Hi all. I'm shortly going to be moving here - never thought I'd end up Sarf, but life leads you into funny directions sometimes.

Any Rs around? Any tips welcome - pubs (esp any with pool, and any showing Championship?), places to hang out, anything else of interest. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, i live in Carshalton.

I don't venture into Sutton very often, so i can't help you much there, but Carshalton Village / Ponds has quite a few pubs with Sky.

The GreyHound and The Sun are great Sunday lunch type gastro pubs, and The Hope wins CAMRA real ale pub of the year awards on the regular so they're all worth a visit...

Can we not knock it?

I used to live in Carshalton near the ponds. It was a nice place with a good few pubs but that was back in the late 1980s. My car insurance dropped quite a bit from living in London!

Yeah, went to the Hope when I viewed the flat, looks a great, old-fashioned boozer.

I live in the area. Pubs as others have mentioned. Not sure about pool tables - the Mrs who's a native didn't know what bar billards is! Purley way retail via the Beddington Asda shortcut is only 15 mins away has pool tables, bowling and tv - not sure about championship.

Carshalton has ecology centre by ponds and Honeywood museum - community events / cream teas if that's your thing.

Charles Cryer theatre in high street has a nice restuarant and plays, tribute acts, jazz & community events etc.

Oaks park with cafe and also public golf course and lots of garden centres 5 minutes up the road.

If you're up towards the circle / st helier it can get a bit lively but not too bad.

Wallington up the road has a farmers' market one a month with jazz bands playing etc

Sutton high street has new community hub / shared working space building and a independent / arthouse cinema that has comedy nights etc

As mentioned The Hope is a great community owned pub in Carshalton. I’ve not been in years but lots of people I know rave about it and it wins all the local CAMRA awards and is often featured in the London Drinker. The Wandle River is good for walks as well as Beddington Park not far away.

I don’t remember thinking that much of the pubs in Sutton/Cheam but I’ve not tried all of them and there is a Wetherspoon. Nonsuch Park does actually exist and is very nice! Sutton Utd are the local football team and meant to be a nice club although languishing at the bottom of the National League atm.

Most of the surrounding area is sleepy suburbia or semi-green belt with lots of golf clubs and cricket clubs. My cricket team play quite a lot around there and our regular fixture v Banstead CC Sunday 3rds is probably our favourite.

Didn't Norf have to move south and survived to the tell the tale 😊. Carshalton locals get funny about calling it south london - north surrey don't you know. No tube or trams (yet) so may be they're right, lol.

I moved to Carshalton a year ago. Glad to know that there are some other Rs around in what seems a heavily Palace/C****-supported area.

There's a clue in the name - the London Borough of Sutton.

No idea why you'd want to identify as a provincial rather than a Londoner!

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

If there's no QPR game on a Saturday, you can go and watch Carshalton Athletic at Colston Avenue. Nice little ground with covered stand and terrace. Bar and clubhouse for a drink before/after/during the game. My son plays for the under 7s. It's a nice little club.

I was talking about the older locals, who still hanker for being in Surrey before the boundary changes in the 60s. I must admit it was easier to get into central london when I lived in Sevenoaks so I have some sympathy.

Grew up around there and till a couple of years ago was there many times a year. Lots of scum and Palace fans indeed.

Second the comments on Carshalton pubs, Hope in particular has always been a good one, Sun also good. In Sutton, the Sudstone and Shinner was about as good as it gets when I was around a lot just after Covid. Old Bank has always shown most footy games historically (have watched many QPR games there over the years, albeit without fellow fans).

If you have a car may be worth considering country pubs on weekends... Woodman in Banstead, Sportsman at Mogador, Box Hill pubs... anywhere between 10 and 30 mins drive away.

Wonder how many of them are conscientious objectors to the 60+ oyster card!

I used to live in Carshalton Beeches and moved out in 2012.
I visit Sutton on a rare occasion once a year maybe as I still have some mates living there. It shocked me to be honest how much its changed in just over a decade and not for the better IMO.

It used to be great in the 90s and early 2000s. Most the good bars and pubs are long gone now though. The Sutton Arms at the bottom of the high street used to be the last bastion where we'd still meet up. Watched England v France there in the world cup in 2022. It had turned into a poncy Green King a few years ago, got expensive and now its closed permanently.

Pretty sure Carshalton has gone the same way, the village part by the two ponds used to be lively and lots of pubs. One by one they've shut down.

I won my first football trophy at Carshalton’s ground when my team from the Morden and district league won the Hickey cup in final 1994.Unfortunately I had to go straight to work afterwards so I couldn’t take advantage of the facilities in the bar.

Postcodes are all Surrey, though - it's all SM-something or other, not London SW.

(Also, no tube, so by definition Not Proper London in my biased opinion - at least that was the line I took when I was doing missionary work among the benighted heathens of Mitcham, all too many of them North Battersea fans. The Palace fans were mainly human, though.)

There's the Spotlight bar under the Charles Cryer theatre in Carshalton High St, does Wimbledon lager and other beers different from the norm in the other boozers.around.
And the Dukes Head just up the road at Wallington Green, ok but a bit pricey.

I think it's sometimes a cricket supporter thing. You want to be part of Middlesex/Surrey/Kent rather than london
