Worst places you have visited for an AWAY day fixture !! 14:09 - Oct 29 with 1567 viewsnumptydumpty

After visiting the not so delightful "SWANSEA" wondered about other hotels, pubs, towns that were just downright derelict and awful to visit... Don't get to too many away games these days, but crikey Swansea town and pubs had about as much appeal as climbing Kilimanjaro stark b*ll**k naked...

A place to visit for culture, class and style, it truly was not !!!

Appreciate the weather being dark, dank, windy, wet and not so mild didn't exactly add to the mix well, but crikey was pleased it is not my own personal abode...Working for the Swansea tourist board could well be a challenge, no doubt !!!

Any other delights and stories anyone has to offer of altermative similar waste zones, people have had the misfortune to frequent for an away day special ??

Sure there will be many contenders...

Bristol Rovers early 80's. The place was a dump.

We were all sitting half way up in one of the stands and half of the Rovers fans in front of us had their backs to the game so that they could abuse and threaten us.

One guy kept picking up a broken door and slamming it in to the ground making everybody jump.

Yes, Bristol Rovers was the first place that sprang to mind for me. I saw us play there in 1979. Vince Taylor has some pictures from 1980 on Twitter. Like something from another age, even in those days. (Click to enlarge the photos).

Blackburn's the worst one on our current slate IMO.
A place where your acceptable pub options basically begin and end with a Wetherspoons.

But that's better than Oxford's bowling alley.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end

Yeh but you just drink in Oxford, nice big Fullers pub by the river, and cab it out there late on. Blackburn doesn't come with that option. Get in a cab if you like but you'll only be in Burnley, Preston or Bolton.

Regarda Bristol the town itself now is decent. went there for a stag do weekend. Was lively and been to a couple of our many away day wins at Bristol City, so for me now is not an avoid at all costs place today..

Appreciate in years gone by, was a different prospect..

Swansea is far from the best but nowhere near the worst. Wolverhampton is the one for me (although we did win both times I’ve been). Crap away pub and a dingy town centre with a horrible ring road.

When we were in the 3rd tier, trips to the old Chesterfield & Colchester grounds were pretty grim. If I recall at Chesterfield the toilets did not have a roof and to enter the loos you had to step over a gully that carried the piss out.

In both the visits to these places the locals were not that pleased to see us either.

Oh God yeh, Port Vale, fck me.

We went in a pub there that had a sign on the door saying 'those barred under previous management remain barred' and another that said 'please do not spit on the pool table'.

The old Saltergate and Millmoor (Rotherham) were pretty grim. Of current fixtures, Stoke is awful because the ground us in the middle of nowhere . Plus their fans are always hospitable!!!!

Hull, 2010/11. Couldn't believe how apocalyptic it was when I got off the train!

After getting over the shock of that, we had the pleasure of watching an uneventful 0-0 draw + Taarabt to throw his toys out of the pram early doors, looking and gesturing at the bench to be subbed off...

Arguably that ground is still pretty much a wasteland…now a HUGE IKEA…not the greatest part of Bristol by some margin.

Also building on Bexley’s response, Swindon away end used to have similar unroofed toilets. Also went to Newport for a pre season several years ago and that was (ground and town) very, visceral, shall we say.

God Portsmouth.

That FA Cup we got booted off the train, and then told to go into a backroom of a pub that was full of Pompey fans. I tried to say thank you to the landlady for letting us drink there on the way out and said "The cops made me. If I had my way, I'd have you all hung". It didn't seem like she was joking

Wimbledon's Plough Lane was a bad ground originally but more down to it being a non league one that hadn't yet been upgraded.

Gillingham's away end was shocking when it was a terrace and even worse now it is a temporary stand. The town centre is f*cked and the majority of the populace are scumbags. Apologies to any Medway Rs on here who reside in the area, I of course exclude you from my sweeping generalisation statement above.

The whole of Lootown should be flattened.

Probably the coldest place I have ever attended an away game, along with the Britannia where the wind blows in all directions

Carlisle for me. Open terrace, we faced away from the pitch due to driving sleet and only turning around when rising crowd noise indicated something may be happening. That was my only visit as we were traumatised by the experience 😂

The grass is always greener.

Grimsby Town pretty bad- watching trawlers sinking out at sea from the Findus Stand. Luton - needless to expand too much as the whole experience from leaving the train to making an escape is and was horrible. Port Vale, although found a definite Camra "Interior of historic value" with decent beer but pinnacle of awfulness goes to Cambridge United -manyone brave enough to survive the stench of the bogs deserves their PhD. Gillingham is pretty bad - Home Fans' boozer - The Livingstone is genuinely a relic of a much darker age and even the Gurkhas, when they were in The Black Lion Barracks, avoided going anywhere in Gillingham unless in a pack.

The first time we went to Chesterfield was just one huge pain in the arse for all sorts of reasons. We won but I never went back.

Top for me is Stoke on Trent. Went plenty of times to City and Vale. I’ve even had to stay up there a couple of times and go out on the Town there, sweet baby jaysus! I’ll never go back, if I can help it. League of Gentleman must have based everything they did on that place.

No not pompey.!! Great place...

Studied and lived down there

Was a great place to live as a student. Often saw Pompey players on a night out !!

The ground and fans appreciate a very tribal atmosphere. Went to a Pompey Saints reserve fixture. Think the few Saints fans there that day, might have felt very unwelcome though

its always frickin windy there though. Do agree with that ..

Another one for me.

The town that fun forgot - High Wycombe.

Had to be high to get any appreciation in this God Forsaken Land.. Even appreciating its Sir Gareths home from home...

And Norwich because of traffic jams galore due to the farm land otherwise known as Thetford !!!!

Maine Road was up there. The walk through back alleys in Moss Side with various nefarious characters hovering/threatening, and enough dog sht to power the nation's lights for a year was quite something to behold.

Yeah, agree. I’ve almost done 50 league grounds by my last count, and Blackburn is the worst place. Utterly grim. Swansea is a laugh with Wine Street. Most places have the odd good pub. Blackburn is awful.
