Celar / Madsen - Sliding Doors 10:13 - Oct 23 with 3690 viewsWestbourneR

After watching Madsen run the game last night with both grit and real class, I'm struggling to think of an Rs player who has gone from such a low point to become our best player.

For me Madsen now looks like a Premiership footballer. He is class. Indispensable.

So it got me to thinking about Celar - who we bombed out after an equally poor season. Did we move too soon? Was there a good player in there?

My feeling is strongly - no.

I actually think Celar has no interest in the putting in the hard yards to make it in England. He looked extremely unhappy and withdrawn from the start.

However I think the key difference is Celar truly was a poor player with one attribute, he could strike a ball and finish. In the gentle Swiss League, once every two games, the ball would bobble his way and he'd smash it in. He has nothing else.

Whereas Madsen is showing he is complete midfielder (not that defensive part was at all obvious 10 games ago)

Poll: Should JFH get the sack?

Celar has done nothing on loan at Düsseldorf and is now a bench warmer, so no, he would not be better than Frey.

As for Madsen. he showed last season that he had a talent for passing, but has upped his game and now gets tackles and blocks more frequently in games.

Hopefully he will continue to improve and make it into the Premiership.

With us yeah.

He scored three pretty decent goals in one game preseason for them and he didn’t do badly at Lugano prior to that. I know it was only two goals for us but he took those well too. Could he have done better - probably, but that injury was terrible timing.

Whether or not he would have improved with us this year, supported by better players and a different system - as Madsen has - we won’t know. But if he doesn’t get enough games for Dusseldorf, I guess they’ll probably send him back.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Really impressed how Madsen has improved his game, he said in pre-season interview that he had struggled in his first season and would work harder to improve and look at how well he is doing now. Celar was unfortunately a dud, looked it from the start and never looked comfortable in the team.

Played deeper as a 6, JS has worked out that's the only position for him. He cannot be a 10 as he cannot back quick enough, whens hes a 6 and we build it up the pitch he can then contribute.

Also, as we have faster players like Burrell, he can hit a pass through from deeper positions (as he has always had the passing skill).

Those two, with the extra effort put into running around, have been the difference.

Can he sustain and also improve upon it? Or will he, like Varane, regress as the Champ chews him up?

zzzzzzzzzz

Celar is a strange one in that he did virtually nothing for us, but those two goals against Cardiff stopped a horrific run of games for us and we started to pick up some points after that. So I will always, at least, give him some credit.

That he did and looked a different player, doing so.

Plus we still (probably) have a contract (unknown) and probably paid good money (unknown) for him. I also doubt (unproven) Fortuna Nicoise are paying all his wages either.

Made more sense for me to retain him - or at least get guaranteed game time for him elsewhere, compared to retaining and extending Frey - twice.

Much like most strikers, I think Celar probably would have benefitted from a 442, especially with Burrell and perhaps therefore a better option now Kolli is out in the wilderness again, seemingly. Feels like Rayan is in the players version of the garden.

Maybe because it took us a while to change formations, we made the Celar decision a tad early in retrospect.
