The Trump visit - opinions 08:54 - Sep 18 with 996 viewssaint901

The media is full of pictures of the orange baby and his plastic wife being fawned over by the British establishment.

I absolutely understand that being on the "right side" of the capricious bullying hypocrite and convicted felon is seen as "necessary" for any number of political or economic reasons but frankly it makes me sick to my soul embarrassed that we have been so reduced.

You?

He will run rings round Starmer today behind closed doors, and then we will be back as you were, with peace in Ukraine and the Middle East no nearer.

I agree that it is sickening but given how much we rely on the US financially and for security we have no choice but to suck up to him as long as he is in power. I saw an American today call Starmer the “Trump Whisperer.” No matter what you think of Starmer as PM so far, he has played a blinder with Trump so far. The sucking up has gone to another level with the second state visit, but if the country benefits from better deals with this idiot then it will have been worth it.

Blair did it, and other politicians. You have to be on the right side of the American president. Being America's "special friend" is the best way to be in my opinion. If we can get a great deal, from America giving us billions, for a bit of pomp and ceremony, so be it.

He has been elected as the president of the USA. The world has to work with him whether we like it or not. Those protesting about the visit, (entitled to do so) but what do they want? Massive tariffs and our country being poorer if we decided to ignore such a powerful man?

And Trump does it too with Putin and the N Korea dictator etc. Keep your enemies closer...

On this, Starmer has got it right with his approach. On pretty much everything else, he has got it wrong.

If we were still part of the EU sucking up to Trump wouldn’t be so important. However, we are now on our own and have to blow smoke up this bloke’s arse in order to make up for the business that we have lost since we got our country back.

Although many European leaders are sucking up to him too. And riots in France, doesn't necessarily tell me that being in the EU is much better.

That would be the EU leaders sucking up to Putin and staying silent about the situation in Gaza?

Personally I'd rather not have a dies in the wool fascist in Hungary claim to be acting on my behalf.

To be honest, watching the news tonight with France on fire with terrible protests because they are more skint than we are, and they are in Europe, I don't see the argument of being Europe as the solution to all our problems.
