It’s the type of job that might have suited him better straight after he stopped playing quite honestly but he wasn’t going to turn down Jenkins and the chance at Swansea. And his overall record at Swansea was very good in terms of the win ratio of around 37% in the Premier league and our best season whilst in that league of 8th. |  |

Monk lost a monster in Bony and got a limp Eder and an unfit Frenchman Franck T in return. He did have Gomis in reserve. Monk bit his lip but let it be known he had "raised eyebrows" about the quality of Bony's replacement. He managed to jkee Swansea in the frame before Guidolin took over.
From memory a young Mitrovic was available but at a fruity £12m fee. Llorente came in a year later with Guidolin for a snip of £5m. Ledbetter had to do better than that. |  |

Yep. To about midway through his first full season when his changes started to take effect. That he got the job permanently in the first place after the run of form he oversaw as a caretaker was bad enough.
Jenkins appointed him as he expected GM to be easier to handle than Laudrup, what with him being Huw's snitch inside the camp for many years by that point. Unfortunately for Huwbert once Monk got the top job the ego took over and they had a worse relationship than the one he had with Sousa. | |

The double over Manchester United and Arsenal meant that we were and still are one of only a few clubs to have done that in the same season. Prior to Monk coming in, we were on a poor run under Laudrup. The results picked up immediately.

Tony Pulis and Sam Allardyce both achieved high PL placings with their teams playing the same kind of industrial football that Monk introduced here and it was just as sustainable in the long run.
Appointing him was one of the single worst decisions of Jenkins' later reign, and that's saying something. | |

The guy was shoe-in'd into the Swansea job and had a good early track record because he was nothing more than a sneaky teachers pet who ended up gaining utterly false credibility, by means of walking straight into a room stuffed full of the family silver., that wasn't his.
He hardly started off from scratch from an extremely disadvantageous position having to deal with an utterly cr@p squad that was in situ from the very start. | |

If Monk hadn't revealed himself to be the type of person he is by sh*t stirring behind Sousa's back and then doing the exact same thing to Laudrup (mostly because neither of them much rated him as a player) then perhaps people would have more sympathy for him.
Unfortunately he whizzed on what could have been a seriously good legacy with his actions and can have no complaints about his current standing with the support. [Post edited 5 Mar 11:00]

Not really, he could have been remembered as a great here. But IMO he spoilt it by bitching to HJ and dismantling the attractive team he inherited (that got us to 8th). We were in a far worse place when he was sacked to when he got the managers job. | |
