Under 21s at Truro 07:11 - Aug 14 with 808 views | SalisburySaint | Made the trip down to Cornwall yesterday to watch the National League Cup game For me it fulfilled my aim to get on train down to Penzance, the mostly southerly point after previously getting to Thurso the most northerly point of UK rail network, whilst also ticking off another new ground. Saints lost 3-2 to an 85th minute goal, but played pretty well, passing the ball around nicely, but they wasted several opportunities, particularly when the wide men got behind the defence but their final balls into the centre were often poor with plenty of players ready to finish off the move. Had little idea last night who was playing for us, but was impressed with our nos 8 and 15. On checking this morning 8 was Sesay, who played in several preseason first team games, 15 was Dipepa, who held up the ball really well up front. Bragg who played for first team last year, Ballard off the bench and Moody a keeper who was on the bench at Northampton also featured Good to see at least 50 other Saints fans in the crowd of 1906 A decent game, and with a 7pm kick off, back in the pub in Truro in time to watch Spurs chuckle away 2-0 leads in both match and penalties to round off a good day out

Got to be the most picturesque setting I've seen for a football ground. I thought we were fortunate with our equaliser. Our man seemed to clear out everybody around him, our players included. Their winner by contrast was a delightful flick. We had a kid on the left who was exceptionally quick, and had the beating of the fullback every time. Truro didn't take any prisoners and the tackles were shall we say meaty. Considering our kids were up against grown men, i thought they did ok. I did think the locals singing "You dirty northern bastards" amusing.

I'm guessing that must be their signature ditty to sing at every game!

This brings back a few memories of a couple of holidays in Cornwall when pre-season friendliest were in full swing. I remember seeing Mousehole play a Man Utd XI when we were down there one year. Best of all was summer 1991 when Saints went on a West Country tour playing Exeter City, Torpoint Athletic, Plymouth Argyle & Bodmin Town. Saints played pretty much a first team even against the two non-League sides which caused a lot of excitement seeing the likes of Le Tiss & Shearer up close. Shearer scored a hat trick against Bodmin in a 5-0 win - that whole evening was brilliant, at the time Bodmin had a grass bank (Henman Hill style) behind one goal and loads of footie fans on holiday turned up, lots in their replica shirts. They were all sat on the grass bank together with dozens of different clubs represented. Not a sniff of trouble, everyone was just in a holiday mood and enjoying some football on a nice summer evening. Afterwards we were lucky to get into the post match barbecue outside their clubhouse and had a superb evening with the local Bodmin fans and a selection of random supporters of other clubs. The banter was top class. Stayed in Mevagissey as a base to travel to the games after the Exeter game then a few more days in Polperro. Wish Saints would do that again one pre-season as it was thoroughly enjoyable.
