit.... I thought he was getting into some interesting positions and was playing some balls that will eventually be exceptional when those around him realise they can make runs that he will see and pass into... there was something of the Frank Worthington about him.....I await his full fitness with bated breath......

Don’t know anyone who thinks the manager doesn’t have to improve. He’s probably aware of this himself, but I don’t like guessing at what people might think. I believe it’s best to go off actual evidence - see Fitzo’s interview.

Like the evidence that in five games against Altrincham and Gateshead last season we won them all, indicating that he sent his team out to win them. So there’s no reason to believe anything will change this time around. Especially with the continued progression in how we play.

Well let's hope you're right but until we see evidence that he's learned lessons from last season i'll remain sceptical. I thought he was the weakest link last season when it came to the big games and the way he talked up the opposition was a real negative and sent out the wrong message. That's what i mean about a different mindset being required. I also think we started too many games slowly last season, we werent great in the first half last week neither if the truth be told. We dont want it to be like last season we want to see improvement in performances both on and off the pitch. Its the only way we will get back into the EFL.

I don’t think it’s about me being right, because I’m not offering anything that can be disputed, only examples of what has happened over time. It’s incredibly repetitive to keep providing the examples of how he, and the rest of the team, learnt lessons over the season. The improvement in how we became more effective attacking, scoring goals and winning games are there though. You mentioned a winning mentality and Altrincham and Gateshead, the facts are we had a winning mentality against both last season.

His obvious shortcomings in the big games were acknowledged by more or less everyone - at least on here they were. As was the issue about how we started games, which we improved upon… but are we expecting that to be perfect every week?

Ironically one of the most entertaining and positive starts to a game, came in the last one of the season. One where McNulty made obvious errors with substitutions and tactics - again done to death by us all.

There’s nothing new about any of these discussions. The only change is how we’ve improved and where we continue to need to improve. Something pointed out by the managerial team as recently as yesterday.

But your earlier deflection missed the point i was making. Perhaps i didn't make it clearly enough, so i'll have another try:

It matters whether JM initiated the introduction of Taylor and Done to the coaching setup, or whether this was instigated by others at the club

This isn't addressed in the Fitzo interview (which is no reflection on the high quality of the interview)

Why does it matter? Well, the club needed to replace Gibbins, and bringing in Taylor and Done certainly strengthens the coaching setup and McNulty seems to welcome it

Being respected former players, if they perceive shortfalls in McNulty's approach, their ideas could potentially undermine his own. Taylor in particular doesn't appear to be anyone's "Yes man". If they're handpicked by McNulty, he can own that, but if not and they were headhunted by others within the setup, there's potential for disagreement. Now that can be healthy, depending on receptivity but McNulty goes out of his way to emphasise his core philosophy

I really hope it all works well and we see the necessary improvements. bringing in better players and a larger squad will help of course. If not, there's now at least one ready-made replacement for the role of head coach operating in the coaching set-up, and i'd be surprised if McNulty isn't fully aware of that

Sorry, no deflection intended wherever that was.

I didn’t offer an opinion on how any of the coaching staff were appointed because it’s not something I’ve really thought about one way or another. Appreciate others may be more interested. I do believe having new voices and ideas was a good move though.

One thing it does do though is actually increase pressure on McNulty because there are now obvious in-house candidates for a future managerial vacancy.

It's good to see agreement on that last point. One of the points constantly made whenever dissatisfaction was being expressed about McNulty before now was: who else, then?

If we're performing to the level the investment made in the squad requires, we're all happy bunnies. I'm happy to see potential succession planning in place. McNulty's bigging-up of Cardiff (how many seasons in the Premier League?) as a way of expressing the loss of Gibbins says something about the coaching shake-up that... goes otherwise unsaid
