travel advice for Krakow on 13:30 - Aug 26 with 1285 views | Logman | I went there in April. It's all pretty straightforward in the centre. It's safe, you can find a mixture of eateries (nothing too much international though) and pubs. I went there to visit two 'must see' places - the Salt Mines and Auschwitz. Important advice - if visiting Auschwitz, book /buy tickets in advance somehow. I couldn't get in - it was sold out to school / student groups. The Salt Mines you can visit on the day. I believe there are a couple of other out-of-town trips that you can do - because the town only really has about a day's worth of stuff worth seeing. Hope the above helps [Post edited 26 Aug 13:31]

travel advice for Krakow on 13:32 - Aug 26 with 1275 views | stefan54 | For the first time in a number of years, I was there in June. A beautiful city with lots to do and see. How long are you there for? What do you mean by "usual stuff"/
travel advice for Krakow on 13:46 - Aug 26 with 1223 views | Landshark | Salt mines and Auschwitz are obviously a must. I've been throughout Poland and Krakow is 10/10, you will have a great time. Depending on how long you're there you could try a day trip to Zakopane in the mountains which is a 2 hour drive from Krakow.

I don't agree that there is only a day's worth of sight seeing. In my view the places worth seeing in the city include: (1) Wawel Hill (Castle and Cathedral, which is the coronation and burial site of Polish monarchs and notable Poles, some of whom died abroad and whose remains were reinterred there. (2) Rynek Glówny (Main Market Square). Site of the Sukiennice (a Renaissance-era Cloth Hall) and Kościół Mariacki (St. Mary’s Basilica), a 14th-century Gothic church with towers of different heights. On the hour every hour a trumpet signal is played from the top of the taller of the Basilica’s two towers. The tune breaks off in mid-stream, to commemorate a famous 13th century trumpeter who was shot in the throat while sounding the alarm before a Mongol attack on the city. (3) Schindler’s Factory Museum. That said, I didn't bother to go when I was told that it was not his actual factory. (4) The Jewish Quarter (Kazimierz) - the area of Krakow which was used for the filming of Schindler's List (5) Home Army Museum (6) Czartoryski Museum I totally agree about the need to buy advance tickets for Auschwitz. When i was there some years ago, I just drove to the entrance and walked in. This time, I didn't bother because of the bureaucratic nightmare. A couple in my hotel took the 6am train and waited for hours before they could get in. Hope this is helpful.
travel advice for Krakow on 14:39 - Aug 26 with 1057 views | enfieldargh | My new daughter in law is a krakowian Some already mentioned Wawel Castle + take a walk along Wisła river via Forum przestrzenie (where is a great food market, restaurants and a beautiful view) you can go from there to Jewish quarter (Kazimierz) Kazimierz Area: • Synagogues • Jewish cementery • Lots of great Jewish restaurants on Szeroka street • Father Bernatek’s Bridge (Kładka Ojca Bernatka) connects Kazimierz with Podgórze where you can go to some nice restaurants for dinner :) Schindler’s Factory (zabłocie) - Jewish history museum, would recommend to take a Uber/bolt there Salt mine - it’s at the outskirts of Krakow in Wieliczka you can take a train there from Dworzec Główny Main Square: Traditional Polish Bars/Cafes • Prowincja • Zaułek św. Tomasza (Main Square) - for a coffee/drink

travel advice for Krakow on 14:50 - Aug 26 with 1022 views | Jeff | for the avoidance of doubt, if you do Auschwitz (and you really, really should...) do not plan anything big or happy or 'fun' for afterwards. unless you're a complete sociopath, the Auschwitz experience will leave you so emotionally drained that there's zero prospect of going clubbing or a slap up meal afterwards...

travel advice for Krakow on 15:24 - Aug 26 with 940 views | Pindarus | Allow all day to visit Auschwitz and travel there independently by train. Prepare to be overwhelmed, it is an unbelievable experience. Krakow is a historic and beautiful city with much to see and all contained within a walkable centre. Plentiful restaurants at reasonable prices and interesting menus. [Post edited 26 Aug 15:26]

travel advice for Krakow on 15:27 - Aug 26 with 924 views | BazzaInTheLoft | There are some bits of Auschwitz closed off at the moment for refurbishment so double check before you go and avoid political symbols etc as 180 people were thrown out recently for displaying them.
travel advice for Krakow on 16:32 - Aug 26 with 810 views | Orthodox_Hoop | Town square is bit of a tourist trap which is no surprise. As others have said, Salt Mines and Auschwitz a must - but you can spend loads of time just walking around the place exploring. Found a delightful proper Polish restaurant that was reasonably priced and recommended to me by the locals called U Babci Maliny (At Grandma Raspberry's) - tucked away in a basement. When you step in it's like you've taken a time machine back into rural Poland. The food was amazing and the staff friendly, although they only spoke Polish so initially thought we were tourists who were lost.

Completely agree with this. It really is an incredibly emotionally difficult place to visit. I would book tickets in advance and do the trip on your last day. It really does stay with you - as it should. We did a private driver which worked well for our group. A great city for mooching around and having a pint.

travel advice for Krakow on 20:53 - Aug 26 with 556 views | Dorse | Kazimierz District (Jewish quarter) is lovely. The little square on Szeroka (off Miodowa) next to the Remuh synagogue has some great places to eat. My favourite is Chayim Kohan - very small, home-cooked kosher menu. Fcuking mint. Try the raspberry and honey beer. Just across the square, the Rubinstein has a rooftop bar - nice views. Awiw serves great cholent: my daughter called it life-changing. Never one for understatement, that child. The whole Kazimierz area is buzzing, especially at the weekend. In the day there are plenty of sites and short Jewish heritage walking tour (free). Remuh is 15 zlotys entry (about 5 zlotys to the £). A couple of streets over is Plac Nowa, street food / market in the day, fine dining and restaurants open in the evening. I fcking love the place.
