Great report
Highlights totally unacceptable performance by Cullen at that free kick

Vipotnik has a lot of critics but I think if he had as much game time as Cullen has been afforded he would be a lot sharper and may well have one us the game today

The ref was weak, after two or three play acting in quick succession he should have immediately called on the physio for the next one and then made them play with 10 until he signalled on the offender. Do that a couple of times and they'll stop playing acting.

Josh Key gave away the foul which lead to the goal. We were trying to appeal for a foul against Franco moments before.

But he has had alot of gametime last season and in pre season.

Let's hope whatever has gone on in midweek will spur him on.

It's been inconsistent though Firey. That's the point. He's been in and out of the team. He's come on as sub and done well, yet found himself on the bench the next game. Started and done OK, and then dropped the next.

If he'd had as much consistent game time as Cullen has had and been as poor as people think then maybe he'd be worth the criticism he takes. He's been no worse at 9 than Cullen ever has and is often better, yet back to the bench he goes all the time.

All strikers thrive on confidence. If he can't be confident of retaining his place in the side when he plays well, or even getting off the bench when the alternative is having a stinker (as Cullen has every game so far) then what good is that going to do him?

IF he's still at the club and we haven't signed anyone else in the meantime then he needs to be starting in Sheffield. If he's not then we know the team isn't being picked on performance.

Statistics don't lie. Vip had 2,090 minutes in 42 league games played last season, with an average of nearly 50 min per game. He scored 7 league goals, for an average of 1 goal per 298+ min played.

By comparison, Cullen had 11 league goals in 3,011 minutes & 42 league games played for an average of a goal for every 273+ min played.

How many goals did Cullen score when he was playing as a striker?

That only tells half the story.

Vipotnik brought very little outside of his seven goals. No assists, very few chances created. Rarely dragged defenders out of position.

He was a good outlet when we were clearing, pressed hard and the goals he did score were usually important ones (but then I’d guess most of Cullens were too, as we rarely won by more than a single goal).

If you’re looking at goals per minute, it looks poor. If you’re looking at overall contribution, it looks worse.

Exactly.

This is what the debate is about. Which one of them is currently our better option up front. Vipotnik scores more goals from that position than Cullen does. Had he played every game upfront instead of Cullen I'd wager it would have been quite a few more.

If we were discussing which one of them was a better #10 then the answer would be Cullen.

If you’re talking a respectable number of goals, then that’s fair enough. If you’re talking seven over a season, then overall contribution has to come into play. He brings very little else.

We’re carrying either one of them in that position.

Given what we've seen in the first 3 games Vip should start rather than Cullen against Shef Wednesday.
Hopefully we'll sign a decent forward this week though

The last sentence is where it’s at. Barring a dramatic improvement from Vip, neither of them will have a lot of impact.

I expect Vipotnik to start against Plymouth, how he plays then will decide if he starts next Saturday. If he's still here.

Your last sentence is spot on.

Atm sheehan sees that cullen is a better no9 than vip.

If both were on the field together it would mean us being weaker as one of our good midfielders wouldn't.

Agreed about the Plymouth game but unless we bring 2 strikers in (which seems unlikely) I don't think we can afford to let him go - limited though he is

You obviously didnt watch us against boro, cullen was far better at linking up with the midfield in the first half, we went downhill big style when they scored and especially when vip came on, I am certain that he didnt touch the ball more than 3 times in 30 minutes.

But I think he will start on Saturday as he did alot better than usual in over 20 minutes yesterday.

What if we get just one striker, vip stays and he has a tantrum again? We are stuck with him.

Vip seems like a good bloke, there have been no rumours of him bring a problem until this week.

I hope this episode will have sorted him out.

I did see the whole of the Boro game & we created virtually nothing with either of them on the pitch but thankfully we've got a better midfield now & we won't see Fulton starting again.
Vip scored a good goal yesterday, whether it's because he's annoyed about being left out or not i don't care as long as it results in a better performance from him.
If we sign another striker & he's still here when the window closes then he'll have to knuckle down & get on with it because he can't go anywhere until January.

My hope is that Sheehan will start Wales up top, Inoussa & Ronald out wide, Stamenic, Franco & Widell in the middle, along with Galbraith as the right FB & Tymon as the left FB with Burgess & Cabango as CB's. Would like to see Vigo in goal but because it's a League Cup game, we'll probably see Fisher. Bring in S. Parker @ the 60' mark for Franco & move Galbraith to the middle (or, bring in Yalcouye for Galbraith to play as a holding/def middie), and allow Parker to get some minutes as the right FB.

Eventually, Sheehan will have to settle on a starting eleven as there are a couple of spots that are up for grabs. There's also a lot of high quality midfielders to be able to properly rotate.

I would also like to see Swans try playing two up top, Wales/Inoussa and Vip, to see if that tactic works. Great column by JackArmy.net that has an interesting point regarding Vip: Žan Vipotnik and the Philosophy Question: A Striker Caught Between Systems - https://jackarmy.net/2025/08/23/zan-vipotnik-and-the-philosophy-question-a-strik

For Plymouth I expect more or less the same starting 11 as we had against Crawley but with Stamenic instead of Cooper.

Fisher
Parker Casey Burgess Tymon
Galbraith Stamenic Widell
Ronald Vipotnik Inoussa

We’ve got to start Vipotnik in that game. Unless there’s anything happening transfer wise.

The two up top thing is where Cullen works, probably better than #10, but that may well be the case for Wales as well. I can’t see it, as we’d either have to sacrifice width or control of the middle.

As much as I criticise Vipotnik, I will completely agree he’s better suited to other formations.
