One of The Monster Raving Looney Party’s flagship policies at the last election was to put doctors receptionists in charge of border control. No bugger would get in.

New guidelines for NHS Doctors on 13:26 - Oct 1 with 272 views | Boundy | My surgery seems to have already adopted something similar, phone at anytime during the day and dependant on the emergency you'll get a call back ,sometime in the future, far far away.

New guidelines for NHS Doctors on 16:35 - Oct 1 with 197 views | Dr_Winston | I tend to use the AskmyGP service at my surgery on the rare occasions that I need to speak to them. Works fairly well but again is only open for a certain period.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

Yes, my surgery uses AskmyGP, it's moved the scramble from the phone to online.

New guidelines for NHS Doctors on 17:31 - Oct 1 with 145 views | SullutaCreturned | You can do it online now, our surgery has been doing it for at least a year BUT you have the problem that you can't book an appointment. You send your stuff in and the GP reviews it, if they feel you need an appointment they contact you otherwise they will phone you but you don't know when. Last time I waited for a call back I waited all day, at 17.45 I had given up but then she rang. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
New guidelines for NHS Doctors on 17:58 - Oct 1 with 133 views | swan_si | Brynhyfryd medical centre have been using an online system for a good while now. It states it's available from 7.30 until 3.00 but it's a reduced capacity and in reality is only available until 8.30 - 9.00.
New guidelines for NHS Doctors on 18:45 - Oct 1 with 101 views | AnotherJohn | I'm another whose GP has used the AskMyGP app for quite some time. The problem is that on some days the window after it comes online at I think 8.00am can be as short as 10 minutes before all the available consultation slots fill up. To be fair, you can get around this by typing up your problem and dropping a note off at the surgery reception, in which case they will usually submit your request for the next day. Another route to getting seen that has come to my attention is that if you visit a pharmacist under the Common Ailments Scheme, and they think you need an urgent consultation, they can fill in a form for you to take to your GP surgery, which will lead to you getting an early consultation.
New guidelines for NHS Doctors on 18:48 - Oct 1 with 99 views | majorraglan | The system for booking appointments varies from surgery to surgery, some have the online portal and others don’t. A lot of the GP practices are private companies or partnerships that are contracted to provide the service and outside the direct control of the Health Boards.

The bit at the end of Major's post describes the general pattern. As part of Nye Bevan’s attempt to bring doctors on board when the NHS was established, GPs were allowed to remain as independent contractors rather than direct employees of the NHS. Today, GP practices almost all operate as small businesses with partners, plus some salaried GPs paid by the practice and locum GPs contracted to undertake specified sessions. Remuneration depends mainly on GMS contracts, with additional payments for meeting certain targets. Here is a breakdown for Wales. https://www.gov.wales/general-practice-workforce-30-september-2022-html The situation in England is similar – with the main difference being the detail of contractual arrangements between GPs and English Integrated Care Boards compared with Welsh Health Boards (as well as GMS contracts England uses many PMS contracts). https://www.kingsfund.org.uk/insight-and-analysis/long-reads/gp-funding-and-cont
