New keeper. on 18:07 - Oct 18 by rbee | If Nardi had kept his starting position then Azeez would have had to challenge him. |
Don’t agree. They’d both be at the point the ball hits the pitch at the same time. Nardi wouldn’t have known whether he could handle the ball or not as it was initially played forward. He’d have risked giving away a pen or taking out Azeez a yard outside the box which means he’d be sent off. He erred on the side of caution and was let down by Cook.

Agree with you not Nardi’s ball - Cook should have done better with the long ball -and the second just fell perfect for the striker following Varanes header. Madsen and Varane not the same in the second half allowing Millwall’s midfield to take over. Thought Vale was ineffective today especially his final ball and our crossing was woeful Have seen us play a lot worse and get all three points just wasn’t our day.

New keeper. on 15:56 - Oct 18 by gazza1 | I presume you are blaming Nardi for the first goal......I am not so sure about that. RND left his man, Cook did not defend very well either. As for the 2nd goal.....I think Varane got a touch on the cross and it 'killed' our defence. A bit unfortunate really but not good defending generally, RND held the goal scorer onside. |
Was directly behind the cross for the 2nd goal and our player closing the guy down got a deflection on the cross that diverted the ball behind our line of defence . It’s certainly slight, but you could really see it take out most of our back line . Unfortunate really but we should have been alive like the striker was . The first goal is touch and go whether it’s Nardi’s fault . Bloke next to me was screaming that it was Nardi’s fault . Spoke to others after and all of them to a man were perplexed that Nardi was even mentioned about it. My own opinion . If I was to be critical then Nardi needs to be more decisive. The top keepers would read that ball and just come and take the ball , the man, everything . Be indecisive for a split second then it’s too late. I don’t think the defenders involved covered themselves in glory either . Do think that the social media fans and others can’t help but look for a scapegoat and Nardi and possibly Frey I are certainly filling the Madsen sized gap in their lives . Nardi hadn’t been great , but that save in the first half is one of the best saves of the season for me. Rough with the smooth like all the players in this squad

For me the first goal is definitely Nardis fault because the bloke just won't come off his line which must be a nightmare for our defence. Question marks and indecision seems to follow Nardi.

Good post and I sometimes wonder how much it effects defenders being unsure how the keeper is going to react in different situations which can lead to confusion resulting in stupid goals given up. Did Cook or anybody rip him after the first goal because they usually let him have it which probably causes more indecision and the cycle continues . What is our goalkeeping coach doing if he is not correcting this because other teams will be ready to exploit this and probably have already to be fair

Can't say I agree with you there Connell. Cook was dawdling terribly. If Nardi had come for it, he had a lot further to travel and would have been completely out of position. Second goal was dreadful defending. Nardi made an outstanding save early on also. He has one part of his game which needs work and sure he has every right to have felt peed off when the club dropped him for a young goalkeeper who was way too raw and then the club supposedly in for Dieng, again none of this would help Nardi, in feeling wanted by the club. Not saying he doesn't have his faults, but some aspects of his game is often outstanding, in terms of keepers we seem to attract. I think Mahoney Cooper potentially adds depth on his return, Walsh possibly is on his way, and maybe Nardi stays or we get someone else in. But he is far from the worst keeper, we have had in recent seasons.

For me think the club has not handle this very well... we seem to have got ourselves another Paal situation Paal was hawked around expecting Watford to buy him... and when they never, he was expected to stay and carry on. I guess we will never know if Paal was desperate to move on, or us desperate to get rid... but for me Paal was perhaps the only player from the Beale fiasco that actually kept turning up Feel we are going down the same route with Nardi. He has a perfectly adequate 1st season with us. His form did dip towards the end, but every player has that.. So we decide to leave him out and play someone that, and let's be honest, is nowhere near as accomplished as Nardi... and now that has backfired... we want the lad back in ... afraid to say this is not good management I'm in F section at SA so nearly on that 18 yd line... and I thought he had no chance of coming to claim that ball.... and I said on the thread at HT... Mbengue may have done better than Cook... I thought Nardi did the right thing... made himself big and actually saved the 1st shot... and was really unlucky not saving the 2nd... Personally I think Nardi is our number 1 keeper... he has flaws definitely... but he is light years ahead of Walsh at this moment in time [Post edited 19 Oct 5:23]

Both RND and Cook ripped in to Nardi presumably for initially coming for the ball and then changing his mind. When the ball was hit RND and Cook were covering Azeez and Nardi was almost on the edge of the box. Looking good. The moment Nardi changed his mind about coming for the ball all three players were left in no mans land. Very poor from both Cook and RND. They both assumed Nardi was going to deal with it, which is fine, but they should not have given up marking Azeez. Ideally one should have stayed with Azeez whilst the other got behind Nardi to protect the goal. Nardi shouldn't have changed his mind and should have waited for the ball, he would have been there before Azeez. He could have headed it, chested it away, he would have been almost static so would not be giving a foul away, Azeez more likely to foul Nardi in an effort to get the ball. All three at fault. I know many will disagree with me. We all watch the same thing and yet interpret it in many ways. Fascinating really.

I think you have it right, Rbee. Nardi got pelters but he did actually save the first shot regardless and almost the second follow up too. The first save earlier on was top drawer - not many getting to that at this level. His distribution is good too. Last season, he kept us in many games. We know Nardi has limitations coming for balls - as I assume the defenders know that too. So we should probably play to the strengths and limit the weaknesses. Someone should tell him to stay on his line and the defenders should cover these situations and most of the crosses too. Didn’t see Nardi ripping into the defence or Varane for goal 2, which was their issue. I agree with another post that MadBen probably would have got there first and cleared it - or the man. Outcome was a knock on confidence and it took our momentum away which had been really good until that point. Cost us the game. [Post edited 19 Oct 7:21]

The ball over the top for the first goal was 90/10 ‘keepers ball’ but Nardi as we know doesn’t leave his 6 yard box so having a glacial defence leaves you extra exposed to anything over the top putting you in trouble. Second goal the touch off Varane takes it off Cook’s head but Nardi is glued to the spot as usual like he’s wearing lead boots. Not his fault per se and any save would go down as a fantastic one, but frustrating to see him once again making Frey look like Usain Bolt. The one a couple of minutes earlier was far worse - hopeful ball put into the box, simple grab for a Sunday league goalie, let alone a professional and he’s glued to the floor again with their striker given a free header 6 yards out that he somehow misses…

It is a very 'tight' call Norf, defensively the goal was proper poor one to concede. To blame Nardi without looking at the defenders is very wrong. RND let the attacker/scorer run off him and not a word!!!

From the lack of defending by Cook and the reaction after I’m thinking Nardi has made an ill-judged call for it then changed his mind. I want my centre-back taking charge and just heading the thing away. Plenty of blame to share around starting from Mitchell having three business days to get his head up and play it over the top.

Yeh it's a defensive calamity of a goal. Midfielder allowed to pick a pass without challenge, RND got a bit lazy and square and let a guy run, Cook's lack of pace found out, and yeh perhaps Nardi should be more advanced but I don't think he can come and catch the ball where it landed, so are we saying the goalkeeper should come and challenge the Millwall lad for a header? I thought it was one of several examples yesterday where we missed mad Mbengue's recovery pace in behind.
