Used to work for a well know dental trade association / union

Price is about right for UK, its not a straightforward procedure and takes months, they first have to drill and set into your jaw the fitting, the bone then heals around it and once set then you screw in the implant.

You can travel abroad but you wont know what you will get so it is a risk, you can have an initial consultation in London with some of these firms, but you need to allow for flights hotels on your costs as well

Depending on which tooth it is there are alternatives such as a bridge.

You cannot get implants on the NHS the best you will get is a false tooth, sometimes you can get a crown or bridge but it is a bit of a dodgy area

Watch out for Groupons dental implant deals come out every so often

Share your pain as had one of these a year or so ago - cost $3k NZ though which is half the amount you've been quoted - lot of Aussies/Kiwi's doing the medical holiday route but ours is mainly to Thailand....all good if nothing goes wrong...

As a couple of people on here are in the know about dentistry...

The thing I don't understand is how the UK dental healthcare system has become transformed into an expensive and fragmented system, with a lot of people having problems accessing an NHS dentist, without anyone really saying anything.

Because it was essentially privatised by the back door. The government offered dentists a deal that many of them couldn't accept, and surprise suprise, many of them didn't. A similar trick is now being applied to the rest of the NHS.

Listerine is the mutt's nuts.

Apart from when a filling falls out I have no trouble now, along with arm and hammer 'extra white' which if you smoke does make a visible difference.

Going for a filling at lunch actually and a quick clean £49 Happy days. In fact ever since I made my mouth less crowded I have had hardly any work done.

It was always private, i.e private contractors undertaking a public health role for a fee (sound familiar, GP commissioning anyone) unlike the Doctors

It used to be the case that Dentists would get a fixed fee for anything they did i.e x£ for a filling x£ for a crown. Throughout the 90's what they were paid was held down, whilst newer better private techniques became available so more of them moved to a mixed practice of NHS work and additional private services. Some when private only hence why the shortage started.

In 2005 the NHS system changed to a price band / time based one where the patient paid one of three bands and the dentist earned points for a year (this was supposed to allow the PCTs etc to plan and fix costs) and the dentists bid for a contract of £X for Ypts per annum. The effect this had was twofold. Firstly you got a corporatisation of the industry so you had companies like IDH using economies of scale to underbid your local dentist. A lot of dentists went down the private insurance route with things like denplan. Some who remained learnt to work the system hence you would only get one filling in an appointment (classed as one treatment worth 3 pts - 3 fillings in the same treatment would still be 3pts so 3 seperate appointments / treatments would be 9pts)

You then had issues where dentists either used up all their points (no more NHS appointments until the next financial year) or did not use enough of them (large fines)

More and more abandoned the NHS until the recession hit and the private sector took a whack.

So the main lessons from all this are:

Whichever way you cut it private contractors deliving public health services do not act in the interest of the patient and we will see this with the disaster that will unfold over the coming years with GPs who have been turned into businessman. The fully private sector is the biggest winner (as it was under the tories last time) because NHS services will deteriorate or not keep up to date, where as private will grow as the wealthier will be more prepared to pay ever larger insurance / fees for more advanced treatments

Got an abscess on my front tooth cap. Going to my NHS dentist tomorrow. I think I'm in for a few months of dental work. Joy.

I made false teeth for John Major and that's a fact.

Floss every day and stay away from the Listerine - it's what Cheggers used to drink in the morning. Alcohol free mouthwash is the answer.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

HI BlackCroweI had my two front teeth extracted and replaced with implants and a bridge/crown thing for about that price three years ago. I had first damaged them falling off a chopper bike when I was about 12 and they had been an ongoing issue for forty+ years.

Used a groupon 2 for 1 deal at the dental implant centre aka dentists abroad. I had to make several visits to Harley Street and the price also included follow up check ups and xrays for two years.

They are basically a team of Hungarian dentists and support staff who move/commute here to work. They have excellent standards and all the latest equipment.

I was and continue to be happy with the results although it was a long and sometimes fairly painful experience. Basically, the extractions and time for healing in between. They will try and sell you extra cosmetic services like porcelain caps etc and offer to repair every cosmetic fault in your teeth. I discussed all with my own dentist and made a decision to pass on all unnecessary expense.

The alternative for me was a local specialist at about double the price or false teeth. So if you can have it done if it is front teeth. If it is a back tooth then I wouldn't bother. If I had used someone abroad then I would have had to travel many times but I guess my treatment may have been more complicated than others.

If you need any further info the feel free to PM me if you know how?

I know a couple people who have had dental work done in poland and spoken very highly of it. Some things, id be wary of doing abroad and have heard a lot of horror stories around plastic surgery but only heard good things about dentistry.

Bit of a ball ache though if it goes wrong and needs fixing under guarantee.
£3000 is a heart breaker though so time to weigh up alternative options.

I'm paying £18 a month at the moment for a dental plan. Been on it over 10 years now as I wanted to make sure I looked after my set having had 11 years of orthodontist work as a child due to hypodontia.
