New keeper. on 11:12 - Oct 19 by connell10 | I was at the game upper loft I saw the goal and I think Nardi is at fault for it. A goalie for me has to command his box and instill confidence in the rest of the defence. |
Connell you saw a view from behind the goal, which may have looked like Nardi could easily have got to the ball. I was in SA road F block and having watched it numerous times on video, I think the attacker is getting there first and Nardi had to guard against being lobbed. There were many errors and mistakes in the build up and it is a superb ball. The goalie is the last line of defence, IF he takes a bit of the blame, he isn't the main culprit here.

He’s behind you ! Oh no, he isn’t…. Pantomime does somewhat sum the first goal up nicely. Dame Bould, enter stage left.
| Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

New keeper. on 11:22 - Oct 19 by dmm | I've watched back the goals we conceded and think defenders and Nardi share blame for both. There doesn't appear to be a working understanding between outfield players and Nardi on who will claim balls in the box. I would put that firstly down to Nardi who ought to command his penalty area but doesn't. Even so, the defenders still seem to expect that he will, and they clearly shouldn't. |
One thing not said about that goal was how great the pass was by the way.

It's a brilliant pass, but just watched it back (again - what is wrong with me?) and when Mitchell picks the ball up, Madsen, the closest QPR player, is on his heels. Instead of sprinting towards the ball, Madsen runs backwards, vacating space for Mitchell to run into. Very odd. I appreciate it happens quickly, but as the closest CM, his job is to close it down. Mitchell is a v good player, had a decent game yesterday I thought, but shouldn't be given that much time and space to lift his head and pick that pass. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That's a fair point. I also thought Smyth (who I love) needed to do more to block the cross for the second. But it's useful to see the replay a few times for the first. I was harsher on Nardi at the time than I feel now. Yes it would have been great if he'd been able to do more, but RND and Cook looked more at fault by that stage. I do wonder if that goal would've happened if Mbengue was playing. He is fairly mental yes and acknowledges that himself, but I think he's getting a bit more grief now than he should. We knew about the cards and that is certainly coming to pass, but he gives more pace and coverage than we've had for a while. Morrison is excellent but if we're sticking with Cook (which we should), Mbengue beside him makes a lot of sense, I think.

New keeper. on 17:50 - Oct 18 by BrianMcCarthy | I'm undecided. First of all, Smallbone's shot was not postage stamp and it was a long-ranger. I think that's a good save, but one any keeper at our level will make, or should make. Secondly, as for their first goal - I think that his starting point is on the penalty spot and he's very close to where it drops, so it's tempting to wonder why he doesn't clear it...but it is a very hard ball to judge - is it catchable, can he fly-kick it, what if he misses it etc etc. I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt on that one. But, I can see differing points of view, it's fairly subjective. |
I can see why some folk expected Nardi to rush out to claim the pass for the first goal. However, whilst it wasn't on a six pence, it was played into a corridor of uncertainty where the keeper puts himself at huge risk of a red card and/or penalty if he doesn't get to the ball first. I'm more annoyed at the way an experienced pro like Cook momentarily gave up on it, effectively passing the buck to Nardi. Had Cook tried to engage the goalscorer, he may well have prevented the second bite of the cherry. [Post edited 19 Oct 15:48]

New keeper. on 15:59 - Oct 19 with 56 views | Benny_the_Ball | On a side note I thought the Millwall goalkeeper, Crocombe, was pretty solid. He was called up to the first team only 24 hours earlier after first choice keeper, Steven Benda, picked up an injury in the lead up to the game. Crocombe was signed in the summer from Burton Albion on a free transfer. [Post edited 19 Oct 16:17]

Good shout, Benny. I tuned in to the stream more than an hour before the game as I love the background noise as the ground fills up while I do some laptop work. I ended up watching his extended warm-up. He was out really early, and looked very impressive in every drill. He has the full range of skills. He also talked to his coaches an awful lot. An awful lot. I was watching, wondering if that demonstrated a lack of confidence or a real confidence, but couldn't decide. As for the game, I agree he looked solid, albeit that he had very little to do. But his body language was good, and he seemed very involved with his back four.
