Perimeter Walls Around Pitches - Tragic Death of a Player 12:00 - Sep 26 with 2066 viewsPlanetHonneywood

Not sure if this has been posted before, but what an absolute tragedy occurred after a player (Billy Vigar) has died following a significant brain injury after he collided with a brick wall perimeter around the pitch. Apparently, another non-league player sustained a career-ending injury after colliding with a wall last season and injuries are not uncommon from such collisions.

Not sure what we currently do on the walls around the pitch at LR. I have a mate whose ST is first row in the ER stand and I last sat there last season and there was no padding as I recall.

Anyway, a poor lad of 21 lost his life playing footy. Very, very sad.

Saw that story the other week and it's terrible news. Apparently he went over and skidded on the grass before colliding with the concrete. You see players go over hoardings and it always looks amusing until you realise something like this can happen.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end

I’m always puzzled, largely with the newer grounds, that they build a slope off the pitch which seems to be there to propel any on running player straight into the billboards. Dare say it’s a drainage thing but seems pretty dangerous to me.

Its an awful accident and hopefully will spark a bit more risk assessment and increased safety measures in place at all levels of the game. Very sad, RIP Billy

I'm an occasional visitor to Wingate and I did grimace when players went hurtling towards those walls.

Current league rules doesn't outlaw grounds having them, but you expect that will now change. Wingate's home match tomorrow has now been postponed.

Such a tragic waste of life. RIP.

I'll never forget the noise Barbets head made colliding with the barrier at home against WBA, after a challenge a 4 or 5 years ago.
Daryl Dike I think it was.

i wonder what the HSE will make of this, a totally unforeseen accident is not the same as an accident waiting to happen

Sounds like a tragic incident and you call it correctly, "an accident waiting to happen"

i tell you another accident waiting to happen and t20 and hundred cricket fans be well aware of this one too. Some of these players connect with immense power and the ball when hit at a low horizontal trajectory at pace, could clean out an unsuspecting fan. A game was delayed this season by such an incident but one day, i sadly predict this will also inevitably by laws of probability fatally injure a fan and its easy to lose vision of the ball when hit so ferociously.

The other new "safety innovation" that am shocked has still been in operation despite many tragedies is the so called smart motorway, which for me is downright not smart, in fact balatantly idiotic, more like. Yet still nothing is done.

So sad and so unnecessary all.

RIP Billy

Let's not forget in most cases it's only commercial reasons for keeping them there.

Speedway now has air fences to avoid serious contact with the wall , there must be a way to integrate those with the LED boards

It'll never happen, but I wouldn't miss those LCD boards.

On the face of it, the football problem seems such a simple one to overcome.

Even at grounds like ours where space is tight some low wire mesh fencing - a short distance in front of the existing walls and about the same height - would surely go some way to preventing the most serious injuries. This would cost next to nothing.

I wasn’t even aware of air fencing until you mentioned it. A great idea, although it does seem to take up a fair bit of space – but of course it’s specifically designed for protecting riders when motorbikes crash into walls.

I am very surprised how few injuries to spectators at T20 and Hundred games given the high volume of sixes.
I remember seeing Alan Border hit a six a few years back which smacked into the face of a female spectator who was asleep. Fortunately she suffered no long term damage.
As far as football grounds are concerned, in some like ours which are tight for space there should be no concrete or brick or metal obstructions within say 2 metres of the pitch. I imagine legislation will follow.
