For a long time England have been playing too much dull, slow, one dimensional, tippy-tappy football. The same was true against Andorra when we should have been getting the ball wide and bombarding them with crosses. That's where the space was. We did it a few times, but not enough.
So, it was interesting to read Tuchel's words today when he said:
"I tell you, the long throw-in is back... once we arrive at the World Cup, all these things matter, so we will also talk about long throw-ins, we will talk about long kicks from the goalkeeper and not only playing short... all these patterns are back, and crosses are back as well."
Sounds like he wants England to mix it up and play direct sometimes. Good. There's been far too much snobbery in football since Pep emerged, where if you go direct, the keeper kicks it long or you take long throw-ins then you are not playing "football". Southgate fell for all of this and unfortunately for us, Rusty was the ultimate sucker for it.
Now it seems that the tide is turning in football fashions, not just from Tuchel's comments but from others too. I think it's about time. There isn't just one way to play the game.
Hopefully this is what we see from WS's Saints too. We can't always rely on worldie free kicks. By adding players like Fellows and Azaz we add different ways of creating chances. Ideally we'd have a proper centre forward who can get on the end of these chances too, but even if we don't, just by getting good deliveries into the box more, we should score more goals. Perhaps it won't always be as pretty as the idealists would want, but I don't care about that. |  | | |  |

I watched the highlights of Pompey v Saints from the late 80s on Facebook...the style of footy looked alien to me from the 2025 perspective, long ball up to the edge of the box mostly.

One of the problems with England playing high-tempo stuff is that the Finals or tournaments are often played in stupid heat.
Next year in US / Mexico / Canada could be the same.
The next Euros over here could be our big chance. Though we will need to have properly replaced Kane by then. |  |
