I really rate Varane, but Field wouldn't have done a worse job these past couple of weeks in that role. Reckon we take the heat off Varane a bit and give Field and Hayden some midfield minutes alongside the Odense Pirlo
Edit, that is also to say I'd rather we played Esquerdinha at LB when RND isn't available. In fact, I'd rather we played him full stop. Development club and all that [Post edited 25 Oct 19:13]

JS has talked quite openly about wanting to keep players involved so their morale doesn't drop so, yeah, I think that's most of it. Though that doesn't make the same amount of sense for Esquerdina who must be well pissed off.
Agree it would make more sense to get Sam on in his normal position a bit more often, or at CB when that makes sense, and if RND isn't fit they should stick to the model and play Esquerdina. |  | | |

I'd rather see Field at LCB and Mbengue at Right Back tbh Esquedinha is an attacking full back who can cross and could have done with him today. Mbengue was a total liability at CB today his pace gets him out of trouble like the personality and impact but I think Field is actually a better centre back and its not even his main position |  | | |

The left-back situation is increasingly odd.
We've frequently gone into games with only one left-back among the twenty-player matchday squad. That's unusual, to say the least. well...turns out the reason may be that Field is seen as a live contender for the spot.
In a team with two holding midfielders I would have thought that attacking full-backs were a must. We're going the other way.
We're now sometimes doing this:

Just think what this team could be with two proper attacking full backs as opposed to the predominately defensive Dunne and RND. Esquerdinha particularly frustrating as he's shown enough to deserve a run in the first team, but gets overshadowed.
For all the positives on youth recruitment, Morgan, Kolli, Bennie, Esquerdinha not getting any minutes in the first team - not quite right at the moment is it? |  |

Kolli and Bennie from memory haven’t been great against very physical, low block kind of teams; they just get pushed around. I’m not sure if Esquerdinha isn’t available for some reason as he hasn’t featured at all after some promising performances. Morgan might have been a good replacement yesterday(not at LB obviously) as we definitely needed someone with some energy who would show for the ball.
I think Stephan is still learning about the Championship and he makes some mistakes that we know are mistakes because we know the players better and how some matches like this are likely to go. I think it’s going too far to say it reflects badly on our youth policy. We’re still a very young team and I can see why he wants some balance between youth and experience. TBH I don’t think it was generally our older players that had poor performances, apart from the Nardi error. |  | | |
