| Top 3 Hidden Gem Cities 11:29 - Oct 7 with 6724 views | SaintNick | Forget the obvious destinations such as New York, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Prague, Amsterdam, Barcelona etc, all places I have been and liked (Well not Paris) where have you been that not many chose to visit 1. Chicago- My favourite city in America, much better than New York it is sport and music crazy and has some real iconic buildings as well. 2. Shanghai- A city of two halves one part Chinese and the other like New York, again a great City to wander around and take in the different vibes 3. Hamburg- Like Chicago gritty and they like a bit of football and music | |

So many I really like but for me one of the best so far was Saigon (HCMCity) although I have not been there for over 20 years now, though I am told by people who have been recently that it is still superb. Some great architecture there. Nicosia also has something about it, not least some amazing food. There is nothing quite like a Meze. Great atmosphere also as you can always seem to find a wedding party that is open to all with the plate smashing etc. I am also a big fan of Kuala Lumpur, again as it has some districts within the city with some very different architecture. Lovely parks by the Petronas towers also and some great India food. Honorable mentions to Manama in Bahrain, some great nightlife there. Stockholm, although I hear now it has gone downhill fast in recent years. Hong Kong for sure, though perhaps a bit mainstream for a hidden gem.

| Top 3 Hidden Gem Cities on 21:07 - Oct 7 by TripleNiemi | Can I politely ask when you last were in New York and San Fran? Whilst the smell of the green is evident in NYC, San Fran was the worst place I have visited in recent years (2023) for the stench of weed. Not sure if it got worst since Covid, big the place stank and people everywhere were walking round like zombies. New York was nowhere near as bad imho |
Avoid San Francisco, the place is flooded with fentanyl and the streets are lined with zombies. Such a shame as it what my favourite US city

| Top 3 Hidden Gem Cities on 11:20 - Oct 8 by GRIM | I'm surprised no one has mentioned our great City. SOUTHAMPTON. There's worse places to live. Let's get behind our City & our Team. |
As , one assumes, you live in Southampton, it may be a gem but it’s not exactly hidden. Unless, of course, we include gems hidden in plain sight!?

| Top 3 Hidden Gem Cities on 13:34 - Oct 8 by PaleRider | I used to live just outside of Portsmouth New Hampshire and the state itself was a wonderful place to live. I'm not a fan of many US cities - one because I find them a bit samey and two because they are becoming increasingly expensive! I'm surprised no one has mentioned any of the Scandinavian or Baltic state cities as they are great. I do agree that Valetta is wonderful and I have a soft spot for most German cities, having lived in Germany as well. I'll throw in: 1) Belgrade - fun city, increasingly cosmopolitan and people speak great English. The food and drink are brilliant. Of course, they have a football rivalry to match Saints/skates as well! 2) Ashgabat - the weirdest city I have ever been to. A white marble city in the desert some 30 miles from Iran, where all the cars are white and clean (by law!) and every building has some form of symbolism. People are friendly but the city is quiet. 3) Singapore - great architecture and variety of food & drink. Everything works and people speak English! Horrible climate though. |
Been to Portsmouth NH many times. They have a couple of very good breweries there and an open air museum which is basically some of the older houses in the town relocated to a park. Think it's called Strawberry Bank? Also full of sports bars and most weekends the vibe is good if you like sport. (Luckily my wife does). Rural NH is more of an acquired taste. Bear in mind that the state logo is "Live Free or Die", many of those outside the few towns, do live by that credo and don't always take kindly to "incomers".

I think the thread has become less about hidden gems and more about places people liked when they visited them, including some of the most visited cities in the world. Perhaps, 'The 3 cities you liked best' would be a more suitable title. A long-term holiday or travel thread, where people could make recommendations and seek advice, might be useful. I used to be a member of Virtual Tourist, which was the first big travel forum on the internet, but, unfortunately, it got taken over by Expedia, who closed it down, as they saw it as a rival to their Tripadvisor. I lost more than 5,000 travel photos when that happened. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtualtourist [Post edited 9 Oct 22:49]
