Notting Hill carnival on 10:26 - Aug 26 with 1331 views | Whiterockin | Glastonbury 31 arrests attendance 210,000 one in 6,774. Notting hill 423 arrests attendance 3,000,000 one in 7,092 The results are similar with large gatherings, do you want to ban them all.
Notting Hill carnival on 10:33 - Aug 26 with 1322 views | Demitrius | Sir Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, made no mention of the trouble over the weekend, saying in his only social media post about the carnival: 'The streets were alive with music and joy, showing the best of our city and the power of culture to unite us.' Viral social media footage captured some of the uglier scenes from the first day of the event, known as 'Family Day', as two women brawled in the middle of a packed street, surrounded by horrified onlookers. 423 arrests and 18 for sexual assault which is down on last year I think? This is due to the Police having knife arches, facial recognition for pre-emptive detainment of known criminals etc...I expected the numbers to be much higher and thankfully no murders this year.... For context, to anyone outside the UK reading this, we don't have Knife Arches or stabbings at the Last Night of The Proms, Glyndebourne or The Henley Regatta.....at last not yet ! I get your point and it's a valid one but 3m ? It's usually around 1m average - which is in itself uncomfortably crowded given the area that Carnival occupies. I think there were exceptionally high numbers last year which probably added to the tension and violence. I've seen 1m again quoted for this year but obvs it's hard to gauge exact numbers as it's not a ticketed event. Demetrius (ex-Londoner)

Isn't it the 1M a day as quoted in the press?

I think you at need to break down what the offences were to get a comparison on whether all or none are banned.

There won't be one in 2026 as they have to have fallow years for the farmland to recover from being trampled by hundreds of thousand of pairs of designer wellies. Sadly the gobshite Pippas and Tarquins will find other, smaller, less dick-hd orientated festivals to ruin for other folks - Probably Green Man or End of the Road. Hopefully the IOW one will get the bulk as from what people tell me that's already a close contender with Glasto for being an a-hole magnet...

Notting Hill carnival on 12:04 - Aug 26 with 1096 views | ReslovenSwan1 | Perhaps the racial stresses in the White community has pressurised the mixed communities in London to moderate their behaviour with community leaders making representations to yuff leaders. If there was widespread rioting Farage would go nuts. The English are putting the flags out in national pride while saying there is no effing way my boys is getting conscripted. [Post edited 26 Aug 12:09]

Live facial recognition and stop and search probably had more effect on moderating behaviour.

Banning Notting Hill would see widespread disorder They need their dope and paraphernalia to enjoy the day It’s become horrific and it’s our fault

In the end whenever that is, conscription won’t matter, the only way I see this going is by the rule of law breaking down and people choosing sides or leaving the country.

Notting Hill carnival on 11:34 - Aug 26 by Demitrius | I was always under the impression that was the net attendance but on checking you're right in as far as there is a million there each day. Some will go for 1 day, some 2 and some for all 3 days. I've just looked it up and the consensus seems to be that over the 3 days there are 2 million individual Carnival attendees on average. I went once in the 90s when I was a much younger and more tolerant individual and it was well dodgy even then. I wouldn't be happy about my two teenage daughters going to it - thankfully they seem to have little interest so far. I used to work in that area in a number of different roles, often at weekends and frankly it just becomes a massive pain in the arse because of the sheer numbers, like being the only sober one at a mad piss-up - having said that, I also lived in SW19 and so was Wimbledon each year. I used to book leave and try to get out of the city to avoid both events! [Post edited 26 Aug 11:39]

I also went there back in the 90s, that was my first and last time. I was visiting friends in the south east and they wanted to check it out, I wasn’t keen on going but didn’t have much choice. Place was heaving, lots of people enjoying themselves but I didn’t feel safe. We were standing in on the pavement when this black guy walked past us, he was about 5 8 tall, his shoulders were about 3ft wide, he was V shaped, totally ripped and was holding his hand out offering a tennis ball size piece of resin for sale. He was brazen and didn’t care that there were teams of police about 30 yards away. My mate then decided he wanted to go to a free concert in some park, by now the evening was closing in and the sun wasn’t far off setting. I felt decidedly unsafe and told my mates they could stay, but I was offski. It wasn’t long before they felt the same vibes I was experiencing and we were out of there rapid style. Didn’t see any violence, but I had the feeling it wasn’t far away. Many years later I was talking to an ex Met cop, he hated Notting Hill Carnival and said he’d been assaulted there a fair few times.

You describe my experience of it uncannily well in parallel sentiments.... For me back then London was relatively safe - most of the time - but the NHC was when its unpleasant underbelly came out to play in broad daylight.. What was it Shakespeare said : "Hell is empty and all the demons are here" ? God knows what it's like 30 years on these days, much worse I'd imagine... [Post edited 27 Aug 5:20]
